Bursting out the massive black prison doors, gazing upon the lucid crystal blue sky where marshmallow clouds waltzed by the bright sun that was scorching down, while a cool gentle breeze caused the hairs on my arm to rise, I rushed to the mini white bus where I heard my teammates chattering about their day at school. With butterflies fluttering in my stomach, my palms feeling clammy and an uncontrollable tremor emerging, I could not conceal my nerves. When we arrived to Buffalo Grove High School, the smell of crisp tennis balls--brought me joy--the feel of the brisk breeze descending down my back--caused the heat from my body to diminish--the sound of football players getting yelled at --reminded me that we needed to win-- got me relaxed and ready for this match. 1-6. …show more content…
Nothing was going well: the cool breeze caused us to “spray the ball” over the fence, the obnoxious football players frightened me with their persistent cry for help, the tennis balls’ freshness and pristine presence quickly vanished. As I glanced over, I saw a slender body, with speckles of gray bellowing at us, slowly trotting over with a blank expression. I was thinking, “Aw man, he’s gonna come over here and yell at us or tell us the same old “give me 110%” or “stay focused.’” A Northwestern graduate (wise beyond his years) , a basketball and tennis player (athletically gifted) , our coach’s words enchanted us with delight and captivated our attention. With a grin on his pale pink face and a sparkle in his glimmering eyes, he let out an optimistic sigh while saying, “You guys just gotta battle. I don’t care about the score anymore. Just gotta love the battle no matter what
My very first Varsity high school football game was the best experience of my life. It was the first week of school and I had practice every day. The practices were heavy we practiced for four hours every day after school. Everyone on the team felt we were being overworked but, that was just the beginning of our season. Our first game was a Friday night all that time practicing made us ready for that night. Two hours before the game we had loud music playing and we were all yelling to get ready for the game. I remember getting on the field and hearing all the fans screaming. Now it was time for kickoff I lined up on the 50-yard line then the whistle was blown, and I sprinted to go tackle the ball carrier. I made lots of hits but also took some
Friday nights during the fall season are what every high school football player looks forward to. After a long week of being yelled at, running hills, and practicing, all any high school football player wants to do is run out of the tunnel with the crowd screaming your name and gear up for a football game. However, I was not a Varsity player during the 2017-17 season. I played only Junior Varsity which was nowhere near the same as Varsity football. I played on Monday nights and only about thirty people would take the time to show up to a Junior Varsity game. Although, one Friday night would change my football career and change my life.
Competition is a unique situation in life to analyze. If you can focus on the small details outside of the game, there’s a possibility that you can understand the way an athlete is performing and why a coach is behaving a certain way. In the heat of the moment, if not properly trained, one can not perform to their potential due to the pressure that the moment of competition can place on an individual. This can be just as much for coaches and how they react and act as much as it goes for player. Effective coaches know how to use the situation to their advantage and know what to do or how to react at the appropriate time. In this paper, I’ll examine the competition of the University of Wisconsin – Oshkosh Titans and the St. Thomas Tommies in a NCAA Division 3 playoff game. I’m watching this game from the UW-Oshkosh side, so I will be observing the UW-Oshkosh football team for the most part. With this competition between UW-Oshkosh and St. Thomas, I’ll break down this paper into four talking points and the effects of said points. These four points are pre-competition routine, feedback and reinforcement by coach, game flow and interruptions and then other thoughts and factors that I noticed during the game.
Summer, a season where many are free to do whatever they please and not have a worry in the world. This is not the case, however, for a high school football player such as myself; for classes being released marks the start of another season, not summer, but football season. It was a hot day on Mount Diablo High’s football field; I could already feel sweat dripping down as I stood there in my armor. Players were separated between two categories: Skills players and the Linemen. The coaches came and said we had to do hitting drills to start of practice. So the linemen, Erik, D’antae, Xavier, Charlie, Jarreck, Anthony, Josh, and I, created a circle and waited to see who the coaches would call out first. To my surprise, there was someone in the
The South Dakota High School Football Championship was an experience that I am grateful for having. During the process of getting ready for the event, I was more worried about my grade of the course compared to the success of the weekend. As each week passed on, I realized that this weekend is bigger than just a grade for a course, but it’s a dream that many children have had since they first touched a football. After I realized how selfish I was, I volunteered to lead the game script group that was part of the social media/marketing group. The reason behind that was because I believe I want to go into the marketing aspect of sports, and I thought it was easy. Now that the event is done, I still want to be in sport marketing, but I learned
Belleville West High School have a lot of talented students. Football people the way of life for most of the belleville west high school students. Football is the most commonly talked about sport at belleville west high school.
