Abortion is a highly debated topic over pro-life or pro-choice being right or wrong. Abortion is the deliberate termination of a human pregnancy, most often performed during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. It is a medical procedure used to end a pregnancy and cause the death of a fetus.

Abortions were widely practiced before the 1800s by which most states had banned abortions unless it was to save a woman’s life. However, starting in the year of 1973 they started legalizing abortions which caused a lot of debate throughout the United States, whether abortions were constitutional or not. Since then, abortions are one of the many things that everyone has a different opinion on.

Throughout the history of the world there is nearly four thousand years of abortion history, which we find that from the earliest times this issue has been less about abortion and more about life - its value and its sanctity. Abortion and contraception were lawful at the time of this country 's founding, and then criminalized, state by state, in the mid- to late-nineteenth century. The evolution of abortion in the American Legal system has had many controversial elements since the late 1800’s. In the beginning of American Juris Prudence, abortion was illegal. The landmark case Roe v. Wade (1973) paved the way for a woman to have the right to choose to have an abortion. Since the Roe case, there has been landmark cases and legislation that determine how easy or hard for a woman to have an abortion. Abortion in the American Legal system is a long and winding road that never seems to stop. No one can predict what the future will bring. All we can do is base our findings on the case law and legislation that exists today.

Dr. Ronnie gave an excellent presentation this past week on abortion and its current laws. We were able to discuss quite a few abortion laws prior to 1952, as well as take a look at some more recent laws. In 2015, Pennsylvania created a bill entitled “HB 1948” which reduced the time frame that a woman could have an abortion from 24 weeks to 20 weeks. The morally permissibility of abortion should depend on the circumstances. For example, in the case of a woman having an unwanted pregnancy by force, I believe then abortion is morally permissible. However, if it was planned pregnancy, I think the woman has an obligation to give birth to the child.
