A Christmas Carol
After reading A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens I would not help but associate this story with how I envision the Realism period. I have learned, through my research, that authors during the Realism period often wrote about struggles that resulted directly revolutions of the period. My initial thoughts on this story were that the author wanted to use Scrooge to symbolize greediness of people during the Christmas season and the negative direction that the world had taken. I feel as if the author is seeing many people forgetting to true meaning of Christmas and the why they celebrate it in the first place. There are several aspects of this story that interest me greatly, but the main reason is that it is still relevant today. Even now in the 21st century people are filled with greed and gluttony especially during the Christmas season. When first reading this story my thoughts were that "A Christmas Carol" was just that, a story about Christmas. Twenty-two film adaptations dating from 1901 to 2012 goes to show the impact it has had on our culture. After finding out that it had historical relevance outside of being a popular piece of literature my interest grew greatly. Charles Dickens wrote A Christmas Carol during the Realism period, which is very apparent with the tone in which the author depicts. During this time period there were several shifts in the economy throughout the United States and Europe. Several revolutions took place during the Realist period - the most memorable being the Industrial Revolution. The Industrial Revolution was a time in which the economy of the United States really took a swing towards more technological advances, and shifted away from agriculture. Although this period had many economic, and monetary benefits there was much social suffering caused by the advances in technology. Due to the desire for rapid advancement in technology, workers were often overworked and underpaid. This really heightened "social classes", and lead to a lot of depression, and feelings of sadness, which I originally felt this poem exemplifies. After reading the author's biography it is very easy to see why
Christmas is one of the most magical times of the year, for me, and the many stage and film versions of Dickens’ masterpiece offer many opportunities to experience the joy and revelation of A Christmas Carol. Pick from Alastair Sims version, Patrick Stewart, Bill Murray’s Scrooged, The Muppets and the 3-D masterpiece with Jim Carrey, just to name a few. It’s safe to say it is a very popular show done an infinite number of different ways. That is why as a director I would create a contemporary staging of A Christmas Carol in New York City. Now, at first glance this may seem unoriginal, but for me it is a perfect setting to honor the story in its original form.
“I am not the man I once was…” (Dickens 675) might be the most famous words of Ebenezer Scrooge in “A Christmas Carol” Written by Charles Dickens. Ebenezer Scrooge is a horrible man who is haunted by three spirits overnight in hopes to make a new man out of the old miser. Throughout this story, Ebenezer Scrooge is haunted by three spirits ,Christmas present, past, and future, and during this time he learns about his greed, what joy he missed on christmas, and that he had a chance to become better.
Charles wrote A Christmas Carol in 1843. This short novel has a Christmas theme and has been popular since it was first published. This moral story is about an old man called Scrooge who hates Christmas and is mean to everyone, but he is transformed. The lessons he learns are as much for the reader to benefit from as Scrooge.
In Charles Dickens film and novel A Christmas Carol, he shows his feeling of capitalism and how it affects societal wellness and individuals. The setting of the story is in Victorian England where Ebenezer Scrooge, the main protagonist, lives and dwells. In this time period in England many are poor and few are rich; the economic state of the city is in poor health. Scrooge is one of the scare rich individuals in the land and practices capitalism to a T. Dickens shows how his story is related to economics by using the setting of the story and also the capitalistic ideals of Ebenezer Scrooge.
Some of these may be very scary and some may only be mildly scary. It
Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol was first published in London on the 19th of December 1843, the novella was instantly popular and still is to this day. Dickens inspiration for the short story seems to come from his childhood experiences and his sympathy for the poor. In the story a miserable old man, Ebenezer Scrooge, is shown the error of his ways and what will come of it if he doesn’t make drastic changes. Various ghosts and spirits slowly transform him into a kinder more pleasant man. A Christmas Carol is a powerful novella that uses symbolism like the children Ignorance and Want, Scrooge’s transformation, and Scrooges nephew Fred, to reinforce significant themes like social isolation, rebirth, and family.
