Children and young people often experience many things which have a direct impact on their development; things such as their family environment and structure, personality, hospital visits, childcare arrangements, and culture. Family Environment Of the environmental influences, the family has the most profound impact on child development. Family stability can be described in many ways. Traditionally it is defined in terms family structure (for example, single parenthood, extended families, working families, foster care etc) Exploring the various family processes that pertain to stability may be a useful means of understanding the specific characteristics of family stability that support healthy child development. When parents understand how their child responds to certain situations, they can anticipate issues that might be problematic for their child. They can prepare the child for the situation or in some cases they may avoid a potentially difficult situation altogether. Parents who know how to adapt their parenting approach to the particular temperament of their child can best provide guidance and ensure the successful development of their child's personality. Finally, the third component of personality is character—the set of emotional, cognitive, and behavioural patterns learned from experience that determines how a person thinks, feels, and behaves. A person's character continues to evolve throughout life, although much depends on inborn traits and early experiences. Character is also dependent on a person's moral development. Hospital Visits Having had a child who has experienced several hospital visits and interventions, I know firsthand how these can have an impact on development and in particular Socially, Emotionally and Behaviourally. My daughter was diagnosed at 6 months with Hip Dysplasia (when a child’s hip is not formed correctly). She underwent a simple procedure under aesthetic and was placed in rings splints for several months. At this young age she found the experience
The area a child grows up in has an effect, for example if a child is brought up on a council estate in poor housing they are more likely to have health problems. If parents are not working or have low income jobs they are likely to buy cheaper food and usually this means lower quality which can lead to health problems. Children and their families may have lower expectations. They might settle for the life that id mapped out. If a child lives in high rise flats or appartments they have less oppportunities to play. In poor quality housing there may not be a garden or safe playing area. This is reducing the childs opportunities to develop their physical gross motor skills. This of course is not always the case
Infants usually have a small birth weight; sensitivity to light, noise and touch; poor sucking; slow development; poor sleep-wake cycles; and increased chance of getting an ear infection. Toddlers have poor memory capability; hyperactivity; lack of fear; no sense of boundaries; and they have a need for excessive physical contact. Grade school-years have a short attention span; poor coordination; and difficulty with both fine and gross motor skills. Older children usually have trouble keeping up in school; low self-esteem; and lying, stealing, or antisocial behavior. Teenagers cannot distinguish between public and private behaviors; they have poor impulse control; must be reminded of concepts on a daily basis; and depression and anxiety. Adults need to deal with many daily obstacles; they need appropriate and affordable housing, transportation, employment, and money
Each child and young person will follow an expected pattern of development, focusing mainly the skills they are learning rather than the physical growth. Although when discussed the development of children it focuses on the skills it is undeniable that both skills and growth of children and young people are linked and will impact on the development on the child. Development of children and young people are describe in five different areas; physical, cognitive, communication, social and emotional and moral development.
Every one is an individual and so everyone has individual needs. It is important that as a practitioner that I always take this into consideration and consider the fact that each child will also experience their own personal situations which are unique to them. These unique situations often include social, economical and cultural difficulties and this may delay, stop or help a child advance the development of a child or young person and have an affect on them reaching their full potential. “Many issues in our wider society will
As a parent, it is important to understand a child’s temperament so that an adaptive parenting style can be used. For example, if a child is characterized by a difficult temperament, he or she will be moody and be resistant to new experiences (Shaffer et al., 2010, p.445). For parents, this can be a frustrating situation that results in them becoming “irritable, impatient and punitive” (Shaffer et al., 2010, p.445). Due to the frustration, parents will enforce techniques that negatively impact their child. Therefore, it is important to understand the tendencies and the temperament of a child so that an optimal environment that fosters development can be created. Furthermore, if the temperament of a child is understood an effective punishing and nurturing strategy can be implemented. By doing so, the stresses of parenting can be alleviated as the child will respond positively to the caregiver and the caregiver will not
An individual’s social and psychological development is significantly influenced by early life and childhood experiences. The experiences an individual has as child impacts on the development of social skills, behaviours, morals and values of an individual.
Children’s Development is a social and cultural as well as a biological process. This is important because as societies become not only culturally diverse but also interconnected, psychological theories are required that fully acknowledge the influence of social context, both within & across cultures.
At three months old a baby should be sucking their own fingers, watch their own hands and also look at a body part if it’s being touched. They’re beginning to laugh out loud and smile in response to social stimulation. At this stage, they can be comforted by a familiar adult, and quiet when picked up. They respond positively to touch and interact best when in an alert or inactive but attentive state. They become interested in other people and begin to learn to recognise their primary caregivers. They can see to about 13 inches in front of their face clearly.
Character can be defined as the sum of features and traits that form the individual as a human being. Character is also established by one's actions, habits, and opinions relating to morality. Often in life people struggle with who they really are, and who they are due to others involvement in shaping their personality. We, as humans that make mistakes, tend to lose our ¨role model¨ expectation when taken by surprise. Jeremy Taylor once said, ¨A fair reputation is a plant, delicate in its nature, and by no means rapid in its growth.
The main areas of development consist of physical, social/emotional, and cognitive/academic. Physical development within children consists of changes in body size, proportions, and appearance, functioning of the body systems, perceptual and motor capacities, and physical health. Social/emotional development consists of changes within emotional communication, self-understanding, knowledge about others, interpersonal skills, friendships, interment relationships, and moral reasoning and behavior. Cognitive/academic development consists of changes in the child’s intellectual abilities that include attention, memory, academic and everyday knowledge, problem solving, imagination, creativity, and language.

Child development can be described as the psychological, emotional, and biological changes that occur from birth to the end of adolescence (National Institute of Healthcare, 2016). During child development, the individual develops from dependence to increasing self-sufficiency (National Institute of Healthcare, 2016). Empirical research would suggest that the process of child development is a predictable process that can be measured and influenced by environmental and biological factors (National Institute of Healthcare, 2016). From birth humans experience the world and every aspect of it from temperature, sound, taste, and vision to the feeling of love and affection. While in the
Children’s and young people’s development can be influenced by a lot of different factors such as family and friends, environmental issues such as where they live.
Child development refers to the biological, psychological and emotional developments that occur in human beings from birth to the end of adolescence hood, as these individuals progress from dependency to increasing autonomy. According to Deville (2012) the developments that are vital for a child to achieve are physical, emotional, social, educational and cognitive developments. The development of children is considered vital in today’s world as it is important to understand the development of these areas and how they are related to one another. As a child grows in one area, this will effect and influence the development of another area in the children’s lives. These areas are crucial in development as they focus on the child as a whole. A child’s rate of development is as unique as the child itself meaning that each child develops differently while being influenced by physical, emotional, social, educational and cognitive factors they experience daily. A child's parents are the most important factors in their development
