Throughout history, and even to this day, there has been racism roaming the streets of America. Back in 1966, the Black Panther Party was created to protect the black citizens from police brutality. The group evolved over time from nationalism, to a broader socialist movement. Throughout the party’s life, the blacks suffered a lot of hate and violence from many. Unlawful violence is never right and the blacks did not deserve to be treated the way they did. The brutality and unfair treatment the black citizens endured back in the twentieth century is absolutely absurd.

Fred Hampton and Mark Clark were shot dead in their apartment while sleeping soundly in their beds. This crime is an absolute tragedy and outrage. There were other Black Panther members in the apartment at the time as well that were either killed, or injured. One injured woman, the wife of Fred Hampton, was eight months pregnant at the time. About a hundred bullets were fired, but experts later determined that only one came from the Panther’s. The police tried to cover up the attack by putting nail holes in the apartment door to make them look like bullet holes shot by the Panthers. This was one of many attempts the government took to try to weaken the Black Power movement. A crime like that should have been deeply punished, but unfortunately little was done in effect. The Panthers in fact were a nonviolent group; however, they did generally stay armed for protection. This aided the government in legitimizing the Panthers aggressive tactics (“Police Kill Two Members of the Black Panther …show more content…
The brutality and unfair treatment the black citizens endured back in the twentieth century is absolutely absurd. The influence the party has had through time will remain in history as an example of what the African Americans had to endure back then, and even still now. Racism still happens today and it will most likely never go away completely. The mark the Panthers had on history, and the blacks breakthrough in the Vietnam War, will forever be remembered as a milestone broken and walked past. If everyone can just open their minds and their hearts and learn to accept every individual of every race as equal, then the world would be a better place. The Black Panthers have opened up the doors for many, as well as set up a bright future for further generations to
Consequently, seventeen-year-old Hutton was gunned down by Oakland police on April 6, 1968. Occasionally, policemen would find themselves interrupting or disassemble gatherings of the
The Black Panther Party was the most influential revolutionary group during the Civil Rights movement era. The BPP became a very strong political power. It influenced many government decisions and attracted the mass media. Yet, due to a number of reasons the BPP eventually collapsed. The Black Panther Party came to its demise due to government operations against it, various mistakes by the Party itself, and by short comings by its own leaders.

In the mid-1960s, Newton attended Merritt College, where he met Bobby Seale. The two radical thinkers were ready to spread their message with a show of force. They began by making national news through protesting a gun bill on April 25th, 1967 by entering the California Legislature fully armed. Newton emerged as a leading figure in the black militant movement and The Panthers were instantly notorious. By the end of 1968 seventeen Panther chapters had opened across the country and thousands of members joined (Wasserman, Steve). Later that year Newton was arrested for allegedly killing an Oakland police officer, he was convicted of voluntary manslaughter and sentenced to two to 15 years in prison. Growing support from across the nation of Black Panthers sparked a “Free Huey” movement which helped Newton’s cause. The case was eventually dismissed after two retrials ended with a hung jury. Newton was greeted by thousands who came to show support outside of the prison.
By 1966, 32% of African-Americans were living below the poverty line, and almost 2/3 of people living in poor urban areas were Black. The Black Panther Party was a socialist and Black nationalist organization that was founded 51 years ago to address these issues among others. The organization, which had a far-left political position, lasted for merely 16 years and its influence continues to impact the world up till this day. It was the largest Black revolutionary organization to ever exist.
The Black Panther Party was formed out of frustration and were formed after the death of civil rights leader James Meredith. The Black Panther Party has influenced a part of America that wouldn't exist without the Panthers. From their politics to their programs, they have been remembered for they have done. Good or bad, they are an important part of history that will not be forgotten.
i. Although the Black Panther Party is seen as plain savage by some it should be remembered for its positive influence on African American lives in America.
Many people had many different ideas about the Black Panthers. Some pictured them as violent hate groups while others thought they were defending themselves and their rights. This all has do with how the organization acted towards society and how they were portrayed in the media or newspaper. The media saw the Panthers as the violent group who used violence against everyone. The Black Panthers had their own newspaper
I attended the 50 Years of the Black Panther Party on November 14. Black Panther is an African American revolutionary party. Blacked Panther formed in Oakland, California, by Huey Newton and Bobby Seale. As a result of police brutality against African Americans in the 60s Huey Newton and Bobby Seale established this group. Patrol the police was the main reason that they started this group. Black Panther got bigger every year, and now after almost 60 years they are one of the leading movements for human rights. Thanks to Black Panther there is other movements with analogy beliefs.
Created as an armed force protecting the black community in Oakland, California, the Black Panther Party (BPP) played a short but important part in the civil rights movement. They openly believed in carrying weapons and taking control of their own neighborhoods to aid their communities and resist police brutality. The organization led a revolution that spread across the nation lead by its two notorious leaders, Huey Newton and Bobby Seale.
Unfair police brutality against African Americans were not rare so the Black Panthers took the initiative to show to the poice that as a community, they were not afraid of standing up for their rights as Americans.
In the chapter that we read, the author described the role that the press and media played on the Black Panthers’ existence. At first, the press portrayed the Black Panthers as a very violent group of people who were being disruptive in the communities. However, after the death of Martin Luther King Jr. and Bobby Hutton, the press shifted the way they talked about the Panthers in a way that helped the White American community understand what the Black Panthers were about. They weren’t just people with rifles who wanted revenge against law enforcement; they wanted real change. This book was more interesting to read because of the way that the author presented the arguments she made. I don’t feel like she was biased towards or against the Black Panthers. In addition, she had more in depth information and analysis of the newspapers and how they portrayed the Black Panthers. The Oakland Tribune had an important role when it came to framing the Black Panthers. A good example of this is by portraying them as “just another black criminal." (Rhodes 118). By calling someone a criminal, people usually start to have a negative opinion towards the person it was directed to. The way that many of the newspapers worded their articles made the Black Panthers seem dangerous. This is a direct influence to the way people portrayed the Black Panthers. The book was my favorite source to get
My short paper I will be writing on the following documents the Black Panthers and the people and the police in Oakland. The Black Panther party founded in 1966 in Oakland. The Black Panthers were always armed with great words of Malcolm X, laws and weapons. The black panthers were a huge part of American history. They fed the hungry, also protected the weak, from racist police officers and was a huge focus on black political and social activism. In the mid-1960s, the black partners started neighborhood control. In these neighborhood controls they were able to provide education and police services. The black panthers were huge on supporting guns, which they believed guns are used for self-defense but also to retaliate against people who had different views about the poor.
Was the Black Panther as bad as the media portrayed them? As most people already know. Beyonce represented the Black Panthers in Super Bowl 50. She had got a lot of backlash for paying homage to the Black Panthers since for some reason. They are considered an internal terrorist of America; although there is a mass amount of evidence that proves this assumption wrong, there is a great deal of people that still believe this is true. The media has told the public that the Black Panthers are our worst terrorist yet some saying that they’re even worst than the Ku Klux Klan. Any kind of positive work that the Black Panthers done has not really been documented till the internet was here to show the evidence, but most likely there won’t be any people researching who already had an opinion about them. The main point of
This website provides an electronic copy of the reasons given for the Black Panthers use of self defense. The parties original purpose was to patrol African American neighborhoods to protect residents from acts of police brutality. It was published online by the Encyclopedia Britannica. This source was originally intended for the African Americans citizens of Oakland California, as well as the rest of the country, to take up their constitutional
