I gained my first insight of the complexities of the human mind as a result of a close family member suffering from a range of psychological problems. Until this moment I had never considered health to include our mental wellbeing as well as physical. As I came to this realisation I also became fascinated with how much of our daily life is impacted by our thoughts and how we feel. This led me to begin questioning how and why some people suffer from mental health issues and how this develops over time. This interest led me to take part in a FutureLearn course entitled 'Babies in Mind' which has allowed me to begin to understand the basic functions of the brain and also how the brain develops over time, analysing the impacts of factors such as …show more content…
Sociology allowed me to briefly cover the nature vs nature debate and also gave me the opportunity to conduct an independent research project based on primary socialisation and the connection to gender scripts. I am especially looking forward to furthering my understanding of these topics of interest, as well as conducting my own research. I feel that helping others is a very important aspect of life and being involved in this sector would give me the opportunity to do so. Psychology is a majorly important field in life and is used in many aspects of the world but for me, the focus would be to work in schools or private clinics with children as I especially enjoy working with them and watching them grow and develop. It is definitely a future aim of mine to work with children, whether this be in psychology or another sector. I feel this course would help me to understand how the brain develops over time and the implications this has on the …show more content…
This once again has helped me to gain confidence and communication skills and has given me the opportunity to experience working with a variety of children varying in ages and allowed me a better insight to the challenges one could be faced when working with children. Whilst doing this, I was expected to work alongside members of staff, giving feedback on students as well as helping with the admin side of the job, working with staff in their office. Rosa Louise McCauley Parks (February 4, 1913 – October 24, 2005) was an African American civil rights activist, whom the United States Congress called "the first lady of civil rights" and "the mother of the freedom movement". Outside of my academic studies I also enjoy to learn and speak Spanish. Spanish is a passion of mine which I feel has helped me to develop my knowledge of language- not only in Spanish but also in English. I feel this knowledge of a second language shows that I am open new experiences and also able to think logically. Spanish is something which I hope to continue with and I would love to teach English abroad at some point in the future. I hope I have made it clear to you that my curiosity, ambition and drive and the fact that the subject intrigues and fascinates me makes me the ideal candidate not only to study this course, but has also prepared me for a life in

The definitions of mental health and mental illness can vary greatly and most are subjective, simplistic or are only partial definitions (Freshwater & Boyd, 2006). Freshwater and Boyd (2006) highlight the idea of mental health and illness being viewed as a “continuum”, where people are located at different points due to life events, developmental stages and genetic influence throughout their lives. As Hinshaw and Cicchetti (2000) state individuals with mental illness aren’t either “ill” or “well”, instead they experience episodes of remission and relapse over the course of their lives. From a medical view

At home, I first spoke Spanish. My parents came from Mexico to Turlock, California in the 90's and could not speak English sufficiently. Before I was born, the majority of my family were born in Jalisco, Mexico. As a child, my parents taught me how to speak Spanish and I learned English from a tutor who came to my house to teach basic phrases and writing in Spanish and English. This way, I could be fluent with both. I am grateful that my parents assigned me to the program, which prepared me for elementary school. For this reason, I still suspect that without that program I could not be in Honors and AP classes that I have today. What additionally motivates me to speak Spanish efficiently is that I have been able to assist others by translating, and the skill teaches me further of another culture. When I am in Mexico, I feel comfortable and I enjoy speaking Spanish in stores and in the plazas around the towns. Not only that, but I love being able to talk to family fluently. Overall, speaking Spanish feels important to me in order to be closer to my family and the culture.

One of the Champions of the American Civil Rights Movement was Rosa Parks. A native of Tuskegee Alabama, she was said by some to be the mother of the African American Civil Rights Movement. Making a living as a seamstress, she was highly involved in the local efforts of the N.A.A.C.P. (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People) as well as exceedingly active in her church congregation, Rosa Parks would become infamous for simply refusing to be treated differently because of the color of her skin. Aboard the Cleveland Avenue bus coming home from work on the evening of December 1st 1955, an already weary Rosa Parks was instructed by the bus driver to surrender her seat to a Caucasian man who had boarded the bus subsequent to her. When she refused to do so, the police were summoned and she consequentially was arrested. This was her first time to be under arrest, but she conducted herself in a professional and dignified manner despite the extreme injustice she was being served (Johnson 212). Jo Ann Robinson called Rasa Parks a woman of "high morals and a strong character". She was exactly what the N.A.A.C.P. needed for a plaintiff in their proposed civil suit against the bus company (Marcus 260).
