There are many factors to take into consideration, when planning and preparing the setting for healthy and safe indoor and outdoor activities. Space should be used wisely. • Light, noise and temperature There should be sufficient light for children to work without discomfort. Harsh lighting for long time should be avoided and day light should be used as much as possible. Noise levels should be considered and if there are any temporary causes for noise (maintenance work or other), children should be relocated to a suitable place, where they can work in quiet environment. The temperature of the rooms should be monitored to make sure it is not too cold or too hot. Fresh air should be provided by opening of windows and doors, making sure that this doesn’t create a safety risk. • Desired outcome for children The place of the activities should be planned in consideration of the desired outcome. Outdoor environment should be considered whenever possible if the type of the activity and the weather allows it. • Duty of care Usage of equipment should be monitored constantly and children should be given instructions of how to use it. Equipment should be stored safely and should be checked and maintained regularly. Any damaged equipment should be removed, repaired or made unreachable if its condition creates a risk of hazard. • Adequate space, according to the number of children and adults The size of the premises and the outdoor space should be planned according to the number of pupils. The booklets must be kept on the school premises. Risks should be assessed periodically, following an accident, on the introduction of any new process/equipment and also any change in circumstances. Educational visits also require a written risk assessment. There is a folder of the most frequently used venues in the staff room, containing risk assessments. There is also a folder containing risk assessments for each group in the same place. All staff and group leaders must ensure that they have read these documents before embarking on a trip and must sign to acknowledge this each time they take children on a trip as part of the signing out procedure.
Furniture: Is all furniture inside the classroom in good repair and suitable for the size of the user. This will ensure that pupils are able to sit comfortable when working , maintain good postures and are not hunched over small tables. Permanent fixtures need to be taken into account, are they in good condition and securely fastened, eg cupboards, display boards, shelving. Hot surfaces such as radiators also need to be protected where necessary, to prevent the risk of burns to pupils.
Once a risk assessment has been carried out, and the hazards have been identified, then a method statement can be developed which takes account of the identified hazards. The method statement should be read and understood by all members of staff and volunteers who are directly involved with supervising the children with that activity.

When planning an indoor lesson you need to take into account various health and safety factors. These will be that the room you will be taking the lesson in has enough space for the amount of students in the lesson. Students and staff should be able to move around the room without causing any problems for others and be able to locate all necessary materials and any equipment that is needed for the lesson. It is important to make the best possible use of space and equipment so the children can enjoy the activities.All children will have equal opportunities to develop movement skills and the environment will be changed to help children practise the mivements skills.When planning physical activity we ensure that no child is excluded from play and activities are modified as necessary.
This would be a good place to visit as some of the children have never been but there are concerns about health and safety and the risk of being in a big open space but to minimise the risk a risk assessment will be done. This will identify the

All settings must carry out risk assessments on a daily basis. These are supplemented with daily checks. In all cases these must be signed and dated, so that members of staff are made responsible and accountable for the safety of children, other staff and visitors to the setting.

2.1 Explain why it is important to have a safe but challenging environment for children and young people?
It is important to take a balanced approach to risk management so not to over protect the children we care for but providing them with the safety to explore and make some decisions about risks confidently themselves with guidance. Children need to learn to manage some risks themselves and recognize their own boundaries and limitations by practitioners helping children and young people recognize the risks and dangers around them in the appropriate way.
These are the following principles to consider when you are planning safe environments or activities with children. Most of them are just plain common sense, just remember though everyone is an individual and may have particular needs.
Facilities – we check the facilities every day for any hazards or dangers such as wet floors/hall way and any hazards that could cause accidents such as tripping over objects or slipping on wet floors. We must make sure all exits are clear and accessible in case of a fire alarm or emergencies. We check the indoor/outdoor environment
