Academic integrity constitutes of an overall honesty in one’s work when presenting information to another person or, in this case, a professor for a written assignment. Dishonesty, especially in education, is not new. Nowadays it is easier for students to copy and paste their work off others on the web. However, technology has improved to identify when one is cheating with sites such as Turnitin or other online plagiarism checkers. These online checkers are available for free for students to copy and paste their work into the provided text box in order to check the authenticity of their writing. There are several types of plagiarism; non-cited sources, cited sources, intentional and self-plagiarism. In non-cited sources, one takes another’s work and turns it in exactly how it is, paraphrases different sources and puts them on one paper, paraphrases one source entirely or turns in an exact copy of their own work from a different class (Hamdan, 2012). In cited sources, one may cite correctly, but not include them in references, cited sources are not given with enough information to be a legitimate source or all writing is straight paraphrasing without original works incorporated (Hamdan, 2012). In intentional plagiarism, one knowingly plagiarizes or plagiarizes on purpose. Plagiarism hurts us all, first, by hurting the original author, then by hurting the one that plagiarized. It is unfair to steal from the original author, who has spent a large amount of time writing the paper, book or article that someone else claims as their own. In the end, the one who plagiarized will also be affected, whether it be a failing grade or withdrawal from the course or institution. Academic integrity benefits us all by being honest to ourselves as well as others. Honesty in writing or any other work benefits one’s own principles. Plagiarists can learn how to accurately cite used material by going over formatting sites online, in text or can even use a plagiarism checker to see their progress. In “A case of Plagiarism,” it is explained that plagiarists should admit their dishonesty, use plagiarism checkers and put themselves in to the other persons shoes (Grif, 2014).
