Abortion should be illegal in the United States of America. Since abortion was made legal in 1973, almost 57 million babies have been murdered by abortion. At the rate of 2,900 babies aborted a day, or 1,058,500 a year, the death toll is averaging almost double the deaths caused by the “leading cause of death” in the U.S., heart disease. These are 57 million people, who could've grown up to cure cancer, or found a reliable and abundant clean source of energy. Also, women who have had abortions almost always are psychologically affected in some form or another. The Oxford Dictionary defines abortion as the expulsion of a fetus, naturally or especially by medical induction, from the womb before it is able to survive independently, especially in the first 28 weeks of a human pregnancy. Today many argue whether abortion should be legal in the United States. Some show religious views while others show civic views. The basis of such a debate should be on medical information. In modern society, many women that have an unintended pregnancy and they result to abortion without researching other options. The procedure used for abortion is not only harmful to the baby obviously, but it can be dangerous for the mother both physically and mentally. Many of the risks of abortion include bleeding, infection, damage to organs, and sometimes even death but it is very rare (considering abortion). It is healthier for the woman to have birth than going through this dangerous procedure, and if the mother is not ready or does not want the baby, she can give it up for adoption. It is only fair to the baby to at least give it life to live with a family who adopts it than no life at all. After the abortion is over, women think that they are going to feel relieved to finally get this over with. For most women, this is not the case. After going through the procedure and seeing the baby get removed from their body, they almost always feel immediate regret. Seeing a dead baby the size of the palm of the doctor’s hand catches mothers off guard and traumatizes them and it should. Studies show that most women wish that they had known more about abortion before they got one (considering abortion). So, even though there are physical risks to abortion, the mental risks are the most harmful.

Abortion, for the vast majority of people is not a subject that is easy to talk about. According to the World Health Organization, out of the 211 million pregnancies, 46 million end up in abortion and 18 million of those abortions are done in what WHO considers unsafe conditions (World Health Report, 2007). Unsafe conditions are defined by WHO as, “ abortions performed by people lacking the necessary skills or in an environment lacking the minimal medical standards, or both” (World Health Report, 2007). The maternal death rate for women who have unsafe abortions is 350 out of 100,000, and there are other complications that are not fatal but can lead to disease or disability (World Health Report, 2007).

My second argument against abortion is due to the physical health issues having an abortion can cause for women. There are minor complications such as: minor infections, bleeding, fevers, abdominal pain, gastro disturbances, and vomiting that can occur as a result of having an abortion. Approximately 10% of women undergoing induced abortion suffer from immediate complications, of which one-fifth (2%) were considered major. Major complications that occur include: major infections, excessive bleeding, embolism, perforation of the uterus, anesthesia complications, convulsions, hemorrhage, cervical injury and endotoxic shock. Aside from the potential dangers of the abortion methods in general, abortion increases a woman’s chances of having miscarriages in later pregnancies; this is especially true for younger girls who have had an abortion. Also, repeated abortions increase the level of danger (Thiroux and Krasemann). I personally know several women who have had an abortion at some point. Believe it or not, women were not always entitled to abortion. Until 1973, when it became legalized, women would terminate their pregnancies through dangerous methods. Some included back alley abortions or at home procedures. Unfortunately, most of these ended in complete disaster, leaving women injured or needing medical attention. Since abortion was an unsafe option overall, it seems that women would stop fighting for the cause, but despite the potential peril they continued their fight. The idea that abortion creates emotional scars and is a risk to women's health, is what troubles many young adults considering it.

Abortion is the ending of a human pregnancy. Most women choose to have an abortion because they think that they are not ready to be a mother. They think the best way to get rid of their baby is the best way to get rid of their unborn child, but there are always other choices. Just because something is legal, it doesn't make it right to do. Abortion should be illegal, because: it is the same as killing someone, it's better to give a baby up for adoption instead of taking his/her life, the baby is innocent and is not responsible for others actions, and due to the fact that most females regret having an abortion and require psychological help afterwards.

There are two arguments regarding the ethical issue of abortion, pro-choice and pro-life. The pro-life position believes the sanctity of human life begins at the point of conception and therefore abortion is akin to murder. This is due to the fact that society does not allow one human to intentionally harm or take the life of another even an unborn child. Furthermore, there are negative consequences as a result of an abortion, as medical complications can occur later in life, as well as intense psychological pain and stress. Statistics show that abortion is a choice made mostly by young women whom many are minors, with insufficient life experience to understand the consequences of their actions. Women all over the world have used abortion as an alternative to having the baby in every known society, in any point in history, regardless of its legality. The reason and decision to have an abortion is never easy. Pro-Life advocates may argue that a fetus can feel pain and it is inhumane. In reality, a newly fertilized embryo cannot physically feel pain up until at least 14 weeks. People claim there are other options including adoption. But in reality, we already have enough unwanted children in this world so why bring in thousands of more children as a result of abortions being illegal? And the what about the care for the mother?

Abortion is one of the most controversial subjects that has been continually argued over for many years all over the world that poses the questions death or life. The killing a human life is a contradiction to the norms of society, from a biblical point of view, one will believe that abortion is wrong because it is a sin that is stated in Exodus 20:13, the sixth commandment of the law of God "Thou shall not kill", and such an act should be outright illegal. Although abortion may seem to be the only correct solution for an unwanted pregnancy, it is cruel, unethical, and presents a double-standard for society; therefore, it should be considered illegal except under some special cases and medical circumstances that indicate a danger to the mother and child.

“There are nearly 1.2 million abortions performed in the United States each year” (Operation Rescue, 2014). That was 1.2 million innocent lives that were ended before they even had a chance to begin. Abortion has been legal for decades now, and it is time to put a stop to all the murdering of unborn children. This senseless killing of an unborn child needs to be recognized for what it truly is, and that is legalized murder. Abortions should be made illegal in the United States because it is taking the life of an innocent person, there are other options out there and lastly abortions are not only harming the unborn child but also cause harm to the mother.
