, you will reflect on and plan to engage families in their childrens’ emergent reading and writing development.
Choose one of the following strategies to implement with the families in your early care and education
environment.

Use the planning form to guide you in developing and implementing the strategy.
Strategy Options
Invite families to share about their literacy experiences.
Provide a variety of reading materials that relate to what is important to the families.
Use families’ home languages in the learning environment.
Include all family members and encourage multiple ways in which they can contribute (e.g., verbal storytelling, reading, sharing a piece of writing or a piece of art, etc.).
Incorporate materials that honor children with special needs.
Offer multiple ways to connect or communicate with the families.
Recognize that literacy is a way to empower the family through stimulating thoughts and social interaction.
Encourage shared family reading experiences.

Language Identification:
Conduct surveys and hold one-on-one meetings to identify exactly what
language families use at home.
Database Creation:
Establish a comprehensive language database in our preschool community based on data collected from surveys and meetings.
Multilingual Environment:
I am committed to implementing multilingual signage, including signs, labels and billboards that reflect the diverse languages of our community.

Daily Routines Integration:
I will seamlessly integrate various languages into our daily routines, incorporating greetings, weather discussions, and calendar time.
Multilingual Resource Library:
I will work collaboratively with families to build a library of children's books in various languages, ensuring representation and diversity.
Family Contributions:
I will actively encourage families to contribute and donate books in their native languages, recognizing and appreciating their valuable contributions.
Language Celebration Events:
Monthly cultural celebrations will be organized, and I will invite families to share their traditions in their native languages during these events.
This personalized plan represents a commitment to creating an inclusive learning environment where we respect and celebrate the linguistic diversity of our families while actively engaging them in their children's emergent literacy development.
Step 2: Plan for implementation of the strategy. “Family Literacy Enhancement Program”
Language Assessment:
Conduct a survey to identify the home languages spoken by families.
Create a comprehensive database of the languages represented within the preschool community.
Multilingual Environment:
Develop multilingual signs for common areas, classroom, and outdoor spaces.
Involve children in creating bilingual labels for objects within the classroom.
Introduce signage in multiple languages throughout the preschool, including labels, posters, and bulletin boards.
