Technology’s adoption encourages rethinking of how information is acquired and processed, how people learn, how they are empowered, what jobs will be in highest demand, and what the nature of learning and useful information is. With the increasing accessibility, affordability, and popularity of laptops and tablets, it is essential for students, professors, and institutions to welcome these devices in the classroom. Technology’s benefits to the professor, student, and society far outweigh any perceived disadvantages.

Remember that scary, grotesque, evil monster we were all scared of when we were younger? Well, it's alive, we just can't see it, and it's called technology. As we all know, technology is changing and evolving every day; but it's almost as if the technology is taking over the minds of our future generation. Schools are incorporating technology into learning more and more all the time. Every month there is a new phone, tablet, television, laptop and even thousands of websites. These devices can come in handy and can be helpful, but they almost are consuming everyone's mind and minimizing critical thinking. Many of technology users are children or young adults. Although the use of technology in education can have some positive results, it has more negative effects that are affecting students.

Although books are great means of learning, the process of looking up everything in them was both tedious and time consuming. In present days, students possess the power to hold all information at the press of a button. This convenience saves time and allows students to learn specifically what they need. Today, children would be at a disadvantage if they did not have Internet access at home. One article stated that children at their school are given laptops to aid in their learning; however, nine percent of the children do not have Internet access at home. With a converted curriculum shifted towards research and project based learning, it is impossible for these children to do what is expected of them in class (Monahan, 2014). Eighty five percent of America has Internet access, so it is no surprise that most curriculums in schools are primarily based on computers nowadays. Technology and learning are becoming more and more hand in hand as technology gets improved and learning styles are figured out about students. There are a couple of learning theories that teachers need to know to provide students with the best learning situations to make sure that students are learning everything that they need, so they can be ready and successful today and are able to go into the workforce and be a benefit to future employers. Books and face to face learning have started to dissipate as technology has taken over. The internet has taken over the teaching world. Apps have been on the rise since iPads and laptops have been introduced into school districts around the country. Applications like Notability, Desmos, and Quizlet have made it easier for kids to study on their own. Online classes are also growing more and more popular since students can double up on classes and get more credits in less time. Younger students don’t use devices for the same reasons, but to catch up on things they may miss in school due to absences or other extenuating circumstances. The school issued electronics are also great for reviewing materials at home, in the instances of an upcoming test. Most classes and teachers have the added help of being able to teach and or use devices for students benefit. Other classes, like art or gym do not benefit. Digital technologies are very important to our student’s world as they use them to connect with each other, learn new skills and pursue their interest. Luckey (2009) stated “For students in particular, technology is almost an extension of themselves. They use it to communicate, to discover the world, to play games, to collaborate, to create things, to write, to read, and to organize their lives. Nothing can be more foreign to them than school without technology or where technology is relegated to its own special place.” Mobile devices with the power of digital technology are being placed in every student’s hand in schools around the world which equips them with the personal technology needed to learn and communicate in the 21st century. There is a trend at Carmel High School that many, including Sean Bradford, may have noticed. There has been an increasing integration of technology and online services in and outside the classroom. “Today we used the laptops, and our phones in a project, ‘conflicts in different worlds: Darfur (a country)’ ”, says Sean a sophomore at CHS, “we had to use Google Slides to make a slideshow to explain what's happening in Darfur.”

The lack of resources is becoming a major issue in our community as the area continu4es to deteriorate. “Teacher researchers noted that students were more likely to engage in classroom activities when technology was used, however, 47% of teachers responded by asserting their students used technology for less than 80 minutes per day” (Godzicki,144). The lack of home internet, computers, transportation to libraries and other educational centers is challenging. We as educators must be observant that not all students have access to the same tools we have at home, or as some students have currently. We must plan accordingly in order to be fair to all students. An example of this would be if a teacher requires a student to complete a five page research paper. As professionals, we cannot assume that a student will complete this typed essay from home, most children will not tell you this is not possible due to the lack in technology for fear they will be made fun of or put on the spot. Allowing for adequate computer lab time or computer carts is the only way we as a staff can assign such long projects and require the use of expensive technologies that most, do not have at home. Technology in the school system has impacted the students and teachers in many positive ways, including virtual field trips, testing tips, teacher resources, class web sites, and lesson plans. With computer use in our schools, we have access to many different sources and various types of learning.

The education world has been greatly influenced by rapidly changing technology and the increasing availability of information. Schools have advanced by leaps and bounds when it comes to incorporating technology into the learning environment, however, many more advances need to be made. In all areas of the country, educators are trying to help students keep up with technology, but there are more changes that are essential for preparing the next generation for the future.
