In the novel Hatchet, by Gary Paulsen shows that anyone can adapt to their environment and survive. Brian Roberson was flying on a plane in 1987, To go see his father in Alaska for the summer break. The pilot had a heart attack and brian had to crash the plane into a lake in the Canadian woods. Brian was left with clothe on his back and his hatchet that his mother gave to him. This is first shown, that Brian adapted to the environment creating a shelter based on what nature gave him. “ It wasn't very deep, not a cave, but it was smooth and made a perfect roof and he could almost stand in under the ledge. Most importantly, it strikes Brian him that the eggs provide him with a more substantial kind of food than he has yet eaten. Thinking of his Uncle Carter, who used to eat raw eggs in the morning, he decides that he needs nourishment badly enough to do so himself. Overcoming the odd taste, Brian eats several eggs and, saving the others, decides to eat one a day. Thinking of the searchers, Brian hopes they will soon rescue him.