A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens is a compelling tale of greed, love and charity. Studying this short novel at school is necessary because it concedes the threats of holding and leading a selfish life and how acting greedy is notorious on your fate and your perspective of life. Through his representation of Scrooge, Dickens wants the reader to learn from his miserable personality and encourages others
'A Christmas Carol' by Charles Dickens allow readers to be positioned to identify what he values in society and his beliefs of the consequences in life and in Christianity as shown through Scrooge's transformation. Scrooge was a coldhearted and frosty man who has been given a second chance in life to alter his view towards Christmas, and most importantly, the happiness in the world by becoming charitable, and positive while maintaining self respect and value. Through the teachings from the Spirits of Christmas Past, Present, and Yet to Come, Dickens demonstrates a defiant and isolated character who transforms into a changed man imbued with Christmas
A Christmas carol by Charles Dickens is a significant novella written in the Victorian era. The protagonist Ebenezer Scrooge is used to demonstrate the upper class society and their attitude towards the poor. Throughout this redemption story, Dickens combines a descriptions of hardships faced by the poor with a heart-felt sentimental celebration of the Christmas season. The novella contains a dramatic and comic element as well as a deep felt moral theme. The text promotes the values of Ebenezer Scrooge, delving into his past, present and supposed future as well as contrasting between the enriching and depressing story; specifically
The novels A Christmas Carol, by Charles Dickens, and Wuthering Heights, by Emily Bronte display a strong parallel in the ways in which they use their different styles of narration in the story to reveal the true inner-feelings of characters. In A Christmas Carol, the main character, Ebenezer Scrooge, is taught many valuable lessons through the testament of three different spirits, each working to bring out the true emotions of this man. Likewise, in Wuthering Heights, the main character, Mr. Lockwood, is taught stories of his landlord, Mr. Heathcliff, through written recollections from the testaments of others, showing the inner-feelings and thoughts of him through diary entries. Although they are written in two different styles, indirect

A morality play, not unlike some of the popular plays I have seen. I think we all have seen this familiar theme many times over the years. As we head into the Christmas season, where reflective thinking becomes this very theme. I can compare this play with some of these seasonal plays. The play that comes to my mind immediately is, "A Christmas Carol" by Charles Dickens.
Dickens’ ‘A Christmas Carol’ presents a warning to society through the representation of characters and the journey and transformation of the notorious miser, Ebenezer Scrooge. Dickens warns society of the grim future that awaits humanity if people fail to respond to the plight of the poor. Finally, if Dickens intentions weren’t made clear enough through these examples, his preface says it all. “I have endeavoured in this ghostly little book, to raise the ghost of an idea…May it haunt their houses pleasantly, and
The movie “A Christmas Carol” is better than the book. The book is a very descriptive christmas novel. The movie shows more feeling than the book did. The setting and lighting has set a better mood overall than the book.this is why the movie is better than the book.
“ Spirit, hear me. I am not he man I was. I will not be the man I have been for so many years. Why show me all of this if I am past all hope? Assure me that I yet may change these shadows you have shown me. Let the boy live! I will honor Christmas in my heart and try to keep it all the year. I will live in the Past, the Present, and the Future. The spirits of all three shall strive within me. I will not shut out the lessons that they teach.” (Scrooge, p.140). A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens is an important story as it has a meaningful theme of change, as the quotes states above. But that isn’t the only theme that this beautiful story shows us. Many different spirits encounter him to help him realize why Christmas is important (I’m pretty sure that is the meaning of the spirits). When the first spirit of the past encounters him, he realizes what he has done, and regrets some of the things he did. The second spirit helped Ebenezer Scrooge recognize how what he has been doing has had an impact in other peoples life. When the frightening third spirit came and showed him his future and others futures, he discovers about himself and how people didn’t care that he died. When we read A Christmas Carol, we learn that it can have many different themes that can be a very important component to the story and even our lives.
