Abortion has been a heated debate in the United States for decades. Since before the ruling on Roe v. Wade, it is clear that this is an issue that is far from ever being decided upon. Between those who are pro-life and those who are pro-choice, scholars from both sides work on disproving the morality of the other side. With the evolution of abortion laws and regulation through the decades, it is difficult to imagine the United States without conflict pertaining to abortion. Despite pro-life and pro-choice agendas, the country is in ever-changing opinion when it comes to abortion.

Nowadays, in this world, there are a lot of problems that can make tremendous conflicts for human beings. They are very complicated and bring a lot of argument and nobody knows what the exact answer is. They also have pros and cons. One of the most complex problems is abortion. This is due to moral and ethical values which we all have. The majority of us are Christians or are brought up in that kind of ambiance which means that as small children we were taught values that are based on the bible such as that famous phrase “Thou shall not kill”. This phrase relates to this topic because an abortion is the murder of a human being.

Abortion has been around for quite some time. Laws have been set allowing it and banning it during different periods of time. The procedures that can be done are all very different. There is a medical abortion involving drugs and there are surgical abortion involving a more invasive procedure. There are also different points of view on it. There are those who fully support the termination of a pregnancy and those who are completely against it. There are many factors to consider and very different ideas out there.

Abortion has been a complex social issue in the United States ever since restrictive abortion laws began to appear in the 1820s. By 1965, abortions had been outlawed in the U.S., although they continued illegally; about one million abortions per year were estimated to have occurred in the 1960s. (Krannich 366) Ultimately, in the 1973 Supreme Court case of Roe v. Wade, it was ruled that women had the right to privacy and could make an individual choice on whether or not to have an abortion during the first trimester of pregnancy. (Yishai 213)

To be pregnant under the age of 18 is a controversial issue. As minor, she may choose to give up the child. As a minor, she may choose to give the child up for adoption, keep the child, or undergo an abortion. Many are opposed to the latter option, which is the early termination of a pregnancy. The root of this issue began with the Supreme Court’s decision on the legality of an abortion in Roe v. Wade and has stemmed into a debate of pro-choice or pro-life. The decision led to the polarization of the public, since the conservatives were against abortion being a constitutionally protected right. Pregnant women should have control over their body, and yet through case law conservatives are able to pass restrictions on when the abortion procedure would be done (Henretta, J. A., Hinderaker, E., Edwards, R., & Self, R. O., 2014).

Pro-life versus pro-choice has always been a controversial issue due to religious reasons and our countries constitutional rights. The woman’s right to have a say on her pregnancy has slowly progressed throughout our countries history, while only allowing women the right to make their own choice on whether or not to keep their unborn child within the past 50 years. “The 1973 Roe v. Wade decision guaranteed a woman 's right to an abortion,” states Judith S. Baughman, editor of American Decades. However, this was not always the case and still causes controversy among many people living in America due to religious reasons.

Many people throughout history have fought to have the choice to have an abortion if they like. For example cases such as: Roe v. Wade and Parenthood v. Casey, which made a big impact in the system.

In the United States there are more than a billion abortions performed each year. Since the court case Roe vs Wade in 1973 more than 56 million babies have been murdered in the United States before they had the chance to take their first breath (Snyder, Michael). These statics along with many more show the huge injustice that is happening in the country I call home.

He also said, “I 've noticed that everyone who is for abortion has already been born.” Many people, like Reagan once was, are against abortion and believe that it is morally and ethically wrong. Likewise, many people, including Alan Dershowitz, support it. Alan has said, “I can 't find anything in the Constitution that says you prefer the life of the mother, or the convenience of the mother if it 's an abortion by choice, over the potential life of the fetus. Look, I think women, if they 're required to not have abortions, could die and could - so I favor a woman 's right to choose.” Abortion has been an extremely controversial topic since the 1960s, and has grown into an even more controversial and sensitive topic as the decades went by. There are two main sides to the argument on abortion: pro-life and pro-choice. People who are pro-life, such as myself, are against abortion, and their argument mainly defends the unborn baby. People who are pro-choice support abortion, and their argument is solely based on the physical, mental, and economic well being of the mother. One of the lessons that stood out the most to me was the one about abortion. This is not just an issue that affects women but this issue affects men as well. A couple of decades ago when abortion was illegal, thousands of woman died for attempting to terminate the child’s life themselves or with unprofessional help. On January 22, 1973, in the Roe v. Wade case, Supreme Court legalized abortion in all 50 states. This has saved thousands of woman’s lives and should remain legal.
