In the field of Medical Administrative Assistant, there is a multitude of career choices to branch off into. Of these many fields, the three that I choose to discuss are Medical Billing, Medical Coding and Medical Assistant. All three careers are of high demand in the medical industry and each requires the need of basic classes, with a couple of varied courses, depending on the field. Basic requirements for all include a high school diploma or GED. Most require an Associates degree, consisting of specific major courses and general liberal arts courses. A Medical Assistants job depends on which state you work in and the type of place you work in. This job can be very easy but it has a lot of responsibilities such as keeping the office organized also work with patients in the exam room. Some of the responsibilities/Tasks are to answer the phone when someone calls about a medical issue and schedule them an appointment, record, update and fill out medical information on the forms, they also have to greet the patients and answer any questions they might have. Also they have to communicate with the physician and the patient, manage bills and bookkeeping. Also they have to fill out and complete the patients’ insurance forms and arrange the hospital admission and/or lab procedures for the patients.

The reason why I want to be a medical assistant is very dear and personal to me. First, my mother is a type I diabetic. Growing up, I recall her having many issues with her glucose levels being elevated. I assisted by giving her insulin shots and helping her check her blood sugar regularly. She’s now on an insulin pump and is facing a pancreas transplant if her medicine fails to help. Next, my Grandma Scherer suffered from diabetes. I always attempted to be of aid when her glucose dropped by keeping sweets nearby. After her kidneys failed in 2005, she went on dialysis. Consequently, she succumbed to diabetes in August of 2007. Also, there was my dear Grandpa McKee. He endured renal failure and diabetes. Witnessing him suffer in the hospital

After high school I plan to attend college and major in biology or environmental science. I’m undecided on whether I want to go on to become a doctor or a physician assistant. However, I intend to use my career as either a doctor or a physician assistant to serve underdeveloped areas both nationally and internationally. I’d also like to get involved with organizations that involve promoting health and education.

As the educational requirements has changed over time there are a few basic step that have to be accomplished first. Anyone who’s trying to enter this field must with hold a high school diploma. Also have to take courses in english, biology, anatomy, physiology, medical terminology, computer, and fundamental math. The first is two organizations a certified medical assistant (CMA) designated to the american association of medical assistants (AAMA) and a registered medical assistant (RMA) designated to the american medical technologist (AMT). A medical assistant can be considered to be a “jack of all trades” in the medical field (Xu, 2013). This profession is expected to grow 31% by 2020 (Xu, 2013). After learning about all the job duties of a medical assistant it is clear to see the importance in becoming certified. Some important reasons in becoming a nationally credentialed medical assistant is, having more job responsibilities and being able to provide more services to the patients, becoming certified also lets the future employer know the seriousness a person has in field of medical assistant, better pay rate, most importantly an employer will look at the credentials and consider that person to be less of a legal liability (Balasa, 2009).

It is quite amazing and interesting to learn how others utilize the health science degree and utilize it for advancing the career. Bachelor’s degree in health science can absolutely be a backbone of your current role as a medical assistant. The additional opportunities will certainly be available as you already have the medical assistant experiences. During a four month span of living in Jordan and studying first hand; the health response for Syrian refugees, my vision and goal of becoming a physician assistant evolved and transformed into a new profound passion. This experience has opened my perspection on the scope of practice of a physician assistant. I realized how paramount policy making affects management of communicable and noncommunicable diseases and how this aspect is commonly forgotten about. This was observed as I conducted independent research on stroke prevention in Jordan. After collecting and analyzing the data, I concluded that due to the lack of policy and guidelines on preventative medicine, practitioners were not being held accountable and not incorporating preventative techniques into their practice. This research has taught me that as a future physician assistant, preventive medicine is a key aspect in my scope of practice and without the integration of policy on preventative medicine, non-communicable diseases cannot be systematically regulated and surveillanced. Collectively, this experience has left me eager and excited to implement my gained insight upon returning to the U.S and becoming a future integral member of a health care team.

The more experience and the continuing education that the person has the more doors may open for the person to work for in other areas. When it comes to medical billing and coding medical assistant have to be able to ask patients about making payments on their accounts and with known hesitations as medical assistants we are responsible for charging the patient on the date of service. When medical assistant collects it will increase the flow cash in the office. Medical assistants and medical billers and coders are responsible for handling charge sheets and submitting them to the insurance companies for reimbursement.

The medical administrative assistant class we touch on Insurance authorizations, medications, pre-authorizations/ops tasks, which may be touched on in the Legal and Ethical class. These are difficult areas to teach hands-on because every organization is different (Smith, Wynant and Talbott).

Now days I believe it is essential for people to have good computer skills and knowledge. Including all computer software’s like Word, Excel and Power Point. I am mainly interested in working as a medical office administrator. Office administrators are responsible for all information management and organizing medical records. Excel can be used to keep track of medications, prescriptions, payments and many other health information. Because of this I believe anyone seeking a career in medical office administration should really take excel as part of their curriculum.
