Executive summary Brad Rodrigues Capella University Math2001 Professor Halverson December 2023
Task and purpose. The purpose of this survey was to help identify causes for the participation in the jail diversion program here in Howard County Texas. The survey was conducted by utilizing random sampling and focused on Howard County residents between the ages of 18 and 65 due to the nature of the program we did not see any bias in regard to race or gender in this program or throughout the survey findings. The total number of those surveyed was eighty-two. This summary will help to shed light on the biggest contributing factors and our area of operations. It is also important to note that this program is run by the local mental health authority for this region. Binary data The first of six questions asked participants to indicate whether they were male or female. It was initially believed that there may have been a slight favoring of males on this question however the data indicated that respondents identified as male and female that just about a 50/50 split. The second question asked on the survey was do you currently have a diagnosed mental health disorder, this again was initially believed to be leaning more towards yes however, the survey data proved that this was again an equally split question with yes being just over the 50% threshold. The third question of the survey asked if the individual respondent was experiencing homelessness. This information was not previously known to the organization however through the efforts of this survey we learned that of the participants homelessness was a factor in approximately forty-nine percent of the cases. The final binary question asked on this survey was whether or not the individual respondent was currently employed. This was initially assumed to be a relatively low value however, the results of this survey showed that approximately forty- seven percent of the respondents indicated that they indeed were employed.
The results of our binary questions were of course important for many reasons chief among them being that the information that is derived from these results will serve to help shape interventions in treatment plans and in dispositions as we come together as a community to alleviate unnecessary arrests and or prolonged stays in county jail due to the large backlog of cases currently sitting before the district attorney's office. Qualitative data Our first quantitative question was asked on a scale of zero to ten with zero indicating non-issue and ten indicating absolute causation was the major cause for the individual respondent's legal issues related to finance. The expected value from the respondents was approximately seven. The actual data concurred with the true result being approximately 7.24 as the average in response was the standard deviation of approximately 2.13. The second and final quantitative question that was asked the respondent indicated on a scale of zero to 10 again with zero being a non-issue and 10 being the most likely causation was the cause for the legal issue directly related to mental health symptoms or crisis. We initially believed the typical response to this question would have provided a value of five however, the data showed slightly higher with the average response being approximately 6.15 with a standard deviation of 1.6 What now? Information gathered from there's survey will help to inform policies and best practices for developing intercepts that can hopefully have long-lasting positive effects on both initial arrest dispositions and recidivism rates inside the Howard County community.
