Language and Society in AMESA Prof. Borjian Worksheet # 10 Reading: Bernard Spolsky (2006). Language Policy. Ch. 2: Driving Out the bad What follows below are various forms of Language Purifications (driving out the bad or the unwanted elements from language. Languages are managed differently in different societies. Stamping out Sexist Language Managing Racist Language Controlling Personal Names Driving out the bad or Language Purification is a form of Language Management Dealing with Blasphemy Language Purism Language Standardization
Using the space below, choose 4 (of the 6) forms of language purifications. Define each concept and provide one or two examples for each based on what the author said in the reading. You can also bring examples from your own life or the world that surround you. 1. Stamping out Sexist Language This refers to the removal of gender-discriminatory expressions in language. The author mentioned a movement for gender equality that began in the United States in the 1960s, which recommended using "person" instead of "man" and "he or she" instead of "he". I remember some people didn’t want to call history as history because it contains “his” Radical feminists often refer to history as 'herstory' as a way to challenge the perceived male- centered narrative of history. The term 'herstory' is a linguistic reformation that emphasizes women's contributions and experiences, which have often been overlooked or marginalized in traditional historical narratives. This term is a part of the broader feminist effort to re-evaluate and re-write history to include women's perspectives, achievements, and struggles. (2024) (I didn’t want to mention about feminism for the school assignment because it’s a sensitive keyword these days, however I thought it can be good example since the topic is related to sex) 2. Managing Racist Language The author gave an example of the term 'Negro' being replaced with 'Black' or 'Afro-American'. This refers to the elimination of racially discriminatory terms and expressions in language. In Korea, we used to call Apricot color as Skin color because Apricot color is similar as skin color of Korean. However, I don’t know since when, but Korea started to change to call it Apricot color. 3. Controlling Personal Names Controlling personal names is a form of language management where certain societies or governments place restrictions on an individual's choice of name. The author mentioned a case in Bulgaria where people of Turkish descent were compelled to avoid Turkish names and adopt Bulgarian ones. 4. Language Purism Language purism is an attempt to preserve a language in its "pure" form by excluding foreign words or modified forms. The author describes a significant example of language purism in Turkey during the early 20th century. Under the leadership of Kemal Atatürk, there was a language reform movement to remove Arabic and Persian words from Turkish.
