World War I was caused by several issues between European powers, the first being militarism, or the huge emphasis placed on having large and strong armies and navies. Germany is an example of militarism in WWI because Germany began competing with the British for having the largest navy in the world, as well as developing new weapons like poison gas and submarines, the latter being a great tool in surprise attacks. Militarism was also associated with the Romanticism of war; Europeans wished to fight so that they could become heros. The constant military build ups in several European countries left countries looking for alliances with other strong countries, in the event that war was to break out. Germany, Italy, and Austria created the Triple Alliance and the Triple Entente was comprised of Great Britain, France, and …show more content…
Alliances were a major part of the outbreak of WWI because once the domino fell and two countries began fighting, more and more European powers were dragged into the war because they had to support their
The unconditional support from alliances can be blamed to cause World War I. The nature of the alliances is laid out in the alliance document. The alliances stipulated assistance and contribution of the signing parties in the event of conflict. It can extend from money or logistic sponsorship, similar to the supply of materials or weapons, to military activation and a statement about war. Partnerships might likewise contain currency components, for example, trade agreements, investment or loans. It is best known to cause World War I. In the 19th and early 20th centuries, European nations formed, abolished, or restructured their own alliances. By 1914, the Great Powers of Europe split into two opposing alliance blocs. For quite a long time Europe had been a mixture of ethnic and regional competitions, political interests, contending desires, military dangers, suspicions and disorder. France and England were antiquated foes whose competition ejected into open fighting a few times between the fourteenth and mid nineteenth hundreds of years.
The first underlying cause of WWI was Alliances. The Triple Alliance was made up of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy; while the Triple Entente was made up of U.K., France, and Russia. (Document A) The Triple Alliance is surrounded be the Triple Entente, and The Triple Alliance may have felt threatened and also become suspicious. (Document A) When small battles started breaking out, each country was blaming some other country for disrupting the peace. (Document B). This proves that Alliances were a cause of WWI because The Triple Alliance was surrounded by the
One of the three underlying events that lead to World War I becoming such a big war was alliances. “There were at least 100 countries” according to http://www.history.com fighting a war, and countries had to choose their side. Countries used alliances for extra support. Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy were part of Triple Alliance until 1915 when Italy switched sides hurting Austria-Hungar. On the Triple Entente United Kingdom, and France fought together.
Before the start of WWI, there were two major alliances in Europe. The Triple Alliance with Austria-Hungary, Germany and Italy, and the Triple Entente with France, Russia and Great Britain. These alliance, along with the extreme feelings of nationalism and militarism, were the main causes of the Great War.
France and England created an alliance because they both feared Germany’s naval strength and supremacy. Despite claiming it was defensive in nature, it spread east and eventually, other countries were involved. Since Austria-Hungary and Germany were in dispute over the assassination, they became involved too. Therefore, alliance systems played a significant role in the outbreak of the war. Since these countries. became involved in
World War I, also known as the “Great War” was a global affair that started in Europe. This tragedy began August 1st, 1914 with Germany declaring war on Russia for multiple reasons. The acronym M.A.I.N is used to analyze the war and the four causes for why it happened. M-militarism, which was building a stronger military that was always prepared for war. A-alliances, were agreements between countries to keep peace among the Great Powers. I-imperialism, when nations seek to take over other countries politically, economically, and socially. Last N-nationalism, which is believing people should be loyal to their own country or nation. The top two underlying causes of World War I are alliances and nationalism because of how they effectively impacted
The first of the three main causes of World War One was the alliances between countries. In the years before the war, several European countries had formed alliances with each other to ensure the protection of their own nations. This created two systems; the Triple Alliance, which consisted of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and Italy, and the Triple Entente, which consisted of France, Russia, and Great Britain. The system made it so that if an allied country
