Cell phones should be allowed in school because they can further students ability to learn and/or stay focused. Audrey Watters wrote, “And that’s probably one of the most important observations: Many students already carry a powerful computing device in their pockets, while oftentimes much of the technology hardware at schools is woefully out-of-date.” This is a major reason why cell phones should be allowed in school because in some schools that do not have the most updated technology there students do on their phones. By allowing cell phones in school, students have access to these powerful devices that can be utilized for free while increasing classroom resources. Higgins wrote, “The issue of security and red alerts on terrorism threats became an issue, and school systems began to relax the prohibition on cellphones in schools.” Schools are relaxing the harsh ban, and understanding the benefits of cell phones in school. The issues of security and red alerts are a threat, and are becoming an issue in the school systems which make this a valid reason. While cell phones do not prevent the threats, they do allow for help faster. This is a valid reason because cell phones in school can save lives. They can prevent more people from being injured during a school shooting and they can be used as a way to get help when there are no other ways of doing so. Cell phones are distracting in school and disrupt learning. Students should always be giving their teacher their undivided attention. Cell phones in school create problems and they affect students’ grades. Although some may claim these reasons to be true, they are undeniably wrong. The proponents of cell phones should not be allowed in school argue, “We know for a fact that the use of cell phones on school property around the country has led to a number of problems around safety.” This is wrong because cell phone use on school grounds is only beneficial to individuals on and off school property. Cell phones do not necessarily prevent problems, but they do help in times of emergencies. They promote safety in situations such as school shootings or hostage situations. The proponents of cell phones should not be allowed in school also argue “Student’s whose minds wander during a lecture or discussion may find the temptation of texting instead of listening hard to resist.” While this is true, it is up to the student to pay attention. However, texting instead of listening is the same as doodling and not listening, or playing on a school issued laptop even after being told to put it away.
