In Liam O'Flaherty's story The Sniper, a story about a sniper in the nighttime in a battle against an enemy sniper in Dublin, the author concentrated deeply on dialogue, inner thinking and revealing actions throughout the story to build suspense. In the beginning, the author uses descriptions to build suspense. The evidence is in the first page when the narrator gives the reader a description of what is going on before the story starts. It builds suspense because it lets the reader think of what everything looks like and it gives a little background of what is going on so far.

Such cultural products surround people with images that contribute to the shaping the way they understand different groups of people. Consequently, how facts are portrayed shape our insight of others and negatively impact our opinion and view of a group of people. According to Elbih, the concept of portrayal or representation has the capability to imply that certain media expose, repeatedly, particular situations, stories and images (112). The result of this representation makes the culture appear familiar or natural. One example of the popular culture in the U.S.A is in The American Sniper; a film in which the portrayal and the consequential conflation of Muslims communities were outlined in a manner that they are seen to be the threat to the United States of America (American Sniper). Therefore, The American Sniper demonstrates a very harmful representation of the Muslim populations concealed behind hypnotizing panoramas of the American patriotism. Thus, the focus of this essay will be how The American Sniper portrays negative stereotypes of the Muslim religion as violent while representing a positive stereotype of other religions in America.

American Sniper is a 2014 American biographical war film directed by Clint Eastwood and written by Jason Hall. It is loosely based on the memoir American Sniper: The Autobiography of the Most Lethal Sniper in U.S. Military History by Chris Kyle. The film follows the life of Kyle, who became the deadliest marksman in U.S. military history with 255 kills from four tours in the Iraq War, 160 of which were officially confirmed by the Department of Defense. Although Clint Eastwood had Kyle’s autobiography to reference to, Eastwood still made up events that didn’t really happen but, on the other hand, there were some events that he matched perfectly.

SNC however, seemed to spend too much time providing extra minute details that the team behind them were already getting close to assaulting their objective. Once SNC finally finished his brief and got them in formation to move, he then shot his compass azimuth and started out on foot. After a short distance, his team took “sniper fire” and suffered a casualty. SNC continued to have his team assault through the “sniper” even after being informed that the sniper had “retreated.” SNC then put his team into a 360-degree defense and started getting his ACE report. Once he had the information, SNC tried to give the ACE report to the evaluator.

The plot was intended to show the real life story of how Chris’s journey to become a Navy SEAL, and one of the best snipers in history. The movie starts off with Kyle’s relationship with his dad and their hunting adventure. Next, it shows Kyle pursuing his dream to be a cowboy and living the cowboy lifestyle of a small country house and going out drinking. The movie continues on all the way through his training and events of being a sniper. The plot was aimed to inform us on what America’s greatest soldier had to overcome to get the respect they deserve. Kyle was not known to many until the movie was released and gave everyone a more appreciative outlook on the lives and freedom we have today.
