Teens struggle with hardships every day. Although nothing compares to the teens that struggled in the holocaust.“Night” by Elie Wiesel is a tragic story of one teen’s struggle at a concentration camp: Auschwitz. That teen is none other than the author, Elie Wiesel, and throughout the book, Elie changes drastically as a person due to his time in the camp.

In the book Night by Elie Wiesel it says “human suffering anywhere concerns men and women everywhere.” This shows that the world’s problems are everyone’s problems. Everyone has their own responsibilities and when war occurs people tend to take on more responsibility than ever before. The United States is a prime example of making the world’s problems their own.

There are many vices that are taken up exclusively by Humans. Other animals don’t think about wiping out entire races or species just for kicks, most species don’t have the urge to attempt genocide or even turning on their own kin, but humans do. Elie Wiesel was a holocaust survivor whose ghastly year at the Auschwitz death camp was shared with the world by way of his book, “Night.”

Luba Frederick, a holocaust survivor, answered “To die was easy.”, when discussing the tragic and horrible events of the holocaust. In the Nazi concentration camps, life was miserable. Jews were oppressed by Nazi’s and forced to do their dirty work. Families, jobs, dreams, were nothing more than an illusion as cruel and inhumane treatment replaced them. People felt hopeless and looked to death as an option. Many were intrigued with the idea of death, since it was easier to give up rather than choosing to continue. Majority of people stopped eating, gave up their religious faiths and hope, welcoming the darkness to embrace them. Surviving was a constant struggle for these people and the only way to overcome it was the acceptance of death.

In the book Night by Elie Wiesel there are many instances where his use of imagery helps establish tone and purpose. For example Elie Wiesel used fire (sight) to represent just that. The fire helps prove that the tone is serious and mature. In no way did Wiesel try to lighten up the story about the concentration camps or the Nazis. In the book Night written by Elie Wiesel was mainly about how a young boy had to suffer the traumatic experience of existence and fatality at Nazis concentration camps. In the book, Elie Wiesel was the character “Eliezer Wiesel”. Eliezer was a young boy at the age of fourteen who lived in Sighet, Transylvania. During the lead of World War II, Eliezer was an extremely earnest young boy who desired to examine and practice Jewish theology. He also occasionally spent a great deal of time and passion on the Talmud, the gathering of Jewish decrees and ways of life that included the Mishnah and the Gemara. Eliezer’s father, who was a protuberant head of the Jewish neighborhood, strongly believed that Weisel was not of the right age to try and go forward with the doings. Still, Eliezer begins examining and practicing the cabbala with an instructor by the name of Moshe the Beadle.

The phrase, “silence fell again” brings out the lack of voice that the Jews had during this time. They had to stay in the shadows, following every command. Not only does the silence pertain to physically, but emotionally he lacked communication to his God through prayer.

In Auschwitz, death and suffering is rampant, but due to compassionate words and actions from others, Elie is able to withstand these severe living conditions and overcome the risk of death in the unforgiving Auschwitz. As shown through the actions and words of characters in Night, compassion, the sympathetic pity for the suffering or misfortune of others is critical to the human experience because it enables humans to empathize with each other, empathizing which allows us to feel the need to assist others which can often be vital for survival.

Journal Entry 1: There are many assumptions that came to mind when I first saw the book. The images that they title brought to my mind is someplace where there is no light, no happiness.When you think of night you clearly think of physical darkness but I think night symbolizes a place without God’s presence, somewhere where there 's no hope. The emotions that this title brought to my mind is sadness. Sadness because once you are in the dark there is nothing you can do but wait. Wait on your destiny. The impression that the picture on the book gave me was very vague. I was not certain if this book would be a boring book because of the lack of designs or if this book would be a deep, interesting book by the title Night. I have never heard about the author Elie Wiesel, so i was unfamiliar with his work. The fact that this book has been assigned to me, I thought it was going to be boring but now that I seen the physical book and made some assumptions I am very eager to begin reading.

Elie, the main character, changes dramatically because of his experiences in Auschwitz and the struggles he went through at the camp.

There are hard times in life when you will feel like giving up, in some cases you have to find your inner strength and power to survive. Imagine the years 1933-1945 the period of the Holocaust genocide, and being involved in one of the many concentration camps. When faced with extreme hardships or challenges like this, many are somehow able to find the mental and physical strength necessary to endure.

Desmond Tutu once said, “Hope is being able to see that there is light despite all of the darkness” (qtd. in "Desmond Tutu Quotes.") . Yes, despite all the evil Eliezer encountered during his time, he still found hope and a light at the end of the tunnel. He was only the age of fourteen when he was taken from his home by the Germans. Wiesel’s strength shines through in his novel of immorality and opens the eyes of many readers. Elie Wiesel encounters several instances of darkness but also everlasting love throughout his grueling experience with concentration camps and attempted genocide of the Jewish community in his book, Night.

If Winston had this, he would’ve survived. If Elie didn’t, he would’ve died. If Emilia travelled without this, she wouldn’t have made it so far. Hope plays an important role in each of these characters lives, and it is necessary for survival in all three novels. In 1984, George Orwell shows how dangerous hopelessness is through the character of Winston Smith. Elie Wiesel’s novel, Night, explains how important hope is while dealing with dangerous situations. Salt to the Sea, written by Ruta Sepetys, uses a group of World War Two refugees to explain the importance of hope in a hopeless journey.
