Module 7 Short Responses – Question 1 Name three historical lenses that you could apply to gain a fuller picture of the relationship between Natives and white settlers. Be sure to respond to this question in no more than one sentence, using proper grammar. To gain a more comprehensive understanding of the relationship between Native Americans and white settlers, I would utilize three historical lenses: cultural, religious, and social. A cultural analysis would provide insight into the aspects of Native American culture that were adopted by white settlers, such as farming techniques and sports like lacrosse. A religious lens would allow me to examine the tension between Christianity and Native American beliefs, and the pressure on Native Americans to convert to the white settlers' religion. Lastly, a social lens would enable me to explore the concept of "Manifest Destiny" - a theory in 19th century USA that asserted white, Christian citizens were chosen by God and entitled to expand their territory. This ideology resulted in the marginalization of Native Americans and the emergence of racial conflicts. Module 7 Short Responses – Question 2 Revise the thesis statement at the top of this page to reflect a more complex view of the relationship between Natives and white settlers. Your revised thesis statement should be longer than one sentence. It is imperative to acknowledge that the conflicts between Natives and white settlers during the early 19th century were primarily caused by land disputes, which were fueled by the growing and developing Commonwealth of the State of Georgia in 1820. The farmers and Georgia's increasing reliance on cotton as a cash crop necessitated the acquisition of more land, thereby threatening the Native Indians' religion and future generations. The Natives recognized this as a significant threat and were prepared to fight and lay down their lives to protect their way of life. Module 7 Short Responses – Question 3 Name three historical lenses that you could use to look at the events described in the video you just saw. The video discussed three historical lenses to examine the events surrounding Thanksgiving: religious, military, and cultural. To understand the Puritan influence on the holiday, I would use the religious lens. The military lens would focus on the treaty between Pilgrims and Wampanoag, its making, and the resulting conflicts. The cultural lens would explore the different meanings of Thanksgiving, including its origins as a festival for Native Americans and a celebration marking the end of a war with the Indians. Module 7 Short Responses – Question 4
Massasoit's decision to approach the Pilgrims about an alliance was contingent on what previous event or events? (Name one or two.) Tisquantum played a vital role in bringing about a peaceful encounter between the Pilgrims and Massasoit. Captured and taken to England, he learned English and discovered the tragic news of his tribe's demise due to diseases. Upon his return to America, he lived with Massasoit and Quadequina, the leaders of the Wampanoag Confederation. Massasoit recognized Tisquantum's unique abilities to translate and bridge the gap between the two groups, which ultimately led to the development of common goals. Module 7 Short Responses – Question 5 Name one short-term consequence and one long-term consequence of the alliance between the Wampanoag and the Pilgrims. A short-term consequence is they banded together against a familiar foe. A long-term consequence is that if a Wampanoag broke the peace, he would be sent to Plymouth for punishment; if a colonist broke the law, he would be forwarded to the Wampanoag. This helped keep the Wampanoag neutral in the Pequot War of the late 1630s, in which hundreds of natives were killed, and hundreds more were taken captive and sold into slavery. Module 7 Short Responses – Question 7 Name four historical lenses through which you could analyze the events of the Cherokee Removal. Specify one aspect of this event for each lens that you cite. . There are four different lenses through which I could analyze the events surrounding the Cherokee Removal. The military lens would allow me to examine the strategic planning required for the removal process itself. The political lens would give me insight into how the Treaty of New Echota provided the legal justification for the Trail of Tears. From an economic perspective, I would consider the financial costs of the removal for the government, as well as the income generated by the removal of the Cherokee. Lastly, I would explore the social dynamics between white settlers and the Cherokee, including interracial marriage and the cultural beliefs surrounding mixed-race children. . Module 7 Short Responses – Question 8 Agree or disagree with the following thesis statement: "The Treaty of New Echota was invalid, and the National Party was correct to oppose it." Cite at least three historical facts that support your position.
