Assisted Living Concepts Inc., hereafter referred to as ALC, was a Nevada corporation formed in 1994 with its principal place of business in Menomonee Falls, Wisconsin. ALC provides senior assisted living residences that provide multiple personal services for their residences. ALC was purchased by Extendicare Health Services, Inc. in January 2005. In 2006 ALC was spun off from Extendicare as a publicly traded company. As of December 31, 2012 ALC had 211 assisted and independent living residences in 20 states totaling 9,348 units with 4,600 employees. ALC generated revenues in excess of $228 million dollars for year-end 2012 (Assisted Living Concepts, Inc. 2013). In July 2013, ALC was acquired by the private equity firm TPG Capital, L.P. for $278.3 million dollars (Boulton 2013). In March 2014 ALC changed their name to Enlivant (Enlivant 2014).

The first author of the article, Medicaid Funding for Assisted Living Care: A Five-State Examination, is Eric Carlson. Carlson is the directing attorney under the National Senior Citizens Law Center (NSCLC). He graduated summa cum luade from the University of Minnesota, and obtained his law degree from Boalt Hall School of Law at the University of California Berkeley. Most of his career has been spent advocating for older adults in nursing homes and assisted living facilities. Carlson is very knowledgeable on these topics, and frequently presents to other attorneys and social workers at conferences nation-wide about these issues (NSCLC).

For this assignment I decided to write my reflection paper on the “Life and Death in Assisted Living” video. Out of all the videos that were presented to me, I felt this video was the most interesting to me. This video showed many different incidents that happen assisted living facility on the day to day, that many people including myself was not aware of. One of the main reasons I find this video interesting is, because one day I plan to be an administrator at an assisted living. I preferably want to be an administrator of an assisted living with a hundred beds or more. As an administrator I want to make sure I understand the positions, feelings, and point of views from everyone involved in the facility, including from the residents as well.

When adult children know that an elderly parent should move to assisted living, it can be an emotionally stressful time while struggling to convince this person to do so. If you're dealing with this situation, consider some strategies that may help encourage your parent to accept this step instead of battling against it.

Typically programming is centered on the needs of the older individuals who are the majority in this environment and those that are under the age of 65 may not be having their needs met. As the older adult population in the United States continues its accelerated growth, there is a growing concern about the long-term care options for these elders. While nursing homes are no longer desirable and costly for federal and state governments, viable alternatives are being sought to meet this need. The development and rapid expansion of the numbers of assisted living communities have grown as older adults, family caregivers and government bureaucrats are looking for lower cost options. How beneficial are assisted living communities for the older adults that live in them? Most older adults seek to avoid multiple moves to meet their care needs and desire to age in place within a residential setting. The findings of this study conclude that assisted living communities provide significant benefits to older adults by the provision of supportive services to help in areas of activities of daily living. There are some assisted living communities that are more able to accommodate residents to age in place based on the provision of necessary services, highly personalized service and reasonable accommodations that are needed to help with physical decline. In 2004, a survey was done by Portland State University. This survey illustrates some important information about the difference between these two settings. Results compared with these surveys show ways in which these two services are intertwined and ways that they are different. It has been revealed that the resident populations that are being served in assisted living and nursing home settings are interestingly similar. This survey states nearly 76 percent of both institutions are women, and residents in an assisted living setting are more likely to be widowed (Portland State University).

Assisted living has become the generic name for most senior living facilities. However, today these facilities come in many different sizes and levels of care. Early in history there were only two choices for seniors, they could age at home with family or they could enter a nursing home. Many seniors who couldn’t completely live on their own and were still to some degree independent and able bodied did not need higher levels of care offered at nursing facilities; creating a need for different types of senior living. Assisted living became a more ideal lifestyle for seniors who wanted to age independently. Facilities have now begun to tailor their offerings to specific populations creating specialties with differing levels of care. With the U.S. population aging there is not only an increase in number of senior facilities but also their characteristics.

Assisted living facilities are fitting for people who don’t require much daily care. They are also known by other names such as residential care, congregate housing, boarding home, adult congregate care, or domiciliary care. Medical care doesn’t go beyond assistance with meds or the occasional skilled nursing care. Residents spend usually up to 3 years and eventually move on to nursing homes.

As you get older you will notice that your brain functions will decrease in certain places. Your cognitive function will decrease because your blood vessels will shrink and that reduces the amount of oxygen to your brain, which causes memory loss.
