It has come to my attention that a fight, which was between a freshman and a senior, occurred today. There is no excuse for this conduct. Confucianism, I believe, is a method that would be a solution for fixing these recurring fights. Through Ren and Li, structure of relationships, and ethical rulings, this school would obtain a structured and safe environment. As a punishment, I think it is necessary for the students to understand that what they did was wrong, and in order to achieve this, I recommend they accompany each other to lunch and discuss their actions. As well making them discuss their actions, there should be a meeting with the Upper School that establishes shame in the ninth and twelfth grader -- then they will realize, truly, …show more content…
Knowing that this fight broke out because the senior thought a freshman was in the way, and, being angry, the senior shoved the freshman, we see that Ren and Li were violated. The correct feelings in this situation would have led to the correct action -- therefore, if Ren and Li had been practiced at this school, this fight wouldn’t have happened. In the Analects, Confucius states: “First he behaves properly and then he speaks, so that his words follow his actions.” If the twelfth grader did this, the ninth grader would have reacted differently. Also written in the Analects: “If he is kind, he will be able to influence others.” If the senior had generated in this situation, the outcome would have been peaceful. Now, to go more in depth about the relationships between the senior and the freshman: the senior in this specific instance was superior to the freshman, but absolutely did not have the right to hurt the freshman. The senior is supposed to be a leader to the freshman, an influence, and failed in both respects. Finally, there should have been rules in place that do not stand for this kind of behavior. Rules in this school should not be installed forcefully, or even just written -- they should morally and ethically be placed into the school, as well as the inhabitants of it. Both students should feel shame from this circumstance, because there should
I believe that the dilemma is simple: a student challenges the school official authority. I said simple because not for the dilemma’s complexity rather for the regularity with which a young behave in a rebellious manner.
In the case study Appropriate Punishment Versus Political Expediency, nine African American male teenagers were severely punished for their involvement in a violent altercation at a high school football game. Some people in the local community; especially the African American population became outraged by the school board’s ruling. Other community members, including many white residents, and school board officials thought the punishment was just. This situation exposes many controversial issues occurring within the educational system. Topics such as race relations and appropriateness in student discipline were prominent. With strong political and social context associated with these subject matters, there are complexities in addressing these types of situations. In any event, educational leaders and district representatives should aim to handle matters by considering the child’s best interest. They should also use the principle of subsidiarity to deal with challenges that may arise. School executives ought to implement effective solutions
Confucianism had a positive impact on China because it increased social stability. Confucianism is a philosophy which focused on everyday problems and the relationships between people. It’s main goal was to restore peace, harmony and social order. Confucius is the creator of Confucianism believed that societies like China had lost touch traditions and morals so he made the concept “filial piety” which stressed “respect for ones parents, elders, and ancestors… bring a good name to ones parents and ancestors… he believed that if everyone respected, their family, was obedient, and worked hard to bring honor to their families name”. (Document 1).
We hold these truths to be axiomatic: that all students, no matter their background, ethnicity, or rank, are created equal in status and in identity; no student is higher than the other. Each student is equipped with secure and unalienable Rights; that among these rights are Respect, Rightful Identity, and Freedom of Speech. We also believe that rules are formed to protect these certain rights and that the power of these rules comes from the power of the students; whenever any part of the rule fails to protect these rights, it is the right of the students to change it and to form a new rule that follows such principles which organizes its powers to end in Security and Happiness. Fair judgment, as a matter of fact, will ordain to say that long prevailing consequences should not be changed because of trivial, temporary, or fleeting reasons; and, in fact, history proves that students are more likely to suffer the bullying,
A Critical Incident analysis of Symbolic Violence” examines a prevailing theme of symbolic violence within the school system. An important example from the text is when Herr and Anderson examined Mrs. R’s and Mr. Y’s classroom and the environment the students were learning in. To begin, Mrs. R perpetuates that her students cannot be helped, she is authoritative, and operates on this idea of respect, however, fails to give respect back to her students (Herr & Anderson, 2003). The text explains this as she is failing to recognize her students’ abilities, and by doing so created a hostile environment of the students not wanting to be there, or wanting to learn (Herr & Anderson, 2003). Mrs. R was working in a symbolically violent environment that was not working to help her student learn. On the other hand, Herr and Andersons analysis of Mr. Y showed the difference in quality. Mr. Y was respectful to his students. He worked with the students to ensure through their student-teacher relationship was respectful. Through this respect and mutual understanding, Mr. Y was able to push his student to thrive (Herr & Anderson, 2003). Thusly, we can begin to see how schools perpetuate the social hierarchy system (Cruz, 2018). This support for the “dominate” ideology does not allow for others who do not fit into the dominate culture to thrive properly, and as a result has an effect on the level of success people can reach if are
