"What is necessary to change a person is to change his awareness of himself. --
Looking back from when I began my career, I can say I came a long way learning the concepts of understanding the expectations that arose from all my positions. In my first job just after graduating, I was appointed as a Business Accountant of a multinational company. Since then, I was caught in the myth that people who were in leadership positions or high ranking were leaders. Being in a junior position, I could have the least effect on any new ideas as my voice seems to have landed in deaf ears. I have seen how those businesses were not in line with their Missions and Values only to find later that many of the staff had left the company.
When most people are asked if they could go anywhere in the world, they try and think of an extraordinary place. I have always wanted to see where the president of the United States resides and makes all his important decisions. Two goals I hope to achieve by going on this trip are exposing myself to different ways of life and learning how I can help others in need. It is evident we are not all the same. Some of us have had to overcome greater obsticals than others, yet we are all living for a better something. First of all, I would develop relationships with the staff from my school. Being able to have one on one connections with them would allow me to have a close bond, and in the future they would be able to write recommendation letters for me. Also, I would be able to increase my social skills by bonding with classmates, staff, and especially the Puerto Ricans. Interacting with these people would help me in my field of study. Being part of the dental hygiene program, I would need to know about people's backgrounds, and I have to know how to relate to my patients. This trip would allow me to gain national experience by flying overseas rather than by car. It would also be the first step to one day being able to fly internationally. Being in Puerto Rico, I hope to learn a lot about the culture, specifically because it is a Latin culture. Being Mexican, I would love to see the similarities and differences between the cultures.
Prior to this trip, I had never taken an american history class so I was very ignorant about the past of our great country. I had not yet learned much about the wars fought, the sacrifices made, and the rights defended by the people in our nation.
