After conducting five interviews, I found some similarities and differences on their views of what sociology is. I interviewed two females and three males. The ages from the interviewee’s ranged from 19 to 56. All of my respondent’s in this research were white. The five respondents had a different socioeconomic status. One of the respondents is still in school, and does not work at the moment, so I listed her as a low socioeconomic class. I interviewed both of my parents, and they are at a middle class standing. Also, I interviewed my girlfriend’s mom and dad, and they are also at a middle class standing, while her mom got her BA, and is a nurse. Both my girlfriend and her parents are Republican’s, while my parent’s are Democrats. The first question I asked in these interviews was, “ What the discipline of sociology is, and what they expect when they enroll in an Introduction to Sociology class.” The majority of my respondents did not know what the discipline of sociology meant. Except for one respondent said “ The discipline of sociology can range from criminology, politics, and philosophy.” To the second part of the first question, the answers were all the same. All of my respondents went on to say, the basics of sociology, study human behavior, the interactions of people from, different races, gender and different socioeconomic class. On the next question, about what sociologist study, I received common answers from my respondents. All the respondent’s answers was,
Chapter 1 explains how the sociologists focus on social forces such as religion, education, politic, race, class, and gender in the society that might be influence people’s behaviors. For instance, most people is believed that people are poor because they are not working and that wealth is the reward for who are working hard. However, the sociologists look at other factors that might cause the poverty in the society. How can we define the poverty? Is it because people don’t have enough money, food, or shelter? When are people feel satisfy with what they have? Karl Marx explains the class conflict theory in which the bourgeoisie controls the means of production and wealth while the proletariat works for the bourgeoisie. The social class caused
Sociology is the study of groups of people and how society interacts with them. There are many people out there that have done research or contributed in some way to sociology. Not just on people, but things like religions, countries, genders, race, and many more. Many things play in the role to form us and our society. Here in America, we have Trump as our president and we eat burgers and french fries, but over in japan they grow lots of their own food and eat it like potatoes with vegetables and chicken. Different things happen around the world and we just can’t seem to think there is other things out there than what we just do or what we call ourselves and so forth. We don’t think about how our society affects us and how we affect society.
According to Durkheim, Social fact or social phenomenon are the main subject matter of sociology. He said in one of his pieces that social fact must be studied distinct from the biological and psychological phenomenon. Social order is the trend of behavior being used to exercise power over another person. It has become rules and regulations that have been set up by some authorities to be obeyed by another group of people who are being undermined in a society, it is a situation that oppressed people and limits them from their liberties. When people go through these situations they cannot function the way they are supposed to function because they are limited by their freedom. These social orders are not only laws but rather certain norms created by the authority to put a whole race into a situation where they are very far from freedom of speech, movement, and knowledge. African Americans are an example of a race that has been through discrimination at workplaces, schools, community etc. They are one race which has been a label or put in a class where the situation will never permit you to climb the ladder of success. Although you might have all the certification, qualification, the best schools, etc. but the fact that you came from the poor class or the lower class, it becomes very difficult for the Caucasian people to give you the opportunity you deserve, because of this, the citizens of American have been grouped into different classes which are upper, middle, working,
Sociology is a social science that studies human societies, their reactions, and the processes that preserve and change them. Sociology also studies social status or stratification social movements, and social change, as well as societal disorder in the form of crime, deviance, and revolution. Its attention is mostly going to the collective aspects of human behavior. There are and have been a discipline in which there is a body of ideas that all accept are valid. It is about our own lives, our own behavior and is therefore complex and difficult to study. The practice of sociology involves the ability to think imaginatively and to detach oneself from any preconceived ideas about social life. It can also increase self-understanding and influence our own futures from what we learn. Sociology embraces a variety of theoretical views. The disagreement between theoretical viewpoints can occasionally be quite radical and these differences can occasionally produce complex issues die to the problem of subjecting our own behavior to study.
In Chapter 3, sociology students learn about culture. One section in the chapter mentions norms and taboos. A norm basically sets restrictions on what society should and should not do. A taboo is an action that society prohibits because it insults their culture. Throughout the world, different cultures practice different norms and taboos.