In conflict perspective the dominate person had more power than the other in the classroom
“You have taken away the discretion of from the teachers and the principles to be able to control their classrooms,” said Malliotakis. “Now you have an environment where students feel they can bring weapons in the classrooms, drugs to schools, they can bully other students, they can disrespect their teachers. We need to restore discipline in the classroom”
This is a complete flip of the script from when in 5th grade when given the opportunity and they all said nothing. To in 6th grade, all the children seize the opportunity to all rat out Om to the teacher. As the class had this opportunity they began to utilize it, Han speaks of, “They seemed to be no more than traitors who had waited for Sokdae to fall before jumping in on him and walking all over him”(Munyol 97). This is a perfect example of how abandonment of principle leads to submission. After being beaten and seeing their leader fall, one after another they gave up their principals and beliefs in the old system and submitted to the new teacher.
Some people don’t think that discipline is an issue. For example, Nick said that the discipline system is “effective.” However, others like Mason and Jacob, thought that it was a serious issue in our school. When asked, Jacob said “I don’t think it is teaching the kids that there are consequences
That is a valuable and entailed response to the fact that we as the student’s educators, we try to teach what are the school polices, procedures, and requirement’s while in their campus. Yet many times the student’s culture takes a toll on the day to day operation of a student’s day of instruction. When a student is till they need to do a certain responsibility to the polices. They tend to act like they must follow the rule their parents have installed in them. Schools are as well required to hold the students accountable for their actions but reality is in the times of today, parents tell their student that they make the rules and they need to follow them. There is a passage in the book that direct to the parents. Boston Prep students, teachers,
Confucianism has easily been influential in the development of the Chinese state through history. In fact, the core ideals of Confucianism have evolved. Despite the harsh repression of Confucianism by Marxist revolutionaries during the second half of the twentieth century, Confucian values continues to be influential in Chinese society and recently, Confucian political philosophy has resurfaced again. In addition, the political ideas and social ethics of Confucianism can provide the basis for a new, functional form of government in China. Confucianism can be a viable political philosophy for China in the twenty first century because many intellectuals have turned to Confucianism to make sense of such social
Confucius was born in an impoverished family. Throughout his childhood he was very eager to learn so his mother fostered that. He had several small positions in government in his home state, Lu. He was the first ever teacher/educationalist in the history of China. His teachings found in the Analects, discusses ethical modules family, politics, economy, and more. In his teachings he promotes humanness (ren), ritual propriety (li), and the developing of exemplary persons (Junzi). (Li pg. 87)
Confucianism is a time enduring philosophy that has stood up to invading clans, war, resentment, enforcement and infringement of new philosophies, and eventually, revival. For almost 80 years, up until the late 1970’s, Confucianism and its ideas and values have been all but wiped away from China. Though effort was made to remove Confucianism for good from China by the Communist leader Mao Zedong in 1949, the ideas and values were so deeply embedded into peoples mind and the culture that even suppression could not keep it out of the culture and practices. The main factor that has brought Confucianism back into the limelight in China and other East Asian countries is the recent
Most ancient philosophical ideas developed in the ancient Chinese empires are believed to have their roots from Confucius. Confucianism was a simple way of life propagated by Confucius around the fifth and sixth century BC. Often perceived as a religion and other times as philosophy, it is conceivably best unspoken as a comprehensive humanism that neither slights nor denies heaven. The Chinese populaces have devotedly observed Confucianism for nearly two millennia. It has become an implicit part of their culture. However, there seem to be a cod division among its proponents holding contrasting perspectives and understanding with respect to it. The central focus of this presentation is to address the questions whether Confucianism is a religion or a philosophy or it encompasses both.
4. What conflicts did you observe in this classroom? What conflict resolution methods could you use to resolve the conflicts in this classroom? Are there any peer mediation methods that you could use in this scenario?
