HIS 100 Module One Activity Template: Project Topic Exploration You must pick a topic from the Research Topics Lists in the Library Research Guide. While it is a good idea to choose your topic early, you may change it until the next module. Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Support your responses with specific details and examples. Identify the topic you chose to explore: I choose the Tulsa race Massacre Explain what you already know about the chosen topic based on your personal history or experiences. I know that the Tulsa race massacre also known as the Wall Street massacre was a two-day long Massacre they took place May 31 to June 1 of 1921. It began during the Memorial Day weekend after a 19 year old Dick Rowland a black shoe shiner was accused of assaulting a white 17 year old elevator operator by the name of Sarah Page. Describe the beliefs, assumptions, and values you have related to the topic you chose. The Tulsa Massacre was an extreme example of how racial discrimination can have a big fatal outcome. It shows the cruel and wicked behaviors of white people on African American citizens back then and how it still continues to this very day. The history of the Tulsa Massacre teaches us how rigid beliefs, and hate can turn people into immoral human beings and how it is important to be compassionate, kind and respectful to all human beings regardless of their race. Explain why this topic is relevant to current events or to modern society. Discrimination is still a big problem in today’s society. And it’s displayed in many ways and nothing is being done. Police brutality has been a recurring issue and it’s due to racism and discrimination on African Americans and other minorities. I feel by examining the events that led to the Massacre as well as the racism and prejudice that fueled the violence, we can better understand the systemic issues that continue to impact our Black communities today. 1
