My mother works every day from eight AM until four thirty PM, and when she comes home, she still continues to work. Sometimes I do not get to see her until eight o’clock at night because she is working hard on other activities. She prepares all of the meals, cleans the house, and does the laundry. Vonda is also the city clerk for the City of Matlock; therefore, she does a lot of bookwork too. She is always hardworking on the weekends. For example, she teaches Sunday school and plays the piano for the choir at church. Her relationship with her mother affects the way she relates to people, especially her mother. Bechdel begins this portrayal of Alison’s relationship with her mother on the cover of the book. The red, wood-like background of the cover of the book, is behind all of the other objects. This background is most likely a desk or table of some sort with several objects sitting on top of it. Firstly, I notice the mirror. Mirrors are typically seen as a symbol of self-indulgence and vainness. The mirror is golden and the title of the book, Are You My Mother? is placed in the mirror itself. Secondly, I see the red beaded necklace. The beads are not completely on the book cover. Beads, jewelry, and the color red are often seen as signs of affluence and richness. Next, I see the black and white picture. What appears to be two females are present in the picture. One is older than the other. The woman in the picture looks like she is sitting and appears to be smoking and reading some sort of book, magazine, or newspaper. There is a girl off to the left side of the woman in the picture, clasping her hands, smiling, and watching the woman from a distance. Finally, I notice the lipstick on the cover. The lipstick is in a white container with a gold band. I can clearly see that it is a red shade of lipstick. Again, red lipstick is usually seen worn on someone of importance.

My mother is not only my mom but a daughter, wife, sister and friend. She is a nurse aide at the La Junta High School, an EMT for the La Junta Fire Department, a waitress at Mexico City and a part of numerous community services. A lot of my family members and teachers say she is very kind, and I can agree on that because she wouldn't get mad often, but she will get mad. When she needs to.leaving my school. There are many people that have the strongest impact in your lives. They are your role model and you want to be like them. These can be your family members, friends, or people that you just see on T.V. Whoever they might be they impacted your life because of want you learned from them. One person that had the strongest impact that made me who I am today is my mom. My mom had impacted my life and made me who I am today because she taught how to treat other how I want to be treated, don't judge other people because of their looks, and if you don't try you won't succeed. These are only the few lesson that I learned from my mom as a kid.

Besides being compassionate my mother is thoughtful. She stays at work late if someone needs help with theirs. She brings my grandmother dinner and runs errands for her. She is always putting others before herself. For instance, last year I began singing in the choir at Iowa State. It was really important to me because singing has always been a passion of mine. She drove to Ames for every single concert. It meant a lot to me to have her in the audience supporting me. This year I also started singing in the choir at my church. I was really excited and nervous about singing the first Sunday so few days before I was going to sing she gave me a beautiful necklace with a star pendant on it. I remember her warm hug and her telling me good luck and that I was ‘her star’. It touched me that she took time out of her busy schedule to encourage and support things that she knew were important to me. She could have just wished me well and enjoyed her few minutes of spare time, but instead she put me first.

I remember my mom reading to me in Spanish was I was about four years old. The smell of Cuban coffee would fill up the room every night as I was being read to. I would always play out the stories in my head I would go to sleep. This always had a positive impact as I grew older and wiser. Although I had never stopped using my imagination, especially when it came to books. I was inspired to read to my younger sister and teach her all that I had already learned.
