1 Controversial Special Interest Group Ries Guthrie University of Phoenix AJS 583 Dr. Shelia Ward April 15, 2024
2 Controversial Special Interest Group The graph design firm has been asked, by a highly controversial leader of an anti- immigration group, to design images and logos for posters and promotional items that will be used at an anti-immigration rally. The local community very clearly disagrees with these special interest groups. This has resulted in violent counterprotests in the past. If the graphic design firm decides to accept this order there could be security risks and legal ramifications for the firm, a poor perception of the firm throughout the community, and violent protests because of the firm’s creations. On the other hand, accepting the order would be a huge monetary profit for the firm. Opposing Social Interest Groups Opposing social interest groups occur when groups of individuals have opposing viewpoints. In this case the two opposing social interest groups are anti-immigration groups and pro-immigrant advocates. These groups shape the ongoing debate around immigration (Rom et al., 2022). As the marketing manager, understanding these positions is crucial when making the decision to work with the leader of an anti-immigration group. Anti-Immigration Groups Anti-immigration groups have strong beliefs against immigration. These groups believe that immigrants are responsible for social issues, cities falling into disrepair, and environmental degradation. Some anti-immigration groups propagate the conspiracy of the Aztlan theory which states that there is a secret plot by the Mexican government and American Hispanics to reclaim the Southwest United States and establish a Hispanic nation called Azlan (Newport, 2018). Pro-Immigration Advocates
3 Pro-immigration advocates stress compassion, diversity, and the multitude of positive contributes that immigrants make to society. Pro-immigrant advocates call for comprehensive immigration reform, pathways to citizenship, and the protection for refugees. They view immigrants as and essential part of the nation and continuously advocate for fair and humane immigration policies (Bloemraad & Voss, 2019). Security Risks and Legal Ramifications When considering the security risks and legal ramifications that are associated with the acceptance of the order from the anti-immigration group, there are several that the firm should be aware of. Not only will accepting the order lead to the public creating a negative perception of the firm, but it could also violate a slew of laws related to hate crime or encouragement to violence. If the images or logos falsely portray immigrants or specific individuals in a negative way it could be considered defamatory. Defamation laws are put in place to protect individuals from false statements that harm their reputation. If the creations cause physical, emotional, or financial harm to individuals or groups the company could face civil lawsuits seeking compensation. If the firm is legally forced to pay fines and compensation, there would no longer be a monetary profit, in fact this could put an end to the firm. Also, accepting the order could cause the reputation as a socially conscious firm to become tarnished, affecting existing and potential client relationships. Violence during the anti-immigration rally could escalate, posing potential risk to the employees and property (Massey & Pren, 2012). Lastly associating with divisive or harmful messaging contradicts the firm’s values. Upholding ethical standards is essential for long-term success and community trust. The Order
