“Frindle” by Andrew Clements illustrated by Brian Selznick
Nick Allen is a child full of ideas who decides to replace the word “pen” with the word “frindle” after his teacher has told him that words are formed by the people making them, therefore he must try it out for himself and gets six of his friends to commit to using the word “frindle” instead of pen.
Nick and his friends made a big show about using the new word every time they needed to say pen, however Mrs. Granger, the fifth grade, language arts teacher was not in favor of the use of the word and asked them not to use it. The white envelope included the note that was from way back in the beginning of the conflict when he put his name on it. It said she knew or was rooting for it to become a word, moreover congratulating him for making it in the dictionary. She also apologized for trying to hold him back and now could see the benefit of the event happening in her classroom. Inside the white envelope also came a box with Mrs. Granger’s favorite fountain pen, it had a small note attached saying “frindle” on it. Then he did something special, he gave Mrs. Granger a gold pen with this inscription “This object belongs to Mrs. Lorelei Granger, and she may call it any name she chooses-With love from Nicholas Allen” The event of the story is factual in that it could happen and it is also social in the way that Nick was able to get the word started. Getting his friends together and agree to use the word “frindle” instead of pen continually. The author permits freedom by giving the children something to act on that doesn’t harm anyone. It also allows for an older person or one in authority to have the freedom to express the need for respect, yet still show support for the act of progress. The author has demonstrated the dynamics of the classroom between child and teacher showing the struggles of a student who enjoys trying out new ideas. The only thing controversial is Nick’s use of his new word in class which led to his teacher feeling disrespected after

This article is pretty neat for the simple fact that I never thought of a pencil in this aspect before. The pencil has had a profound effect in our society and civilization as a whole. The main points that the author is trying to make is that only boys and girls who can read and write uses the pencil, the pencil is taken for granted, and that the pencil can teach anyone a lesson if he or she wants to learn.
Victor Rios starts of the book by giving a brief background of his own life and what he experienced as a child in the ghettos of Oakland, California and the events that caused him to turn from his old way of life. During the span of Victor Rios’ juvenile years he decide to join and become a gang member Rios states “I joined the gang seeking protection that I thought police and other authority figures in the community had failed to provide”(Rios ix) Rios’ quote is the most commonly known reason why youth in urban areas seek out membership in gangs which is a lack of protection and involvement from police and authoritative figures in bettering these communities. Along with his membership he partook in deviant acts and so on. Rios talks about this boy he knew that went by the name “smiley” that would hang around the gang a lot. Before “Smiley” was initiated to the gang Rios notes how Smiley would tell him stories of how teachers would treat him punitively meaning that they were aiming to punish him based on his prior actions and his color. Rios mentioned “Smiley” as being a naïve boy, he suffered physical abuse from his parents along with that his parents often kicked him out as a punishment for questioning them and informing them about the negative ways his teachers went about treating him. Soon after “Smiley” was initiated into the gang, Rios states that they became best friends and had a sense of looking

In Outliers, Gladwell attempts to answer, What makes some people successful while others cannot seem to realize their full potential? In U.S. society, people are considered successful when they have traits and characteristics: self-sacrifice, intelligence, talent. However, He says that the conditions and circumstances surrounding our lives are the significant influential factors that determine our success, not our inner ability or talent. These talents and abilities allow these people to be separate from society.
Generally there are two types of people in the world, the virtuous or the opposite, malicious. Malicious people tend to be evil and awful. Someone evil is harmful and marked with anger or irritability. Evil people are more prone to avoid friendships due to their selfishness. Evil or awful people tend to be self-centered and liars. They may cause harm physically as well as mentally. A virtuous or great person is someone who tends to be high moraled and replyable. This kind of person tends to have a lot of friends or be popular. John Knowles’s book, A Separate Piece, expresses these types of people. A Separate Piece is a flashback of an older boy returning to his school, Devon. The older boy’s name was Gene Forrester. He discussed his most memorable and awful moments. The author revealed Gene’s personality by how he treated his friends. Gene was academically inclined. He worked really hard to maintain his good grades. Finny, Gene’s friend and roommate, is the total opposite. Unlike Gene, Finny was an athlete and didn’t have to work hard for his skills. It came to him naturally. Finny was a good person, on the other hand, Gene was an evil person.

The things we do as children are often irresponsible and reckless. Yet we do them for fun, and because others are watching, judging, and expecting us to fulfill our 'friendly,' peer-pressure driven responsibilities. There are times, however, when these things lead to something bad, something unexpected. During such times, it is difficult to get over what once was, and to go on with life, especially if the said occurrence is a tragedy, which often times, it may be. Such an event happened in the story "Samuel" by Grace Paley, where a boy died because of his and his friends' reckless behavior, but also because of the actions of the individuals surrounding these boys. This paper will thus analyze the story, in order to determine who was responsible, in this case, for the tragedy that occurs in the story.
Jill Nelson Per:2 10/5/17 Poetry Analysis To an Empty Page by Robert Pack is an echo poem that accentuates darkness through the subconscious mind of the author. The second voice, or the echo voice in the poem dictates what the first voice will say next, displaying internal conflicts in oneself that is prevalent through the whole poem. The echo in the poem only responds to the first voice with powerful one-word commands which determines the next question the first voice is going to ask next.
