Sindy Chen Mr. Kirkendoll APUSH February 13, 2016 In the post-Civil War United States, corporations grew significantly in number, size and influence. During this time period, big business impacted the economy politically, economically and the way Americans responded changed over time. As business started to grow, some companies monopolized other companies while some companies also started to lose their business. Furthermore, people started to have more leisure time and business played a role in providing entertainment for its people. These changes over the past thirty years were molded by the actions and development of big business. Economically, many of the business’ such as railroads and steel companies dominated the industry. Many of the workers “demand a reduction of the hours of labor”(Document G), because they were required to work long hours with little pay in bad working conditions. Moreover, the workers had to comply to their bosses with no questions asked, “in which the individual no longer works as independently as formerly, but as a private in the ranks, obeying orders, keeping step, as it were, to the tap of the drum”(Document C). The labors did not work in good conditions, but because the economy was bad, workers could not just quit their job at their own free will. They needed money to pay for their tenements and food, and many of them lived in hull-houses or tenements stuffed with other families and individuals in the same position as them. On the other hand, according to the statistics provided by document A, food prices and fuel and lightening prices decreased significantly over the the years from 1870 to 1899. The cost of living also decreased over the years, but barely. Comparatively, big businesses started opening department stores which attracted the consumers during their leisure time. Department stores were “hundreds of stores coordinated into one and laid out” all under one roof which made it easier for the consumers to shop. Individuals started to enjoy leisure, while some went and shopped, some enjoyed movies and even walking around the
“From 1781 to 1789 the Articles of Confederation provided the United States with an effective government.” This statement is quite bold considering that the Articles lasted only eight years. In some ways this form of government was effective and in some ways it was not. It did provide the newly formed American colonies with the means to govern themselves in the manner that they wished to be governed and set the rules for operations of the United States government. On the other hand, it was ineffective because there was no president or executive agencies or judiciary, nor was there a tax base or even a way to pay off state and national debts from war years. They could also be called ineffective because of their limited scope and the
After the Civil war, large businesses ruled America. Prior to the industrial revolution, the government upheld a hands-off approach towards business. Under the laissez-faire principle, free, unregulated markets led to competition, yet this system suffered under the wrath of growing corporations. The impact of big business on the economy and politics was immense during 1870 to 1899. Corporations were growing significantly in number and size, which had a domineering affect on American economy and defined American life.
1.If you were a poorer or common person (not economically elite) in 18th century America, which region would be most beneficial for you to achieve your goal of economic, social, or political independence?
Document A: According to Article II of the Constitution, the President has the power to carry out the laws. He officially becomes commander in chief of the Army and Navy of the United States, and of the militia of the several states, allowing him/her to have control over them. The President is responsible for making sure the laws are enforced.
What makes a person’s spirit triumph ? Love,Laughter, and Nature are all what make a person’s spirit triumph.
Around the 15th century, when the Americas were discovered, Europe was going through a great religious change. There were many disputes in Europe about the Roman Catholic Church and its teachings. Later, the two prominent religious figures that completely impacted the way people view religion in a different light were a German monk named Martin Luther, and a Frenchman named John Calvin. That’s when they started a religious reformation. Some countries, such as France and England, were most affected by the sudden change, which caused them to become slow to colonize in the New World. However, the Spanish and the Portuguese were unaffected and were the first to arrive in America, so their Catholic church and beliefs also went with them. Thus, Catholicism
The revolutionary war was a fight for independence and created America but some people think the revolutionary war was not so revolutionary. I believe the revolutionary war was not revolutionary. In document four, the data showed that there were less wealthy and less well to do in the northern states and in the middle states there were less wealthy between 1765 and 1785. This shows that America’s economics and sustainability were lowered and not as good as it used to be. In document 6, in 1819 a African American valedictorian gave a speech about how no one will employ him, white boys won’t work with him, and white clerks won’t associate with him. He said, “Can you be surprised by my discouragement.” Which shows colored people still have not
During the mid-15th to 18th centuries, the emergence of changes in popular culture, leisure activities, and rituals contributed to modern European ideals. The scientific revolution caused people to question the universe around them, leading to new discoveries about the natural world. Urbanization within Europe also contributed to the modernization of European ideals, helping to break out of communal folk norms. New trade routes and exploration in other countries introduced new products to Europe, diversifying European food and drink, as well as medicine. The developments of cultural change, modern thinking, and economic advances in Europe impacted societal norms, though many of the same folk ideals still continued to influence European daily life.
The reactions from the people during the crash was somewhat the same as the events from the Bible. In Deuteronomy 31:8 stated “The Lord himself goes before you and will be with you: he will never leave you nor forsake you, do not be afraid; do not be discourage.” (“Bible Gateway”). When Moses said this to Joshua, he tried to encourage Joshua when he had to go with the people of Israel, that he will be there, always trust him and do not be afraid. When the stock market crashed, people were panicking and didn’t know what to do (Stock). Another verse that relates to the event is John 16:33, “I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble, But take heart! I have overcome the world.” This verse
Secondly, his inspiration caused everyone to get up off their chairs and fight and people who thought it was the end to believe and know that they will win. They were all about victory, victory alone, even if odds were against, they just believed in victory and never thought about losing or even giving up on the hardest of situations possible. Inspiration would allow you to see things you may have never seen not only physically, but also mentally, such as a sense of purpose, dreams, goals, doing the impossible or the impossible for you. That is what some things that Winston Churchill would try to make you to believe or convince you for some of these types of reasoning. In Source A, page 265, paragraph 4, lines 15-19 it states that “I take up my task in buoyancy and hope.
Between 1865 and 1939 not all Americans accepted big business dominance. In the beginning of this era
I belief they did not make good choices with the amount of innocent people who died and also did not give everyone a fair share of letting people have freedom. I think they only ever believed what everyone else said and did, and for those who spoke up and said the truth they didn’t respect or listen to their opinions and caused many others to get away with bad things while good people died and suffered. Parris the minister was disliked by many of the residents because of his poor character. He had a very greedy, domineering personality. Both their motives seemed to be revengeful and wanting political power. Joseph also wanted a Republican controlled Congress.
Context: Following the reconstruction era and the introduction of the industrial culture, businesses grew large and powerful, as did their owners and became some of the most influential. The growing production of steel and oil allowed for many businesses to grow and therefore impact Americans life. Big business controlled the government through corruption, controlled the economy that affected many workers lives, and created many different labor conditions that would make change in the society through the constant labor rights. Thesis: Big influence Paragraph 1: Political (Doc 2) With the rise of big industries in politics such as Rockefeller's Standard Oil Company, there came consequence for the people .
This new era of society caused an extreme growth in entrepreneurship and gave way for the expansion of manufacturing, which gave way for more jobs. Many poor families living in rural areas moved to the city near the factories for a change to escape poverty and live a better life. Many people, however, were extremely shocked to find that they were not living the life they had anticipated. The working conditions proved to be harsh. Factories were not sanitized and help numerous diseases. Factories also proved to be dangerous, and people worked long and exhausting hours at these factories. Many people worked up to sixteen hours a day, this included men, women, and children.
The transportation industry exploded with the inventions of automobiles and locomotives that pulled trains which carried millions of people to and from their destinations. As these modes of transportation increased, so did the mining and production of coal,