After the assassination of archduke Ferdinand, Austria-Hungary declared war on Serbia, which caused Russia to join the war in aid of Serbia because they had a special ethnic tie which both countries had Slavic populations (Doc A). The illustration is significant because countries would have to back each other up in case other countries went to war, leading to a widespread war. Furthermore, the war between Austria-Hungary and Russia introduced Germany, associated with the Triple Alliance Treaty to Austria-Hungary, into the war . Which meant France and Britain, bound by the triple Entente, were also at war with Germany mainly because Germany cuts through Belgium “ Belgium shall form an independent and perpetually neutral state” (Doc B). The evidence suggests that allied countries had to assist colleagues in terms of conflict no matter how the conflict started. Thus, the alliance system lets World War I be a world war because when one country comes to support another, it causes tension for other countries, forcing them to join the mess and that led to a widespread
Because the countries are connected, large wars were inevitable. There were two main alliances in Europe, the Triple Alliance (Germany, Austria-Hungary and Italy) and the Triple Entente (Russia, France and Britain) (Modern world history, “The Alliances” 4). In source 4 (Modern world history, “Source 4” 4), the picture shows the military and naval strength of each country that took part in the war at the time. Germany had the largest army while England had the largest navy. Source 4 shows the scale at which the war had taken place; it also shows that the war was quite balanced between the two sides, which could result in a lot of casualties. Source 6 (Modern world history, “Source 6” 5) is a satirical comic that emphasizes on the changing alliances and how all the countries were so well connected through their alliances that if anything happened, all the countries would get caught up in it. Source 9 (Modern world history, “Source 9” 7) is a comic that shows the strength of the alliances and how a massive war is very easily obtainable. To conclude, Alliances were the main reasons behind the Great War because it connected certain countries in a way that involved them in every conflict. All major European countries had to step in to fight a war that started out as a conflict between Austria-Hungary and

Many historians believe that due to the Wilhelmine Era and the expansion of the German nation, led to the outbreak of World War One. During the Bismarck era, Bismarck 's main goal was to keep France isolated and stay in good relations with Austria and Russia so that it would prevent a war. Although Bismarck 's foreign policy was creating cooperation, it did not last very long. The spark of World War one came from the Wilhelmine era, which turned away from everything Bismarck’s foreign policy represented. The expansion of the military scared Europe, the industrialization of the railroad was a suspicion to other countries, and the expansion of domestic supporters led to the alliance of the France, Britain, and Russia known as the Triple Entente.
“In the last fifty years, the imperialism of all European states has chronologically poisoned international relations” (Doc 5). Due to European imperialism and many countries arguing over what land they wanted tensions were formed between them. So many countries sought alliances for security. The alliances played a big role in the outbreak of war because once one country got into a fight their allies had an obligation to help. (Doc 2) shows a map of Europe and the alliances before WWI. The alliances were split up in two groups, Central Powers and Allies. Some of the countries switched sides when they thought the war was changing courses. The alliance system is important to learn because you can see the domino effect from when one country first entered a war. “The two armed camps alarmed eachother, and each grew heavy with multiplied incidents, which spread East”(Doc 7). This quote proves that the war going to happen at some point. The tensions were already high between France and Germany, so when the Archduke was killed that was just the spark that officially started war. With Britain, Germany, and France colonizing and expanding, tensions began to build between the countries over what land they wanted. All the effects of European Imperialism led to the outbreak of
The alliances of the Central Powers or the Triple Alliance with Austria Hungary, Germany, and Italy. For Serbia, they had the Triple Entente or the Allied Powers of Britain, Russia, and France (Dove Lecture 8/30/2016). The main factor to the start of WWI is the use of alliances. The alliances created a domino effect with other countries joining in on the conflict between Serbia and Austria Hungary. As other countries were committed to helping one another in times of need (Doc. G Political
Peace in Europe was destroyed in the 20th century due to the tensions and mistrust that the most powerful nations in the world felt toward one another. World War I had lasted from 1914 to 1918, with over 10 million soldiers dead. This tragedy started due to three prominent causes: alliances, imperialism, and militarism; out of these, militarism had the most influential impact. To begin, alliances were a major contribution to the development of World War I. The Triple Entente consisted of Russia, France, and Britain, whereas on the opposing side of the war, the Triple Alliance was made up of Italy (who switched sides later), Germany, and Austria-Hungary (Doc. A). These alliances would mean that if one of their allies were at war, then each country had a duty to support one another.
Alliances is one of the few causes that led to World War I. When Franz Ferdinand was assassinated Austria-Hungary blamed the
