Why is it important to me as a tertiary learner to use credible sources in my academic research and writing? As an online student, I’m required to submit assignments. It is essential that these assignments are written and submitted based on my personal thoughts and learnings. Learnings gained by reading class notes, research and experience. These thoughts and learnings must be supported by sources that are trusted, relevant, accurate and unbiased to provide greater integrity to my work. It demonstrates to my lecturer that I understand what is required of me, allowing me to effectively meet the course requirements ultimately obtaining my degree. Typically, when researching a topic, it is because I am unfamiliar with the content and I need to determine the credibility of sources. It’s trivial in today’s digital world for anyone to publish a website or blog post. I need to examine the source in depth to establish what qualifications, education and experience they have to support their information. Is the information they are providing accurate, current and unopinionated? Can it be used to support my thoughts in my writing? Determining the credibility of a source can make an enormous difference in my tertiary learning. Using Metzger (2007) I have learnt the importance of using credible sources within my studies. Through using credible sources, I can be confident my thoughts and work will be supported by relevant evidence ensuring my audience views my work positively. The audience can verify my sources and validate the effort undertaken to ensure my work is ethical, accurate and relevant. In conclusion as an online student, in order to submit accurate, ethical and relevant academic research and writing pieces I need to comprehend what is being asked of me providing my opinion on the topic and have it supported by evidence. Evidence that is accurate, current, relevant, unbiased, and has authority so that I can support my opinions allowing me to complete my degree.

Why is it, or will it be, important to me in my career to use credible sources to help shape professional practice? By using credible sources in my professional career, I can demonstrate to my audience that I have conducted extensive research on the topic and that my comments and statements are supported by reliable sources. This will support and validate my work, giving my audience confidence in my professional competence. Given the prevalence and accessibility of online resources an audience can easily verify cited sources, which, if unreliable may detract from my credibility. Using credible sources will be important to me as a teacher to maintain professionalism which assists in establishing a relationship based on trust with my students, their parents/guardians and my fellow colleagues. Using credible sources in my research will allow me to educate my students using a program based on factual and relevant information in a clear and structured way. I will be able to provide evidence to support the basis for my programme. As a teacher, I need to be aware every student is different and that they all learn in different ways. By conducting research using credible sources, I can explore techniques used by experts to help structure my teaching methods to assist student learning. This will provide me the tools to encourage my students to succeed and support continual professional development. Students trust what they are taught is accurate, the use of credible sources gives me confidence to provide and be able to support with evidence any teaching material throughout my professional practice. If I do not use reliable sources as a teacher, I am potentially passing inaccurate information on to students. Using Metzger (2007) as a guide to using credible sources I will have confidence that my professional practices are supported by relevant evidence allowing me to maintain professional integrity.
COM10003: Learning and Communicating Online Assignment 2: Credible Sources, Due: 10 December 2018 3. Choose a topic specifically related to your future career. Compare the relative merits of two sources about the same issue or topic that you have located, one with greater credibility that the other e.g. a journal article versus a social media post. In your comparison you are to briefly explain: Why one source is more credible that the other; How this source would help you in your professional and career practice more than the less credible source. The topic I chose to look at is Phonemes. The first source I have researched on Phonemes is titled ‘Phonology: The Sound Patterns of Language’ (Szczegielniak, 2013) . The second source is ‘What is phonology?’ (Unknown, 2013) . I used Metzger’s five key criteria as a tool to compare the credibility of these sources. Comparing both sources for accuracy, neither source stands out from the other. The content does not contradict each other and is consistent with other sources of information on the topic. The authority of source one is clear, the author is named and his credentials are easily validated via his bio page. Adam Szczegielniak has received university training in linguistics and has taught classes in linguistics. The second source has no known author making it difficult to determine its authority lowering its credibility. When it comes to objectivity both sources provide factual unbiased information. It may be possible to attribute some commercial intent to the first source as potential employers may review content produced by the author. However, in this case any commercial intent would be unlikely to detract from the source’s credibility. Commercial intent for the second source is unlikely given its unknown author and content that appears to be created independently of the website.
