The significant amount of time students spends on their electronic devices is affecting their learning at school. Some schools have banned the use of cell phones. A study at the University of Texas and Louisiana has shown solid proof of exam scores increased by six percent with the restriction on cell phone use. As stated in the Time's piece (ref., University of Texas, Louisiana State University), “We found the impact of banning phones for these students equivalent to an additional hour a week in school, or to increasing the school year by five days,” the study’s authors wrote on the academic blog, The Conversation. In other words, students have been dedicating more time to school when phones were banned. Besides test scores on average increasing, the benefits also include less misconduct amongst the students. It is suggested that the overuse of technology result in negative impacts to mental health. According to Dr. Becker, "The highest cell phone usage occurs during the night which correlates with increased sleep deprivation" (Becker, 2015, slide 8). This is due to people staying up longer and later using a device, stressing over missed call or text, interrupting notifications like calls, texts, or alerts, backlighting, and so on (Becker, 2015, slide 8). Although phones may be used to help students with work, North Eugene high school should ban phones because how much of a distraction they can be in a classroom. Schools that have banned phone at school, 82% of students have a phone on at school.(Document #3) If North Eugene at least has a policy with not having students bring the phones in class, that will help with test scores and participation in class. “Students with laptops had a lower test result than those without. The reason? They were not paying attention to their teachers. Students could take advantage or miss use the privilege of phones in class. There will always be students who act out in class, but the school must discipline those who do and reward those who do not.

In the article “Could Smartphones Bans Help Students Achieve More?” Alexander Lacrasse writes, “Schools could significantly reduce the education achievement gap by prohibiting mobile phone use in schools, and so by allowing phones in school, New York may unintentionally increase the inequalities of outcomes, the London School of education researchers told CNN”(Lacrasse). If New York State banned them as a whole the the gap would be reduced and the students would be more successful in their learning in school, making it a valid reason to not let them be in schools. The increase in scores from underachieving students were even more stark as they saw their scores increase by an average of 14 percent”(Lacrasse). This is a direct results of not having cell phones and how students get better grades. The students would not have to make time to go to the computer lab to use a computer, they could instantly research at their desk (Funding , 2014). For students to use a cell phone in the classroom, they would have to be greatly monitored to keep them focused on research, not playing games, texting, or browsing social media. If the students are not monitored when using a cell phone in class, their learning process is hindered greatly. The grade schools have not enabled their students to use telephones in class since telephones gain their attention from their lessons leading to devastating teaching. Young children who convey their telephone to class damage the school control and their telephones will be picked up by the instructor. Roman adds in her article that “Television, computers, tablets, and phones all influence the amount of time a child spends studying for school.” This means that if there are children using technology instead of studying it can affect their grades in school because instead of using their time wisely they are using it to harm their learning. There will be more students bringing home bad grades due to not going over their notes and learn the material from school.
Some students do not use their digital devices for the good that they have, but for the bad. Many students are more likely to get into serious trouble with they law and have serious legal problems. If students are allowed to use their cell phones in school and they get caught doing illegal things on their digital devices such as sexting, they will be punished by the law. This cause major trouble for some students. Many students will also bully other students more during school hours. If bulling numbers go up it will cause many problems for the school administration. Some students may also stop coming to school if bulling gets to severe. Therefore using digital devices in school causes more problems for the students and the school.
Smartphones have become a big part of our lives. People are always using their smartphones for various reasons and the result is a generation that is connected to their phones.
