Family Systems Theory Paper Solution Focused SN Syracuse University SWK730: Family Systems Theory August 18, 2022
Family Systems Theory Paper (Solution Focused) 1 Overview of Solution Focused Therapy Solution focused therapy focuses on the future of the individual; it is goal directed and solution based. Solution focuses therapy was developed by Steve de Shazer and Insoo Kim Berg, they focused on an individual’s strengths by looking at past successful solutions and exceptions to the individual’s current problem (Nelson, 2015). The development of what has been coined as “The miracle question” asks the client if a miracle were to occur overnight while sleeping and the current problem was magically solved; how would the individuals “world” look; how would the individual recognize a miracle had occurred while you slept (Trepper et.al 2006)? Solution focused therapy focuses on the premise that all individuals have strengths, resources, and competences regardless of gender, age, color, class, culture, and abilities (Lee, 2003). Solution focused therapy is culturally competent because the utilization of an individual’s cultural strengths and resources align with the strength base process of change that is fundamental in solution focused therapy (Miller, 2014). In solution focused therapy the therapist and the individual work together to understand the individual’s language and values and does not attempt to change what currently works for the individual (Meyer & Cottone, 2013). The individual must only divulge minimum history or information and because of this approach a broader client base can be attracted (Chaudhry & Li, 2010).