I was getting of the bus at Pike High School to start my high school soccer career. I remember being extremely excited and happy to finally get the season started. The team stepped off the bus and formed two lines to walk to the fields to warm up. I began my warm up feeling fresh. I got plenty of sleep the night before and I was not too nervous.
Additionally, the games were segregated with the white reserved section having the best seats in the stadium. The tradition eventually ended in the mid-1960s when the schools became a part of the University Interscholastic League (UIL), which meant that the season ended before Thanksgiving. The rivalry was never the same after the end of this beloved tradition; however, in recent years there have been attempts to reignite the passion within the rivalry with the help of Nike, the athletic brand, who recently released a video on Twitter that showcased the Yates and Wheatley High School football teams and how impactful football is on both schools in their recovery from Hurricane Harvey. Although the rivalry is not as potent as it once
I remember when I was little thinking how awesome it would be to play football and I looked up to the people older than me like in middle school or high school when I was in elementary thinking that someday I would be in that same situation.
In the movie coach carter in the yearin 1999, “Coach Ken Carter returns to his old high school in Richmond, California, to get the basketball team into shape. With tough rules and academic discipline, he succeeds in setting the players on a winning streak. But when their grades start to suffer, Carter locks them out of the gym and shuts down their championship season. When he is criticized by the players and their parents, he sticks to his guns, determined that they excel in class as well as on the court.” At the end of the season, the coach says “l came to coach basketball players, and you became students. L came to teach boys, and you became men.” This team restored the meaning in the term ‘student-athlete’. So you’ve kicked a ball into a net, or hit a ball several hundred yards with a piece of wood, or threw a ball in a hoop…that isn’t that important if you aren’t the best type of person off the court. The biggest problem, in sports in geral, is that there is too much focus at score on the end of the game, and forgetting the importance of the effort used to score every single point on that board. There is great value in sacrificing yourself for something bigger than yourself, and unfortunately, sports have drifted from this meaning. A teams success is determined by the score at the
Before every football game, I get my football pants on and I gather all of my gear. I get my helmet and pads and I put them together somewhere. I then grab my jersey and put it over my shoulder pads.
On October 25th a message was sent to the Varsity Football Team regarding the necessity to retake their team photos and it was scheduled for October 30th. My sons asked if I could attend so I could take some extra pictures for them, especially since this was Alexander's last year with the high school. I was both crestfallen and enraged yesterday when only thirteen players, including my two, and one manager who showed up for the picture. None of the coaches were present for the picture either! I have enclosed both a copy of the picture as well as the initial request for pictures at the bottom of this email for your review.
All year, I had thought about hearing these words, walking down the halls, being high-fived. All year, I had imagined the title. “Varsity tennis player.” That day, though, walking down that hall, I wasn’t being congratulated. I wasn’t being high-fived, called out, or clapped for. We were being clapped for. I realized that it wasn’t about walking down the hall, it was being a part of the Northern Tennis Team that was special. Surrounding me were the men, the brothers, the family that was our tennis team. These were the same men that played through years of tennis camps with me, had lost blood, sweat and tears on these same courts, and had taught each other
The fire surges through my body, I feel so powerful, so unstoppable. The sweat drips down my face but I hardly notice. The vibration of my racquet makes the fire burn hotter. It’s the most intense game I’ve ever played. We trade points out constantly, but I know I’m better than him, I know that I can win. The simple mistakes I’m making can only be forgiven by one thing. Handing this kid a loss. It’s been deuce forever, I can’t seem to take two in a row. I know I’m better than him, but I just can’t win. Tennis is the only thing I have to keep my mind off of things. I can’t lose it.
Winning is every coach or player's main goal in any sport or in life. Although winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing. Coaches spend countless hours preparing for a big game and this builds up the fear of a loss. No one wants to lose after you dedicate hours upon hours on the court and in the books scouting and preparing for a game. Therefore, winning becomes the only option for you and your team. Throughout this persuasive essay, dedication, toughness, and ** will explain why “winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.”
