Essay Abortion: Pro-Life vs. Pro-Choice

Abortion has been a heated debate in the United States for decades. Since before the ruling on Roe v. Wade, it is clear that this is an issue that is far from ever being decided upon. Between those who are pro-life and those who are pro-choice, scholars from both sides work on disproving the morality of the other side. With the evolution of abortion laws and regulation through the decades, it is difficult to imagine the United States without conflict pertaining to abortion. Despite pro-life and pro-choice agendas, the country is in ever-changing opinion when it comes to abortion.

Abortion, the termination of pregnancy before the fetus is capable of independent life, has been practiced since ancient times. With records dating to 1550 BC, it’s no question that abortion techniques have been used throughout the ages as an effective form of birth control. Pregnancies were terminated through a number of methods, including the use of herbs, sharpened instruments, the application of abdominal pressure, and other techniques. In the 19th century, the English Parliament and the American state legislatures prohibited induced abortion to protect women from surgical procedures that were deemed unsafe. The controversy surrounding abortion has been long debated since the Roe v Wade case (1973) as pro-life advocates and pro-choice advocates go neck to neck on whether the process should be banned or remain legal. According to APA (American Psychological Association), abortion is the “medical or surgical termination of a pregnancy and is one of the oldest, most common and most controversial medical procedures”. To be Pro-Life means to be against the termination of a fetus; one who is not in favor of the practice. Pro-life advocates believe a woman should continue the pregnancy and deliver the baby no matter the circumstance. Pro-choice represents those who believe the woman deserves a choice to carry the baby or have an abortion. Although the 1973 Roe vs Wade case legalized abortion, abortion is still currently a much heated debate in America as the surgical procedure is possibly on the verge of becoming illegalized. However, abortion should definitely remain legal for various reasons such as individual freedom, victim protection, life opportunities, failed contraception, and it is not fair for the government to make such crucial decisions for a woman’s life.

Abortion is one of the most controversial issues in America that is centered between advocates that are pro-choice and pro-life. Intentional miscarriages occur when a women induces the termination of a human during pregnancy, the procedure happens during the first 28 weeks of pregnancy. Pro-life and pro-choice advocates differ in many of their opinions, over the years the government has been trying to deal with the problem/issue, and now there are possible solutions to the issue.

A whopping fifty seven million babies are aborted each year. Fifty seven million valuable lives. The definition of abortion is the loss of a fetus before it is able to live outside of the womb. I am Pro-Life. All fetuses have the right to life and it should not be taken from them. In contrast, people who are Pro-Choice may beg to differ.

If you don 't know whether a body is alive or dead, you would never bury it.” That was just one quote said by Ronald Reagan on the topic of abortion. He also said, “I 've noticed that everyone who is for abortion has already been born.” Many people, like Reagan once was, are against abortion and believe that it is morally and ethically wrong. Likewise, many people, including Alan Dershowitz, support it. Alan has said, “I can 't find anything in the Constitution that says you prefer the life of the mother, or the convenience of the mother if it 's an abortion by choice, over the potential life of the fetus. Look, I think women, if they 're required to not have abortions, could die and could - so I favor a woman 's right to choose.” Abortion has been an extremely controversial topic since the 1960s, and has grown into an even more controversial and sensitive topic as the decades went by. There are two main sides to the argument on abortion: pro-life and pro-choice. People who are pro-life, such as myself, are against abortion, and their argument mainly defends the unborn baby. People who are pro-choice support abortion, and their argument is solely based on the physical, mental, and economic well being of the mother. Abortion is the termination of the fetus within 28 weeks of becoming pregnant. There are two main viewpoints discussed throughout America on this topic which is pro-life or pro-choice. Pro-life is the encouragement of human life, of, the fetus, so anti-abortion. Pro-choice is a United States social political faction supporting the right that women should get to choose between aborting the child or not. Abortion is a controversial issue that countless individuals in the pro-life and pro-choice community have a powerful divergent opinion concerning the matter. Abortion is not morally ethical because it is the murder of an unborn fetus.

I want to do my iSearch on the political side of abortion and the Pro-Choice vs. Pro-Life movements. Even though I know where I stand, I want want to learn about both sides because I think it will benefit me in truly understanding the topic. I chose this topic because I feel strongly about the a woman’s right to choose. I think every woman should get to make their own decision when it comes to abortion, and no man should make the decision for them. I think this issue is very important because of everything going on in our country now. I hope to find out where our countries leaders stand on this issue and what the future holds for rights around abortion. I can read articles on the Planned Parenthood website and Prochoiceamerica.org. I can watch videos of politicians talk about the issue as well as women talk about the issue at protests around the world. I can read about the Roe v. Wade case as well as other cases. I can read books that are listed on studentsforlife.org, which is a site that offers credible books on both sides of the abortion issue. I can interview someone who is currently working at Planned Parenthood or I can interview my cousin who had an internship at Planned Parenthood recently.

Man was born with an inalienable aspect of choice and it is with this aspect that the person will die holding to, indeed, at individual levels people have even the choice between living and death and can decided to end their lives even without informing anyone about it.

The Supreme Court ruled that abortion be legal and available to all women. Legal abortions can be performed up until the sixteenth week of pregnancy, after sixteen weeks most doctors or clinics will not perform the procedure unless keeping the baby presents a medical risk to the mother. Even in these situations abortions are very risky after sixteen weeks.

There are over 80 thousand maternal deaths that occur almost every year because of unsafe abortions.

Those who take the position of pro-life in the abortion debate do so because they believe that a child in the womb has the same basic human rights as a child outside of the womb. Pro-choice activists will say that a women’s right to control her own body circonseeds the bundle of cells growing in her uterus. From this position we must ask ourselves, where does human life start? When does a fetus become a baby. Religious members of society will say that it starts at conception. While others say it starts at the baby's first heartbeat at twelve weeks or when the baby can feel at twenty four weeks. I tend to lean more towards the side of pro-life and it's not a right vs left reason that I believe this. It's it's the process and consequence of abortion that leads me to think this way and why I believe more young women should be educated about what abortion is.

Abortion continues to persist as one of the most controversial topics talked about today. One usually takes the title of pro-life or pro-choice which represents either side of the controversy. People who consider themselves pro-life believe abortion is equal to murder. They say abortion kills the fetus which will soon become a human. Most of the discussion comes forth here. Pro-choice believe one should have the choice to terminate their fetus. They also say the fetus has not yet formed into a living baby so it is morally accepted by them to murder the fetus. Abortion should not remain a choice just because one made a mistake or the baby would remind them of a painful time in their life.
