The novel is presented as a coming-of-age story in which the protagonist grows and develops as he experiences the tragedies of life. Other important themes of the novel is the question of sin and morality and the loss of innocence. At the beginning of the novel, Antonio is only six years old and very much a child in terms of understanding and innocence. Throughout the course of the novel, however, Antonio is exposed to events that force him to lose his innocence such as the death of Lupito by the river, Narciso’s murder by Tenorio, Florence’s accidental drowning, and Ultima’s death. Antonio must learn to balance this loss of innocence in order to become mature and follow his own path in life. Eventually, he is able to overcome his anxieties and realizes that a life of faith and a life of action are mutually incompatible. Because this loss of innocence is a crucial element of the novel and Antonio’s development as a character, the novel would not be as connecting if he were older. Antonio’s older brothers are already beyond this age of self-awareness, and it is important that Antonio is both self-aware and susceptible to change as an
In the novel, Bless me Ultima by Rudolfo Anaya, a little boy named Antonio struggles with knowing what he wants . He’s protected and guided by a wise elder lady whose name is Ultima. But Antonio is the only person that can make a decision about who he wants to become. The book “Bless me Ultima”, Anaya uses strong connotation and symbolism to describe the dark and terrifying revelation in Antonio's dream about his internal beliefs being completely shattered in his mind.
As Antonio is forced to develop into a more independent and well-informed young man, he must come to terms with the harsh realities in the outside world from which he was shielded during his early childhood. He encounters the truth behind what happens at Rosie’s—while he has always been told that Rosie is “evil, not evil like a witch, but evil in other ways” (34), he does not learn of the nature of that “evil”—and that his brother is partaking in it (165); Antonio even begins to have dreams that are far more “intense” than any he has previously experienced (70). Antonio must also confront the reality of the hardships of loss, as the people around him with whom he is acquainted—and even those he loves—die at the hands of others. This is particularly important in Antonio’s exploration of religion, as he begins to question why an all-powerful God would allow his loved ones to die, and why such a deity would not sentence those who killed them to hell (186). Antonio’s loss of innocence is finally and forcefully demonstrated at the end of the novel, when he speaks to his mother “as a man,” commanding her to take the younger (and still “innocent”) children inside (269). This is doubly important, as it demonstrates not only that Antonio has lost enough of his innocence to be speaking “as a man,” but also that he recognizes innocence in others and strives to protect them from what he has
Most people, unless they choose to be an outsider, want to be considered “cool.” Whether it’s to fit in with a peer group, or clique, or to impress someone in particular, like a member of the opposite sex, or a potential mate. Or possibly to gain something from an individual for financial or social gain (see “Scamming”).
Identity is what defines us as a person. Everyone one on earth has their own unique identity. To showcase my identity, I created a collage of images and descriptive words, called an identi-kit. This identi-kit shows what I feel like is my identity to myself and the others. My identi-kit identifies me as a mixed martial artist. The identi-kit has images of a deadly shark with mixed martial arts gloves on that say mixed martial arts on the front and fight shorts with the words competitor and warrior on them. It also has descriptive words like “killer instinct” and “fight” which describe my spirit. There are three assumptions that come to question when asking about one’s identity. The first is if you were born with this

This can be seen between his parents, who’s frequently conflicting views make it difficult for Antonio to accept either of their belief systems, his struggles between the English and Spanish language, and how evil and good affected his innocence.
All three deaths fostered Antonio's religious ambivalence and all had different effects on him. It impacted his life in a satisfying way, he's not stuck on the idea that he has to believe in God or having to become a priest. After a while he just starts to live life off of what life has to propose to him not just strictly live his life with the idea that he has to meet up to God and his mother's expectations.
