Are you giving your best to be successful in AP Calculus class? Explain. I don't think I'm giving my best to be successful in AP Calculus. I feel like you can never give your best, you can always give some more. So I haven't reached my full potential. I know I’m not doing my best on AP Calculus because I don’t have 100%, even though getting 100% would be difficult in AP Calculus, I know is not impossible. 5. What do you think about Homework? Why do you need to do it every day? Nobody likes the act of doing homework, I hate it, specially because all of my classes give me homework, but I still do it because I know it's important, after I do it I feel accomplished. It's important to do homework everyday because homework can help you become a better student in several different ways. Homework gives you valuable practice with what you’ve learned in the classroom. You’ve been up for hours trying to finish your homework, which all seems so repetitive. You question how beneficial completing this homework actually is. A routine you all know too well. Homework has been a highly discussed topic for years. Everyone questions the benefits and reward. People should be informed about homework and the effects it actually has. Homework just causes stress, doesn't always help us learn the material, and doesn't prove to be helpful in standardized testing.
I won’t accept failure. 2% was how close I was from failing AP Calculus. Calculus class was the only class where I squandered time because I stopped caring. I was willing to accept a D because that was the easiest option. In the end I did not want to accept that because I had something to prove for myself. If I start giving up for a class then that could have an effect on other things that I deem “difficult.”
On paper, I may not be the best student. I know very well that I am not the brightest student that this university has come across. Nonetheless, my drive and determination is something that I am very proud of. I strive to put my all into every aspect of my education. I remember junior year of high school being the most challenging year I have ever had. I took the initiative of taking three AP level courses all in one semester. I took AP U.S. History, AP Language, and AP Statistics head on that semester. I had heard rumors about AP U.S. History being “the hardest class you will ever take in high school”. That terrified me from the moment I first entered the classroom. With the help of an amazing teacher, it became my favorite class right away. In 2011-2012, I began teaching AP Calculus AB; a course offered since 1995. In that time, enrollment has increased by 33% in spite of three additional AP mathematics classes being added to the curriculum. This year for the first time in school history, there are two AP Calculus AB classes with a total of 41 students. Also, the number of qualifying exam scores increased by 1300%. In 2012, my first year of teaching AP Calculus, I only had five students take the exam with only one student making a qualifying score. In 2014, for the first time in school history, a student scored a 5 on the AP Calculus exam; three students achieved this. In 2016, I increased the number of students taking the exam to twenty-one with fourteen students making a qualifying score. Recently, Andres, a boy enrolled in Advanced Placement class, was given the option to do a five paged extra credit assignment. His grade would not be affected if he didn’t do the assignment. The easier thing to do would be to not do the extra credit work and focus on other things. However, Andres knows that he would feel guilty over this. By ignoring the opportunity to better his grade, he would also be ignoring his potential. To Andres, as well as several others, having failed at a huge task is normal. Physics has been both a challenging and deeply beneficial course. The reason this course has been difficult for me isn’t because it is an AP class. It also isn’t because I am only a sophomore, my age has no real impact in this instance. This class has been difficult for me because it presented several ideas in ways I had never challenged before. It has truly made me question my way of thinking and has opened up my eyes to the world around me. Some of the things I’ve learned in class I’ve already observed before but never knew why. Other things I’ve been blind to and finding out the truth gives me a whole new perspective. I have had to retrain my brain out of its misconception of reality. Learning something entirely new is easy. The real challenge occurs when you have to forget what you thought you knew and replace it with something entirely different.
I spent the summer and the majority of the next semester polishing my skills and learning new methods through online classes and an extensive supply of problems. Math constantly gave me something to do, even in the busy frenzy that was Sophomore year. Many times, I frantically rushed through homework, or foolishly procrastinated it in order to spend a few hours holed up in my room on a Saturday with pencils, papers, and practice problems. Practicing these issues for months and going into detailed steps encouraged me to get problems right. First of all, homework causes material being taught in class the next day to have greater relevance and is easier to understand. Students who don’t do their homework tend to not understand the material being taught the next day as described in the article, “Why Homework Matters: Top Five (5) Reasons You Probably Should Do Your Homework” by Michael Bromley. According to the article, “If you don’t do your homework, you will most often not know what the teacher is doing in class the next day. (Bromley 2)” If you did do your homework, you would better understand the material being taught the next day. If you don’t do your homework, would fall behind the students who did do their homework. We hate it and we love it what is it homework!! I know, I know why are you talking about this I hate homework. homework sucks!! The majority of trigonometry was a difficult idea for me to understand until I finally was able to sit down and practice over and over until I did understand all of the information and how to do it completely. There are also many other thing in which I do not fully understand and would like to put forth more effort and be able have in my list of skills to pull from when necessary. All of the skills that I have learned and am going to soon learn will help me in my future, like classes such as calculus which I plan to take in my first year of college; these skills will also help in many other future classes.