It used to be my assumption that Sociology was the same as philosophy, as in questioning things such as “what is reality,” and so forth. However, it has more meaning and science behind it. Later on in life, I began to realize that who I am was not just an innate destiny or result, but had much more to do with what was happening around me. In addition, in my Technology and Society class I came to realize even more how sociological influences play a significant part in our identities.
Much research on helping behaviour can be criticised as being ethnocentric, conducted in the USA alone. Thus, the studies are rather limited in terms of the lack of variety in the people studied. Latane and Darley were the first to systematically investigate the circumstances under which bystander's are/are not likely to intervene to help others, and promote pro-social behaviour. However, we must be cautious not to generalise the findings to other cultures. We cannot assume that the same circumstances apply equally to any human population.
Sociology has a big impact in society. At 21 years old, I am considered a minority in society but never really felt that way because of how my parents raised me and where they raised me. I was raised in Fremont I never really knew that being Mexican had a small price in America because of racism and being a women means double the work to be considered equal in my career. Many people may consider my master status as being a women but to me it’s being a mom. I have experienced many ups and downs in society whether it be with symbolic interactionism where people stereotype me or on the Social Class where I keep moving up and down in social class. Culture, Resocialization, Sex and Gender, and Social Class are just a few topics I’ve been able to
A wide range of people all over the world inaccurately come to the conclusion that sociology is merely, ‘the study of the obvious’ and the application of common sense, this statement could not be further from the truth. Common sense derives from statements such as, ‘opposites attract’, however the Sociological sense takes this belief and carries out numerous tests to discover whether it is fact, or fiction.

Charon (2010) reiterates that humans exist in three realities, which is a physical objective reality, social reality, and a unique. The third reality, a unique, is a product of social reality. It is a private interpretation of the reality that is shown to a person by others. An individual is understood through a society and society through an individual. As individuals we do not draw meaning from objects hence our tendency to act towards things on the basis of meaning attached to them.
Max, if you are reading this I would you to know that your Intro to Sociology course was by far my favorite class of the semester. You should know that I’m not saying that it was my favorite just so I can get some extra points added to my grade. I’m being completely honest, I really did enjoy your lectures. There were times during the semester when I would wake up and say to myself “Max doesn’t check attendance maybe I should not go to class today.” Thankfully, I would get up, take the shuttle, and head to your class. You should know that not once did I ever miss a lecture.Whether it involved social norms, the mass media, capitalism, culture, family, the topics we learned in class were interesting and very informative. Everyday I would learn
The study of sociology is the study of a society and how people behave in these societies. According to Joel M. Charon in his book Ten Questions, he states that “Sociology is an academic discipline, an attempt to seek knowledge and understanding through painstaking and critical investigation” (Charon 3). In other words, it is an attempt to become knowledgeable about of different societies and people in those societies work together. When studying sociology, a person is trying to understand human society and how humans act and react to certain situations presented to them in their society. It also seeks to understand how much a person will interact with their society.
Certainly having other sociology courses prior to this class helped my learning the most. However, the reading assignments due before each class oriented me throughout the topic and allowed me to understand the lecture. It provided me with a sneak peak of the upcoming topic to be discussed in class. Thus, gave me time to think of comments with which I could participate. It also taught me to watch out for facts and details about a topic.
Sociology is the study of human social relationships and institutions and the study of social problems. Sociology investigates the social causes and consequences of such things as prejudice and discrimination. Auguste Comte first used the term “sociology” in 1838 to refer to the scientific study of society. He argued that society needs scientific knowledge based on facts and evidence to solve its problems. Spencer suggested that society will correct its own defects through the natural process of “survival of the fittest.” Marx claimed that social conflict, especially class conflict, and competition mark all societies. Durkheim stressed the importance of studying social facts or patterns of behavior characteristic of a particular group. He advocated the use of systematic observation to study sociological events, but he also recommended that sociologists avoid considering people's attitudes when explaining society. Weber argued that sociologists must also take into account people's interpretations of events; not just the events themselves. He believed that sociologists must inquire about people's thoughts, feelings, and perceptions regarding their own behaviors. These Sociologists were the main players during the 19th and 20th century, and their prior work led to the development of Sociology in America. Sociologists throughout the decades have sought to develop a scientific approach to the study and resolve such issues as prejudice and discrimination. Early
