Brian Robeson: The Horrible Plane Crash

In the book Hatchet when Brian first get fire is when he is asleep and a porcupine comes and Brian throws the hatchet at the porcupine. The thing was Brian missed and sent the hatchet flying at the wall. Then the porcupine sent quills at Brian into his leg. The next morning  Brian looked at the wall and saw sparks marks and then he thought if he hit the wall with the hatchet than he could start fire.  In  Survival by the Numbers Peter said,”What are  priorities – fire first or shelter?”  Peter said that you have to have fire. Brian had to use fire a lot in the book.

The media affects Brian's perception of what a plane crash is like because it makes him feel more confident, but then loses it. In paragraph 1, it says, "Brian had seen searches on the news, seen movies about lost planes. When a plane went down they mounted extensive searches and almost always found the plane within a day or two." This assures Brian of rescue. More reassurance comes later in the paragraph. "The searchers would get government planes and cover both sides of the flight plan filed by the pilot and search until they found him. This ends when, in paragraph 8, the text says, "What do they do in the movies when they got stranded like this? Oh, yes, the hero usually found some kind of plant that he knew was good to eat and that took

You are the best thing you have,” (pg. 51) Brian learns to rely on himself as his greatest tool, which helps him persevere when he has nothing but himself. One of the first major breakthroughs for Brian was when he successfully built a first fire after many hours of trial and error. After he discovered the hatchet could create sparks for a fire, he put all his effort into finding the right material that would produce a flaming fire. Brian didn’t give up, even after he tried countless materials and tactics to make a fire burn.

Flight is a novel by Sherman Alexie that tell the story of a distressed Native American teenage boy, who has sadly stretched his breaking point after years of ill-treatment at the hands of adults, named Michael but prefers to be called Zits, “Call me Zits. Everybody calls me Zits. That is not my real name, of course. My real name is not important.” (Zits, p.1). Zits was left to his own devices at the age of six when his mother died of breast cancer and his father did not stick around much after he was born and left him. “I get into arguments and fistfights with everybody. I get so angry that I go blind and deaf and mute” (Zits, p.8)Zits is a violent person and takes out his anger on anyone because he has been in and out of the foster care system, none of which felt like family, with foster parents who only cared about the government cheque. He feels left out from the rest of the society mostly because of his half-Indian heritage and his abuse. Because of this, he is easily persuaded into committing crimes.

Later on in the story Brian and Jeanette are out on an adventure by themselves when they come across a small shed-like building. They go inside and discover chemicals which they of course immediately start to play with, one mixture they created made a violent reaction and flames erupted out of the beaker. (Insert Quote) In the late of the story it was a very cold morning in the house and Lori could not get a fire to start, being desperate for warmth she resorted to use kerosene to start the fire. Rex had told her to do this before but was not present when she used it. Lori put too much on the fire and when she lit it the fire stimulant exploded in her face and singed her eyebrows. If the children had the protection of their parents from fire their lives would have been safer and more secure.

It is like a tag on a shirt that keeps bothering your tender skin, it is the reason why you rip the tag off and make your own choices while walking into the unknown land of the wilderness, striving for the adventure that has dire consequences if executed improperly. Walking the unknown land of Hades abyss might have taken the sensitive life of one man, but it was done in a blaze of glory with no regrets. This man of course is Christopher McCandless in the book, Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer, which is based on a true story. In the book, McCandless strives for the cold Alaskan journey into the wild to satisfy his final thirst for the wilderness but tragedy strikes and it ends by him losing the most valuable thing to him, his life. He then tries repeatedly to create fire. He eventually does succeed in making fire. He later finds turtle eggs and hesitantly eats them. The first reason why I believe I would not be able to survive out in the wilderness like Brian is because I can become easily frustrated and lose my patience. When Brian set out to make fire, it took time and dedication; it did not come easy. On page 82 the text states, “Brian found it was a long way from sparks to fire .” However,despite this and his initial struggles, Brian did not give up, and eventually, he was able to make fire. Fire is an essential tool for one’s survival. Fire can provide you with food, warmth, and protection, but because of my lack of patience, I do not believe I would able to produce that first spark fast enough in order to keep up the effort. Since 1922, more than two hundred seventy- five people have died attempting trying to get to the peak of Mount Everest and, interestingly enough, a record twenty-two people died in 2015 according to the website, The Daily Mail. 2015 was also a year that no one had made it to the summit which has not happened since 1975. According to BBC news more people have been dieing close to the summit.The past few years it sims that mount Everest has been more treacherous to climb.More climbers are dieing than making it to the summit this past few years. Mount climbers have been climbing mountains since the beginning of time, but, unfortunately, there have been many tragic accidents in the past few years because many people have unrealistic expectations about how difficult and dangerous mountain climbing truly is .

Brian is certain the plane will never come so has to make tools, more fire, and better shelter. Brian also, has to learn how to catch fish and fool birds with his weapons. Brian makes lots of mistakes and learns from them and that's how he stays alive.

When Brian is making a fire, his character trait is being persistence. In the chapter, Brian was using his hatchet to form a fire. While creating a fire, Brian had a hard time getting fire, until he figured out what was the problem. When he made changes to his fire machine, the fire began spreading to his wood.
