In the summer of 2015, I attended an encampment called Devil Pups. Devil Pups is a ten day long program in Marine Corps Base Camp Pendleton that teaches American youth the values of discipline, teamwork, and motivation. The ten day encampment heavily resembles Marine Corps boot camp, though it is not meant to be a recruiting program for the Marine Corps. While in a Marine Infantry unit you will have a multitude of personnel assigned to your command and with you. These Marines come from every walk of life, all fifty states, and even different countries. This means you will have different religions and differences in culture mixed in. In a combat situation, there is no place for indifference. When I arrived to III Marine Expeditionary Force in Okinawa, Japan, the unit lacked esprit de corps. The operational tempo was very high and many Marines barely had time to see their family. Although the mission always came first, many of these Marines were coming to Okinawa after deployments to Iraq, Afghanistan, or both. I spent the first few weeks checking in and listening to the Marines. They immediately sensed that I cared about the mission but also about them personally. As we bonded as a unit, the Marines became more willing to perform the long hours necessary. The second principle that I acquired from the Marines was the spirit of determination and commitment. In the Marines, you will endure and sacrifice for your fellow Marine. It certainly was not fun to work your butt off to only pay for someone else’s mistake. It is easy to complain, but instead, you go help the weaker Marine in your unit and teach them how to become faster and grow stronger.
