From this week’s reading of the Daodejing, as the older contemporary of Confucius, Laozi has some unique philosophical ideas that are different from Confucius. In the Daodejing, Laozi describes the concepts of the universal mother and Yin and Yang. As Laozi emphasizes in the Daodejing, Yin represents feminine and supple, Yang represents masculine and rigid. In Laozi’s opinion, he believes that Yin, in other word, female is the origin of thoughts and valorizes the female over the male. In fact, Laozi repeatedly uses the concepts of “mother” and “children” to illustrate his thoughts in the Daodejing.
