Zoos may seem fun to visit and exciting to see the animals; but what you don’t see is the suffering and depression that lies in these helpless creatures. There are many arguments whether or not zoos are good or bad, and if they should be removed or kept. Several think that zoos should be abolished or at least very much improved, due to animal cruelty. While, others want zoos to stay because it is beneficial for the animals and people. I strongly believe that zoos aren’t good for both the public and animals for numerous reasons.

There have been a lot of problems with animals in zoos. It has gotten to the point where zoos are hated and looked upon as a places of animal torture. Are zoos really that bad? Turns out, they are. They do not have enough space, they do not allow the animals to communicate with each other, and they sell the animals to cruel circuses.

Most people go to zoos with the expectation of a happy family and enjoying a day staring at wild animals that we do not see very often except of a screen. They see zoos as a place to experience something different and to take their children to. However, few people know of the mistreatment and unfit conditions the animals are forced into. When I was a little girl, I was always eager to have a day out to the zoo where I could get up close with hundreds of beautiful animals. I heard many interesting stories of animal life and how hard they have to fight in wild life to survive. Zoo, under my eyes, was a wonderful land where animals were rescued and taken care off in a safe beautiful place. It was much more fun when I figured out animal could do many interesting things as human did as monkey could drive bicycle, and dolphin can dance in the water. However, with the development of media, many truths have been revealed, and zoo is not simply as wonderful as I thought. Monkeys were not born to drive bicycle; dolphins do not naturally dance in the water. They all have to go through severe process of training to do trick and entertain for human. Then, it becomes even more complicated to make up mind what are the real effects of zoos on animal and human. It is definitely a valuable source for public studying. Many zoos were established as a new home for endangered animal. However, it is undeniable that many zoos have taken away animal freedom, as well as torture them for the purpose of entertainment and commercial.

Animals need to be in their natural habitat, instead they are in an area too small and not the same. Animals are more likely to get diseases spread from other animals. By being in captivity it can cause animals physical and emotional distress. Animals should not be kept in zoos because animals deserve to be in their natural habitat away from physical and emotional stress of zoo life. Many of the non endangered animals are capable of living in the wild by themselves, but the more time they spend in zoos the more they will forget about how to survive in the wild and they will also gain many other negative effects. Zoos are more harmful than helpful because they restrict animals to enclosed habitats, they weaken the animals primal instincts, and they cause the animals stress which lead to mental and physical health issues.

Zoos can lead animals to be weaker once released into the wild. Because the animal’s environments are small and confined, they can’t hunt or use their instincts like they would in the wild. This especially harms the animal children because they end up raised in the organized and planned environment, so they are almost unable to hunt. Although some zoos don’t treat their animals this way, the majority of zoos do and it can harm their population in the wild.

Some zookeepers abuse animals. In one British zoo, the carcasses of slaughtered animals, including baboons and endangered deer, were left to rot beside bins.” Sometimes even animals abuse each other. Slate.com says that, “Tom, a gorilla… was moved hundreds of miles away because he was a good genetic match for another zoo’s gorilla. At the new zoo, he was abused by the other gorillas and lost a third of his body weight. Eventually, he was sent back home, only to be sent to another zoo again once he was nursed back to health. When his zookeepers visited him at his new zoo, he ran toward them sobbing and crying, following them until visitors complained that the zookeepers were “hogging the gorilla.” Animals also don't get enough room in the zoos. Many animals travel and need large territories such as lions, elephants, zebras, gazelles, and many more.
