Humans have long attempted to create artificial life in the likeness of humanity, whether in legends or real experiments. In recent years, this man-made synthetic humanity has taken the form of artificial intelligence. Currently, no AI system has achieved a fully human-like ability to reason, but with the swift advance of technology in recent years, this ability may soon become a reality. What, then, is to prevent these AIs from becoming earth’s overlords and dominating humanity? For many scientists, philosophers, and engineers, the answer lies in morality. It can be justified that AI can do all the medical work that requires precision, and even jobs that workers are reluctant to do. Artificial intelligence has been a hot topic since the invention of artificial intelligence. Many scientist and humans, in general, believe that artificially intelligent robots would want to rule the world and overthrow the human race. Something as simple as Siri or Corona could get too smart, and eventually, want to get rid of humans. Many sci-fi shows are based on this ideology. However, based off of this article by Tim Oates, artificial intelligence is one problem we should not worry about. In his article, Oates was able to relieve everyone’s anxieties they may have had, and he did so persuasively. Oates used many different rhetoric strategies to do so, but overall he used pathos, sarcasm/irony, and ethos He was persuasive in communicating his argument because of use of pathos, sarcasm/irony, and ethos.
By having the ability to reason, humans can distinguish the difference between right and wrong and know what is good for them and others. An example of morality in the movie “Bicentennial Man” is when Andrew states his famous speech in front of the court. This statement was overloaded with morality messages, Andrew tries to tell us that people are different, that not all marriages need be procreative, that laws should be passed to validate the humanity of some people, that big corporations are bad, and that artificial implants make artificial people. This statement captures the spirit of moral dilemmas of the robot character. It goes several steps further to probe whether a robot with a positronic brain can not only be self aware, but also have a soul, and be worthy of human dignity. This is a courageous story skillfully told. Moreover, freedom is what makes us different from animals. Humans can act with freedom; animals cannot. Because we intend to do certain things, our actions are moral: they are either good or evil; for Andrews actions are intended for “goodness” of one man’s heart.
As seen by the moral dilemma restricting the growth and ubiquity of smart-cars, artificial intelligence has been relegated to being the lesser mind. It is an easily accepted truth that technology has irrevocably shaped humanity and what we, as humans, view our limitations to be. Since the beginning of humanity, people have disputed over the standards of what qualifies as a human being. In ancient Rome, the Romans persecuted and enslaved those of conquered states. In WWII Hitler slaughtered thousands of Jews. In the primary stages of America’s founding, rich white plantation owners imported black slaves to cultivate their fields. All of these types of persecution occurred because a greater, more powerful group considered the other as insubordinate. The commanding power was indifferent to the population they oppressed because they did not consider the subservient group as human. Now that technology is progressing, the definition of humanity is again called into question as the fine lines between humanity and artificial intelligence (AI) have blurred into an area of controversy. Questions such as what characteristics define being human, what is a personal identity, and can AI’s ever be considered human are only a few questions addressed by Mindscan and The Matrix. The disclaimer remains that no superintelligence of this kind exists at present, but, as Bostrom explains, creating one could be disadvantageous to society. If this type of artificial intelligence existed, humans would live in “a false utopia” (Bostrom). The never-ending system of machines would direct civilization toward a world in which all things vital to humans thriving would be eliminated. After years of working toward the invention of AGI, “superintelligence may be the last invention humans ever need to make” (Bostrom). The threat of superintelligence and AGI is, to some, simply a myth or exaggerated, but the reality is that until this field of artificial intelligence is created there will be no telling of its true potential. Therefore, if the risks defined within Bostrom’s writing are at all plausible, the topic and conception of AGI should not be taken lightly and perhaps avoided all together.

Robots can be used for simple tasks like mowing the lawn and vacuuming to advanced tasks like self-driving vehicles. Many of these robots are given artificial intelligence (AI). Development of AI has recently become a major topic among philosophers and engineers. One major concern is the ethics of computers with AI. Robot ethics (roboethics) is an area of study about rules that should be created to ensure that robots behave ethically. Humans are morally obligated to ensure that machines with artificial intelligence behave ethically.

The topic is highly controversial as society must decide whether the production of artificial intelligence be accelerated or delayed. Additionally, how much should the government be involved in regulating artificial intelligence production. Society is already beginning to experience detrimental consequences as production continues to advance beyond control. Technology changes us and causes us to act more selfishly and ignore the harms that come with these advances. This idea is relevant not only in society today, but additionally in the works of The Veldt by Ray Bradbury and The Gernsback Continuum by William Gibson. When it comes to the debate on whether to accelerate or delay the production of artificial intelligence, the potential harms considerably outweigh the benefits, making it advised to be precautious and delay to prevent society from becoming corrupted by new advances in technology.
