Abortion is the process of intentionally ending a pregnancy. Abortion touches the hearts of many because its consequences result in the loss of a human life. Its controversy stems from the fact that people’s opinions on this matter are rooted in their value systems, religious beliefs, and political socialization. Its prominence in political discussions today is likely to continue given the relationship between unwanted pregnancies and overpopulation. There is often debate about the constitutionality of abortion, as it is not specifically addressed by any doctrine. As a result, there has never been an explicit national law enacted.
Abortion is the ending of a pregnancy before birth. An abortion results in the death of the embryo or fetus and may be either spontaneous or induced. For years, abortion has been an extremely controversial subject. The history of abortion reaches back not just decades, but centuries, and even milleniums. Today, policies regarding legal abortion in the U.S. is being debated everywhere. Many myths and misconceptions confuse this issue. A better understanding of the history of abortion in America can help provide a context for an improved policy in the future.
There are many common pregnancy alternatives, but most often the resulting decision is abortion because it is effortless. Abortion is endings a women’s pregnancy by removing or forcing a fetus or embryo from the mother’s womb before it is able to survive on its own. Not all abortions are purposely done some are spontaneous like when a women that has a miscarriage. Abortion is an ethical issue that will be analyzed according to a personal worldview and Christian worldview. In the paper titled “A Defense of Abortion” Judith Thomson uses several premises to bring the readers to the conclusion that Abortion is not morally wrong. After reading her paper I have concluded, that abortion is in fact morally wrong, excluding extenuating circumstances. In this paper I will show that abortion is morally wrong by way of the following argument:
How would you feel if someone took away your ability to live? Imagine not having any say in whether or not you want to have a life. Well babies don't have a choice in their mother’s womb. If a woman decides to abort her baby, they can't do anything about their life being taken away from them. Their whole future is demolished. I believe abortion is wrong when committing it for a selfish reason.
“The U.S. has the highest abortion rate of any western industrialized nation.” (Incidence of Abortion section). Abortion has long been a controversial issue over the years. Throughout the nation lies many known and unknown statistics involving abortion. Many of those who choose abortion do so based upon many similar reasons. There also happen to be many individuals who view abortion in the same manner. The individuals and majority feel abortion to be wrong for a handful of reasons. Each year women decide for a number of reasons to end their pregnancy in the result of an abortion, and although the decision is still commonly viewed as wrong, is there any justification to how it could be accepted?

One of the most controversial topics in America is abortion. In medical terms, “an abortion is the premature exit of the products of conception (the fetus, fetal membranes, and placenta) from the uterus” (Medicine Net). All around the world, the practice of abortions has been widely used to control a woman’s reproduction. The polarizing, emotional debate on abortion has been an ongoing issue that still exists today. People’s different perspectives and opinion on whether or not abortion is immoral continue to divide America into two groups: “Pro-choice” and “Pro-life”. However, pro-life advocates tend to focus more on the fetus rather than how abortion and programs have actually benefited the mother and families. There is hypocrisy in people who identify themselves as “pro-life” and the word itself can be misleading as it does not align with the true values of protecting a life.
Two feminist readings, “Abortion” by Jennifer Saul and “Racism, Birth Control, and Reproductive Rights” by Angela Davis, both cover the important feminist topics of abortion and reproductive rights, but in different ways. Though very alike, the pieces are different in important ways, as they both bring ideas to the table that work in tandem with each other, as I will discuss below. In this paper, I will cover the difference in how these authors approach the subject, how arguments from Saul’s writing strengthens those in Davis’, and how Davis’ essay highlights the importance of intersectionality in feminist discourse.
Dr. Ronnie gave an excellent presentation this past week on abortion and its current laws. We were able to discuss quite a few abortion laws prior to 1952, as well as take a look at some more recent laws. In 2015, Pennsylvania created a bill entitled “HB 1948” which reduced the time frame that a woman could have an abortion from 24 weeks to 20 weeks. Although it didn’t make it past the state senate, it was considered several times. Dr. Ronnie brought up several controversial legislative questions, one of them being, “Does a woman have to be on her deathbed or likely to die to get a legal abortion?” Although the 1967 therapeutic abortion act, signed by Ronald Reagan, said that abortions were only legal if a woman had been made pregnant through
To this day, abortion has become one of the most controversial topics across america. The biggest reason for this is that people override their logical reasoning with their emotions on a regular basis. If a person can surpass their emotions or can remove them from the conversation, the more logical choice becomes so obviously clear. Pro-Choice is the fair choice to all women in America and across the world, considering it is their body and what they choose to do with it is completely up to them. I am of the Pro-Life opinion, but for the purpose of this paper I am a Pro-Choice advocate.
Today’s society is full of health concerns, unsolved, and controversial issues. Many of these can be viewed in relation to one’s moral, ethic, and religious beliefs, thus creating a society divided by opposing viewpoints. Today in the U.S., abortion is one of the most controversial discussions concerning women simply because it has been said for many years now that abortion should not be legal. Many who oppose abortion do not know what an abortion is, or even why a woman might choose to have an abortion. This research essay will discuss why it should be a woman’s choice to have an abortion and attempt to discuss the many reasons behind choosing an abortion.
