Military Appearance In this paper I will discuss the importance of why a NCO or Drill Sergeant should maintain proper military appearance and why it is important. The NCO’s Creed first states that “no one is more professional than I”, so I am sure that means more than just appearance. It is a statement that includes mannerism, attitude, professionalism etc. It also says that NCOs are the backbone of the Army, which will also tell you that we serve a critical role. Even though I respect the entire creed, the statement that most stands out to me is” All soldiers are entitled to outstanding leadership; I will provide that leadership. I know my soldiers and I will always place their needs above my own”. Although Drill Sergeants have …show more content…
Obviously body odor is also a must. While it is not presentable to wash down in aftershaves or colognes, it is also offensive to smell bad. One thing to always keep in mind is, a first impression is a lasting impression, whether it’s military life or civilian life. People often decide whether or not they like you and will do business with you within the first ten seconds of the first encounter. Image may not be everything, but it does speak volumes about your organization’s values, work ethics, and professionalism. Therefore, if you appear to be a dirt bag then it is very possible that your superiors, peers, or subordinates will label you even though they do not really know the real you. You may work as hard as possible to improve your first impression, but if you get that label on you, regardless of how hard you work, the positive work you do may not be recognized. On the other hand, everything you do that is negative is pointed out. For example, you may have completed nine out of ten tasks above or at expectation level, but the one thing you do wrong is the one that could ruin your reputation and label you. For this reason, our actions and appearance that others may form may have a lasting effect that form an unfavorable impression of you that may never overcome. The sad thing about first impression is that you do not get a second chance to make a first impression. As a new recruit, we teach them importance of your
We, as NCOs, have the responsibility to develop, prepare, and train our Soldiers for the challenge of an ever-changing operational environment.
In this essay I will describe the many requirements and expectations set forth in the army's AR670-1. I will describe the importance of obedience to it and cite many of it's detailed descriptions. I am writing this essay because I failed to meet the standards asked of me me by both these regulations, and my leadership. I accept the responsibility of my actions and will not let my failure recur, nor will I let my fellow soldiers repeat my mistake. Since my failure was in regards to grooming or personal additions to uniform, I thought it would be pertinent to cover these subjects most thoroughly, If any additional information is required of me I will add on to this.
In my essay I will research on the Military Uniform and Appearance. I will also research on the AR 670-1.This will help me understand and value more the importance of the uniform that I ware and it will be helpful in future reference in my military career. In my essay I will do some comparison from our military appearance and uniforms from other types of jobs that also use uniforms and have different standards that sets us apart from the everyday use of a regular uniform.
A soldier is expected to represent the military at all times, including being courteous, confident, and enthusiastic. A soldier’s job is hazardous, sometime even life and death, the military needs only the best in its ranks, so a soldier expected to behave as a professional at all times. How the public sees a single soldier does affect how all soldiers are viewed in the public’s eye; this includes their physical appearance. When all of the elements are combined and implemented the soldier will have a strong military and professional bearing that the country expects of its soldiers. Military and professional bearing is how a soldier behaves, dresses, and carries themselves inside and outside of the uniform.
It is being known that clothes make a man or a woman and by all means, this is a true statement regarding the United States military. Soldier’s uniforms symbolize everything from branch, rank, position, loyalty, and prestigious. The image of a sharp outfit creates a psychological, moral booster and spirit de corps of Soldiers. As a general rule, Soldiers are identified by their uniforms. Each uniform has multiple components that have a legacy and a history behind. Although Soldiers have pride in wearing the United States Army Uniform, a few of them don’t know the origin and purpose of each part of the uniform. Every part has its purpose, and it was strategically made based on the necessities in the battlefield.
The US Army itself is a uniformed service where discipiline is judged and by the manner in which a solider wears his or her uniform aswell as by the individuals personal appearance. Therefore a neat and well groomed appearance by all soliders. What do NCO's have to do with this? An NCO contributes to building pride and morale essential aswell as keeping people in regulation and doing things disciplined and orderly. This meaning an NCO
The Army as a Profession of Arms is a statement of truth and a concept to adopt. Soldiers generally characterize themselves by their specialty and not the ability to use lethal force. The classification of Soldiers own core purpose is what must shift within the Army culture. Army leaders must train and prepare Soldiers to successfully meet the challenges they will face as the Army pursues the campaign of Profession of Arms. The Army Values embody the core foundations of the skills needed for success; Soldiers at all levels must strive hard to live and model these values. Soldiers are shown pride in their organizations and the Army as a whole by the artifacts that are displayed on the walls and in cases at the units in which they serve.
