Generally speaking, Gothic literature is associated with a general focus on the emotional and not the rational, fascination with the sublime, magical eccentric inexplicable phenomena, or rejection of reason. Creating a terrifying and suspenseful new take on Gothic horror. When discussing Magical Realism, you take an ordinary story of everyday life, but it adds some slightly magical, almost believable exaggerations and escapism to add fantasy tones. Although, these stories have different point of views, both stories use similar settings, characters, and how they handle fear/supernatural. In setting, Edgar Allan Poe's "The Fall of the House of Usher," and Julio Cortazar's "House Taken Over," share times usually set in the past. The siblings live in a house passed down by great-grandparents, their parents, and so on through their whole childhood (Cortazar 37). Letting them be in a tranced in the past, until, the house is taken over. While Poe's have a definite setting, enhancing the story, in a quote said "singularly dreary tract of country," may set back in the past when trying to reach the House of Usher (Poe 13). Also, characters in both neither wanted to seek marriage or any type of life of their own leaving them with a mundane lifestyle. In "House Taken Over," the siblings repeat everything day after day. They both wake up at seven in the morning and clean the house, with plenty of extra time to spare they knit, read, or organize stamps (Cortazar 38). In "The Fall of the

Gothic style invokes a very dark, scary, and irrational feeling, even though the explanation is completely natural. Magical Realism like the piece “House Taken Over”, makes things seems normal but has events that seem almost unexplainable. In Gothic style writings like “The Fall of The House of Usher”, things seem unreasonable, but in Magical Realism things feel ordinary.

In the story “Where is Here” a stranger appears at the family's house and the family reacted with curiosity and concern(69). Edgar Allan Poe’s “Fall of The House of Usher” the narrator conveys “Nevertheless, in the mansion of gloom, I now proposed to myself a sojourn of some weeks”(14). In this quotation from the story, the author says “mansion” indicating the house that his friend Roderick lives in, is huge. Furthermore, in “House Taken Over” by Julio Cotazar, the author notes “Irene and I got used to staying in the house by ourselves, which was crazy, eight people could have lived in the place and not have gotten in each other's way”(38) .Therefore, a conclusion can be made that the house, Irene and her brother live in is very big and has an enormous amount of room for a huge group of people even though just two live in it. Each story is told with just two characters who live in an enormous house, causing the story to sound strange, creepy, and somewhat lonely feeling considering two people usually, would not need such big of a house. Gothic literature is a style of writing that includes a bleak, dark setting, tortured characters, strange plot, striking description and a gloomy mood. Elements such as these are found in all gothic literature tales. “Fall of the House of Usher”, by Edgar Allan Poe, is a good example of this writing style. This is due to the countless dramatic and strange descriptions. Poe is the designated father of gothic literature. An example of a dramatic description of this story is when the narrator is explaining the demise of the Usher’s legacy and their mansion. “There was a long tumultuous shouting sound like the voice of a thousand waters-”. (Page 30, Paragraph 48) This dramatic explanation gave more of an impactful description, rather than saying the house simply fell and was no longer there.
Supernatural elements is something that cannot be explained by the laws of nature. These elements, such as religious figures and activities, ghosts, witches and anthropomorphized animals have been used to develop themes throughout literature. These supernatural elements are often used to outline the conflict within the plot and creates an atmosphere of mystery and suspense throughout the text, which establishes the gothic. Supernatural components leave us to question what is real and what is our imagination.

When that happened Hayden’s brother had caught Hayden’s arm and helped Hayden up because if Hayden had fallen, Hayden was most likely going to die. Although they both have different developments in their respected stories, they bring a couple similarities. The author of The Fall of the House of Usher is Edgar Allan Poe, a very recognize magazine editor, poet, short story writer, critic and lecturer. In contrast to The Fall of the House of Usher, A Rose for Emily’s author is William Faulkner. William Faulkner earned his popularity by writing novels. They both had a similarity in the way they wrote. The similarity could be seen in their way of expressing each and every detail. The feeling when people is reading these two short stories is like if they are living it while they read it.

Gothic tales are loved by most readers as we all get a thrill from the fear that is represented in these tales. The suspense and mystery make us want to dive deeper into the story till we become part of the story ourselves. Setting on the edge of our seats waiting to see what happens next. In the two stories that are being compared will do just that. The Fall of the House of Usher leaves so much to the imagination making the story even more enticing wanting to see why this gothic tale is titled as it is. The Old Nurses Story has it all, murder, ghosts, love, deceit and revenge. These two stories deal with the forces of good against evil and the supernatural. There were terrible unforgiving crimes committed in both tales. One was burying someone alive and the other was a double murder of a Daughter and granddaughter. In Poe's story it really does not come right out tell you why Rodrick is in the state he is in with his illness that is no other than fear. The Old Nurses Story leads you on a for a while as to why Miss.Furnvall is so stony and cold and depressed but soon tells why and both ends in death from fear and regret. Both Gaskell and Poe have their own style of being creative, but both keeps you wanting more till the end.
