Self driving vehicles is a huge change in our society. We are taking the next step into the future and creating something bigger than ever. Driverless cars can be a good thing and a bad thing in todays society. We depend on so many things now, the older we get and the more time goes on, the lazier we get. Being Americans, we are putting our thoughts and ideas to the ultimate test to create something so dangerous but so efficient. We have thought of ideas that would make our lives "easier" and less stressful. In this paper I will describe how driverless cars work, the current problems and setbacks that we are having, and how this new technology is being put to use today.

Self-driving cars are no longer a thought of the future. Companies like Tesla, Mercedes, and BMW have already released, or are soon to release them. Driverless cars were first created in the 1980’s but they didn't use them in real traffic situations until 2013. But recently the driver of a tesla model S electric sedan was killed in an accident while the car was in self driving mode( Jamie L ). Driverless cars may be a neat invention to make driving easier but there are various flaws like hackers, that need to be addressed.

Self-driving vehicles could take over the truck transportation field, taxi drivers, bus drivers, and even possibly the mail service in the future. These people could lose their jobs to technology, although, many people still believe that self-driving vehicles are a wonderful work of technology.

Driverless vehicles are coming, whether some of us, such as taxi drivers, want them to or not. The image of large fleets of these types of vehicles of different sizes that pick people up and take them where they need to go is probably the stuff of nightmares for people who currently do this for their livelihood. Yet this is exactly what some envision happening over the next several years. Google's driverless cars will lead the robotic vehicular onslaught by offering people convenience and safety. The cause of most accidents are us humans, so by taking us out of the loop when it comes to navigating a vehicle from point A to point B, accidents will markedly decrease. By definition, an autonomous vehicle, or driverless car, is one that is able to navigate terrain without the need for human input but human input is also an option. It is undeniably possible that we will see driverless cars on roads around the world at some point in the not-so-distant future. It has been stated that “the next generation of vehicles, such as BMW’s self-driving prototype, could be available within the next decade” and that within that decade Ford, GM, Toyota, Nissan, Volvo, and Audi all plan to develop and sell some form of advanced automation (Knight, 2013). However, before they are rolled off the production lines in their thousands, many questions that currently open need answers and repercussions need to be considered.

The idea of self-driving cars seems to be a futuristic one but is indeed closer than some might imagine. Currently, self-driving car prototypes are being produced by several companies but are not yet on the roads. Driverless cars are vehicles that don’t require a human operator; instead the car makes all the decisions on how to reach the destination. There are three different views on the idea of driverless cars. The first is that it is a revolutionary idea that must be implemented for safety and cost. The second view is that they are an unreliable idea that are not worth the money it would take to produce them. The third view is that people think driverless cars are a good idea, but they would not want to ride in them due to ethical issues such as who would be to blame in an accident. All three opinions are valid and deeply affect the process of actually producing the self-driving vehicles.

As these robots became more advanced they were equipped with internal sensors which gave them a major advantage over first generation robots. This new technology gave them increased information about the world around them. Robots use sensors to detect changes around them and to respond to their surroundings based on the information they receive from certain sensors. There are many types of sensors that perform a variety of tasks by transforming mechanical, heat, and light energies into electrical signals. The signals produced by sensors communicate to the robot on how it should respond to different situations. This gives the robot a higher sense of intelligence and adaptive skills by providing more information about its environment. These skills allow the robot to change their manipulator location and the position of its end effector so that it can work around obstructions in its work envelope. The robot 's surroundings, the precision needed, and what must be sensed all help decide what type of sensor must be used for the robot. Depending on these credentials, robots could be equipped with light, optical, sound, or temperature sensors.