what is the importance of uniformity ,dress right dress, and discipline in the army? the importance of uniformity is to make everyone become and look equal. there are no differences between us, no separation because we are all a team. what is the point of uniformity, when a whole platoon is uniformed it shows discipline and being in uniform is one of the things that is part of the foundation of the army. Without uniformity there cannot be discipline, and then it turns into a chain reaction and destroying the foundation of the army. being in uniformity shows soldiers how they can do things together and how working together, we as people can do anything we want to accomplish. it also teaches soldiers that uniformity also shows
Commissioned Officers are the stewards of the military profession. They are the problem solvers, managers, and planners who lead Enlisted Soldiers in all situations. Officers are trusted with the welfare, morale, and professional development of the Soldiers under their command. Indicative of that trust, the Army grants Officership to only the most qualified, talented men and women. Transitioning from a Non-commissioned Officer to a Commissioned Officer demands an understanding of these new responsibilities. My personal and professional backgrounds have influenced my understanding of the responsibilities of a Commissioned Officer. Specifically, as Commissioned Officers we must be skilled in communication, ensure the welfare of those under our
For a Soldier to become an expert and encompass the values of a professional, they must have a role model who was able to instill these attributes for them early in their career to become a well-rounded individual and Soldier to mold future generation of Soldiers. Junior Soldiers take after what they see and how they are treated by their junior and senior Non-Commissioned Officer’s (NCO’s), and if they are exposed to great leadership, mentorship and discipline there is a significant chance of them exuding the same values to their junior Soldiers when they become NCO’s and assume the responsibility that comes with the rank.
Professionalism, Stewardship, and Maintaining a Professional Appearance Professionalism is a vital character trait when it comes to being a Soldier in the United States Army. Professionalism is composed of several key characteristics when it comes to the definition of the word itself, which is “the skill, good judgement, and polite behavior that is expected from a person who is trained to do a job well,” according to the Merriam-Webster dictionary. In the Army, it is expected for all soldiers to be able to competently achieve the most basic standards of self-discipline in order to display a professional appearance at all times. Professionalism breaks down into several categories which add up to what is known as the “whole Soldier concept.”
In the army there are many uniforms a soldier has to wear. This is for the different activities a soldier does. For everything from their daily Physical Training (PT), their regular working uniform Army Combat Uniform (ACU), or their dress uniform either the Army Service Uniform (ASU), or the Army Green Service Uniform (Class A). Each uniform is design to fit a specific task and to be worn a in certain way. A great resource for either the ASU or the Class A is the “U.S. ARMY UNIFORM GUIDE.” I found this little book a great resource because it shows every form of the ASU for both males and females soldiers, for officers and enlisted. I found this to be great because it shows where everything goes, and how to measure everything, and for a
It is impossible to form a perspective on how Army uniform polices relates to Army professionalism without first accepting that Army professionalism itself is an arbitrary concept. On 31st March 2014, the United States Army published new uniform and appearance standards in Army Regulation 670-1 and immediately faced a mixture of vehement resentment and patriotic acceptance. The cause for the differing reactions is the fact that not everyone concerned—everyone being active and retired Soldiers as well as interested citizens—believe that the written regulations accurately defines what it means to be an Army professional. Some are offended that the Army would loosen it standards during times of war to fill up it ranks but after the fighting is done suddenly decide these brave individuals are no longer worthy of its institution. Still others are ecstatic the Army is returning to older rules because they are personally disgusted with the standards of the “rag tag force” that’s now assembled, including its wear and appearance of the Army uniform (Bacon, 2012). These two passionate opposing views demand an answer from the collective Army consciousness. What defines the Army professional and how do the new uniform policies fit within that definition?
5. This position paper advocated for the standardization of camo military uniforms. It discussed the recent timeline of changes to service specific uniforms and the costs associated, potential effects on morale across the services, and the overall positive outcome that standardization will make when considering DoD
The US Air Force’s mission to fly, fight, and win in air, space, and cyberspace is accomplished by over 300,000 enlisted and commissioned personnel enforcing and upholding all rules and regulations set by the Air Force Instruction and Uniform Code of Military Justice. From the way we dress to the way we perform in our jobs, on-duty or off-duty, on-base or off-base; everything is part of the whole picture.
