1800's Locomotive Headlamp

During the great California Gold Rush and before there was coal oil, kerosene or carbide there was only candlelight. This is a "Sticking Tommy" candlestick. It is iron, made by a blacksmith, and dates to around 1850. These were used during the early days of hard rock mining. The curved hook in the center was used to "stick" the Tommy onto one's hat. Before hard hats, miners wore soft hats. The Tommy could easily be stuck in the hat and then provide arm free lighting while the miner carried his tools and walked to the work site within the mine. Once the miner reached the site, he could then take out the Tommy. If one of the miners needed light in a specific area they could take the Tommy and jab it into a wooden support beam or crevice. Throughout history welding has been known as, and referred to as nay things. It has been relayed to and called such things as, blacksmith or iron workers because of its way of using and manipulating metal. Welding can be dated back to over 2000 years during ancient times like the Bronze Age, but it was first documented as metal shaping in Egypt in 4000 B.C. Some civilizations started with less magnetic materials like copper, then progressed to more iron based materials like bronze, gold, iron and silver. In 3000 B.C. using pressure welding The Sumerians beat and formed swords for battle. Later into the 19th century Sir Humphrey Davy was the inventor of the electric arc, that was powered by battery and using two electrodes. Between 1808 - 1827

In 1879, Thomas Edison invented the first incandescent light bulb in a competitive community. The invention of the electrical light bulb was built on commutative work done by previous scientists and researchers. Edison was invited to William Wallace workshop to examine the Wallace’s prototype. Edison thought that the prototype has something wrong, “I believe that I can beat you making the electrical light. I do not think that you are working in the right direction” Edison told Wallace [1]. Therefore, he decided to do make his own electrical light and there race was started. After a week of his visit to Wallace workshop, Edison was already invented the first light bulb. The success that was achieved by Edison led to a big success for his company,

The light bulb had already been invented before but Thomas Edison improved and perfected the light bulb. The new light bulb that Thomas invented lasted for longer periods of time .Thomas thereafter went on to invent an electrical power system, so that people would have electricity and could use the light bulbs at home.

The lamp symbolizes the hope America is for the immigrants looking for a better life. Representing the opportunities the newcomers can utilize to get the better life they dreamed of if the golden door. In an article titled Top 10 Reasons why America is known as the Land of Oppertunities found on top-10-list.org, it states that America has the most valuable brands. A few examples of these companies are Disney, Apple, Amazon, Ford, and McDonalds. These companies provide jobs for citizens and immigrants alike. People with determination work hard wherever they are will especially utilities the opportunities America has to offer.

After he starts working in the tunnel, he invents a glass box that is similar to light. After he blows the candle “The darkness swallowed us” revealing that the electric box he created was going to help a lot of people (Rand 43). He decides to guard the tunnel as he isn’t officially allowed to invent anything without the permission of House of Scholars. What he was doing was completely against the collective society and more of what an individual would do. At last, Equality 7-2521 cannot abide the destruction of the lightbulb, so he grabs his invention and flees the council.

The artifact I brought is a photograph of my sister and I at the Taquitz Falls, in Palm Springs California. This picture represents a successful hike that brought many tribulations my mom, sister Kailli, and I had to overcome during our adventure into the blazing desert.

Equality 7-2521 had discovered a tunnel that contained remnants of the Unmentionable Times. By performing an experiment consisting of a dissected frog hanging from a copper wire and a metal knife, he later discovered and holstered the power of the sky, or electricity. When Equality 7-2521 closed the current, the wires of the lightbulb glowed without the use of flint or fire, and thus the invention was reborn. The single light consumed the entire room and was far brighter than any candle. The Light bulb changed the lives of many people; it had a big impact on illuminating the night. The night was always dark until the light bulb was invented by Thomas Edison in 1879 and ever since then, the night has been able to be bright if people wanted it too. Hanging in above/front of the Holy Arc is a fixture, called the “Eternal Light” that burns continuously. It represents the light of God. It is derived from God’s spoken word to Moses.

The Cobb Museum had a collection of Old World oil lamps. One lamp was cream colored and teardrop shaped. The top was adorned with a thin u-shaped decoration. Small etched circles added a decorated touch. The top of the lamp had a small looped handle. At the back of the case there was an interesting oil lamp. It was tan colored with hints of red. The handle looked like the back fin of a whale. Next to the spout was a floral design. Two gazelles with long, thin horns graced the sides of the lamp (http://www.cobb.msstate.edu/museum/). The lamp that stood out the most was a black lamp with four spouts from Rome (Cobb). It was the only displayed lamp with multiple spouts. Two of the spouts were missing, but it was obvious where the missing ones would have been. The two remaining spouts had wide openings. The lamp had protruding triangles between each spout to give the lamp a diamond shape. All of the oil lamps in Cobb were varied and unique.

In 1819, times were different .The conveniences we have now and sometimes take for granted, were not available to people back then .One of those things was the invention of the light bulb. There was a need for this invention because, before light bulbs there were oil lamps. Light bulbs helped because the light lasted longer and also because it allowed for people to do many things at night, such as work. Thomas Edison invented the light bulb. Edison tried thousands of different materials for his filaments, but most of them produced light or only a short time. He finally tried a carbonized cotton thread, which burned for many hours. When the first modern light bulb that ran on electricity was created by Thomas Edison who had the invention to be patented in his name on January 27, 1800(Thomas Edison's Patent Application for the Light Bulb (1880) para. 1), people finally had a way to light their homes

Prior to this scene, the majority of the movie has a very dark, shadowy tone to it. The scenes where the magicians are in their 1850’s London homes/workshops or theatres were set with a very woody, dark color palate, as most homes and furniture were wooden in that time period. This is why I believe there is significance in the light bulb field scene. Angier has been made a fool of throughout his career, with Borden sabotaging his shows every chance he can. I believe that the light bulbs in this scene are used to show Angier has made a breakthrough in his quest to become the better magician, and has developed past his days of trapdoors and canaries. Leading up to this scene you won 't see any light as bright as those in the field, which I believe is Nolans way of introducing Nikolas Tesla and his science to the film, and developing the idea that it is a significant moment in Angiers career. His use of the bright man made light and the large number of bulbs there are in the field shows the complexity of Tesla 's work, and that Angier is dealing with serious science and technology.
