In the novel Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen shows that anyone can adapt to their environment and survive. Brian Roberson was flying on a plane in 1987, To go see his father in Alaska for the summer break. The pilot had a heart attack and brian had to crash the plane into a lake in the Canadian woods. Brian was left with clothe on his back and his hatchet that his mother gave to him. This is first shown, that Brian adapted to the environment creating a shelter based on what nature gave him. “ It wasn't very deep, not a cave, but it was smooth and made a perfect roof and he could almost stand in under the ledge. He had to hold his head slightly tipped forward at the front to keep it from hitting die top. Some of the rock that had been scooped out had …show more content…
Brian yells at the skunk, which reacts by spraying him. Blinded for nearly two hours as a result of the spray, Brian runs into the lake to wash himself. The skunk has also eaten the eggs he had stored on the shore. Brian learned two lessons from this incident figures : make a sturdy shelter and put food in a protected place…” I picked this paragraph because brian was very smart in that situation but did adapt to the creatures in his environment. Brian learned a lesson not to keep food out because animals would get to his food. Brian comes to a pile where many eggs lie; a turtle had come up from the water to lay its eggs. Most importantly, it strikes Brian him that the eggs provide him with a more substantial kind of food than he has yet eaten. Thinking of his Uncle Carter, who used to eat raw eggs in the morning, he decides that he needs nourishment badly enough to do so himself. Overcoming the odd taste, Brian eats several eggs and, saving the others, decides to eat one a day. Thinking of the searchers, Brian hopes they will soon rescue him. Brian also adapted here he was brave enough to eat raw eggs from a
The first adversity that Brian had to face was flying the plane when the pilot died. Brian overcame this adversity by remaining calm and remembering what the pilot had taught him about flying the plane. He also had to make up a landing plan for where and how he would land the plane. He wanted to land the plane on a lake.
The first night was rough, mosquitoes clouded around their shelter and made it hard to breathe, but after a while they became immune to the bites and the buzzing. While searching or a sustainable source of food, Brian fell into a canyon that held fish and other underwater creatures. After setting traps and collecting food, Brian and Derek come across a huge tree and a hole in the ground. The tree would provide them protection from the rain that would soon come, and the hole would provide them a shelter to sleep in.
The fire helps Brian survive because it is a guard from the things he encounters. Brian is realizing that he can make a fire from the
This book is written by Gary Paulsen. It takes place in the Canadian wilderness, where Brian Robeson’s, who is 13 yrs. Old, plane crashes. Brian shows a lot of determination and strength, to be able to survive in the wilderness, with no one else.
Brian appreciates the nature so much that he volunteered to go into the wilderness and
is full of interest unlike other survival novels like Robinson Crueso. I was impressed by Brian's inner growth as he struggles to survive in the wilderness. He learned anger and blaming oneself doesn't help anything to be better. Also, he got the ability to think deep and thanking attitude to foods. Unfortunately, the end was so sudden. That's one of my hateful ending-immediate end. That was a miss point of the book. Anyway, in general, I could think of my behavior to emergency with contrasting Brian with
Finally Brian is here, he is now on the top of the foodchain. Some ways that prove that is how Brian Learns how everything in the wilderness has to eat. Also Brian now has a lighter from his survival pack, Brian can now cook food and make a fire wherever he wants. Most importantly he now has a .22 survival rifle. Hunting and self protection is now easier with his gun.The survival pack brought Brian insane amounts of power over the wilderness.
In the book, Hatchet, Brian had to adapt to the wilderness around him. Through this process he changed because he was more aware of how nature was working, how he learned how to hunt through this process, and how he became thinner because his food source was not as abundant. When he was living in the Canadian wilderness, Brian noticed how the fish moved and what shape the foolbirds were. In this way, he was more aware of his surroundings. Brian had to find a way to get food and hunt with the right tools. When he noticed what shape the foolbirds were, he used that to get them for food. He did not get as much food as he did when he was living in civilization. Therefore, his lack in food meant he got thinner and lost 17% of his body weight. Brian
Brian also has to realize that he has a there animals there that will eat him because the are so hungry. I think that brian is no noticing that he needs food and that other animals have to eat to so he has to be safe and
In Hatchet, Brian doesn’t have access to a survival pack because the pack is stuck on the plane down in the lake. But Brian finds a way to start a fire with using his hatchet. Brian then shows that he has the patience to do things that may take a while. In the passage “Survival by the Numbers” it says, “ To that end, your emergency gear should include a waterproof case, a windproof shelter that you can crawl into or crawl under. If you expect to be able to construct a shelter from natural materials as advocated by many outdoor writers you will be sadly disappointed.
Not to say he was always like this but I think he did grow to be like this throughout his time being in the wild. The reason I believe this is because no normal thinking person would just drop everything and leave to live out in the wild. Not to mention he only took a limited number of things. Being alone for that long has to have some sort of affect on a person. Looking back at his younger years in life, the book does mention that he liked to be isolated from people, however, this just had to be too much time. Considering he was also limited on food supply and was in extremely cold weather also play a big part in this. He was starving, alone, and cold. Those things can't have positive effect on someone. A person who was suffering from these things would get up and go home yet Chris was determined to stay and see what the wild had for
Brian was put some really interesting trials in nature and realized things from his past life to help him through it all. Just like when he was depressed and hungry, that food was everything in nature. Chapter 14 staded “ Food is all. Food was simply everything. All things in in the woods from insects to fish to bears, we're always, always looking for food- it was the great, single driven, influence in nature. To eat. All must eat.” This is an important aha moment because he figured out that the main drive for all things in to survive in nature, and that he would have to find food to survive. This also changed things because layer in the novel he used the scraps from the other fish as bait to catch other fish. Also that he can hunt other animals such as the foolbirds,
Brian faced a turning point in his life when he was stranded in a forest, which led to loneliness and hunger. He had to spend nights “alone and hoped”, “they would come today”. This evidence is stated on page 5. Although, Brian hoped he would be rescued, his loneliness makes him question if and when someone would come to the rescue. “I wish you were here, Perpich. I’m hungry and I’d trade everything I have for a hamburger.” This evidence shows that he was really hungry and would trade everything for food. Hunger and loneliness forced Brian to face challenges he wasn’t prepared to deal with.
One way he used this was when he used his ripped windbreaker as a bag to carry things such as berries in. I know this because in the text it states, "He made a carrying pouch of his torn windbreaker and kept picking berries." Also, at first Brian thought his twenty dollar bill was worthless but he used that and his hatchet to make a fire. Lastly in the last chapter Brian thought the emergency transmitter was broken and did not work so he set it aside, but since he left it turned on by accident he was saved. I know this is true because the story says, "He turned the switch back and forth a few times but nothing happened-
After considering all the factors presented in Hatchet, I do not think that I have what it takes to survive alone. Brian Robeson persevered through the challenges presented to him, but I would not be able to do the same. Though this story was well-written and intriguing, I stand by the belief that most people would struggle to
