Irony in literature adds a certain depth and poignancy which makes reading fiction so engaging. In addition to supplying wordplay and humor, it sometimes plays an integral role in the tone and outcome of a story. Irony is not to be interchangeable with sarcasm, although verbal irony typically employs a sarcastic voice for its message. Sarcasm by definition in Perrine’s Literature as “...language one uses to belittle or ridicule another” (Arp 359). Verbal irony is quite different in its definition. Verbal irony, the easiest form to identify, varies slightly. This form simply means that the speaker’s intent differs from what he or she says. The other two forms of irony are dramatic irony and situational irony.

William Shakespeare wrote the play A Midsummer's Night’s Dream over four hundred years ago. There are three types of irony, dramatic irony, verbal irony, and situational irony. Verbal irony is is when the speaker says the opposite of what they mean. Dramatic irony is when the audience knows more than the character. And situational irony is the opposite of what you think is going to happen happens.

There are good examples of verbal and situational irony in Elsie Wiesel's memoir Night. Verbal irony occurs when words are used to suggest the opposite of what is meant. It is grimly ironic when, after the Jews are ordered to wear yellow stars, Elise’s father says, "The yellow star? Oh well, what of it? You don't die of it..." The statement is ironic because that is precisely how Elise’s father died. The wearing of the yellow star was one step on the path to the concentration camps and almost certain death. After almost a year in the camps, Elise’s father dies from dysentery at Buchenwald.

Sarah and her “gang:” all thought he disappeared. The audience knows what is going on, but the characters did not. Jim also uses situational irony- the irony where something happened that the audience and the characters don't expect it. One of the situations when this is used is in the beginning there are fairies, we all expected them to be nice and sweet, but instead they bit Sarah's finger. Later in the movie, Sarah found herself in a junkyard in the labyrinth, she found an exact replica of her house. Her house fell apart while she was in there. The audience and the characters did not expect that. The last example is at the very end where all the characters good or bad, were “partying” with Sarah at the end of the movie.
