Leadership Self-Assessment 2
Listening Skills in Leadership
This self-assessment exercise was useful, it made me realize that I am not such a good listener as I thought. I expected to have a higher score and I got 55. With the questions
asked I found some areas that I am strong at but some others that I need to improve, like not
judging and tuning out when someone with whom I disagree is talking. Additionally, I occasionally interrupt others and I do not let them finish what they are saying. However, the
self-assessment also pointed out that I am good at showing interest and organizing information when I do actively listen. Improving my listening skills as a leader is crucial for building trust and commitment among my staff.
From the questions and results, I would say that the assessment accurately points out areas where I need to improve my listening skills as a leader but at the same time highlighted areas where I already excel. By showing me my strengths and weaknesses, this assessment has provided me with valuable insights into my listening skills as a leader and given me an idea on how to further develop and enhance my active listening abilities.
Bon the results, I need to improve some areas in the listening, for instance being more tolerant and open-minded to listen to others’ ideas and perspectives, as well as avoiding interruptions and allowing others to fully express themselves. By actively working
on improving these areas, I can become a more effective listener and leader, fostering better
communication, understanding, and support within my team.

As of followership, there are some strengths and weaknesses that comes with it. Some of the strengths is having the opportunity to follow someone who is willing to guide and show you the in and outs of how things are ran and how to achieve whatever goals you may have. The good thing about followership is is being able to be educated by someone who has done what you are trying to do, if not more. Followership could also help leaders become better at being leaders.

“Leaning in” as a leader means two things. One is to understand the needs of the followers and provide them with tools, environments, and opportunities that allow the team to be most effective. The second is to trust their team’s ability to conquer any challenges to reach the end goal. If the leader fails to lean in with the team, the whole organization would likely fail. Since the leader needs their followers to achieve any goals at all. The same applies for the follower as well. As a follower, the more you are able to lean in towards the leader. Let them know how you operate and what environment you work best in, it would be impossible for the leaders to create such an environment.
To effectively build connections with others, respect, would be the first step. Whether it’s leaders or followers. All of us lead not just those with the formal title. All of us follow, not just the front-line staff. In effective collaborations, one moment we are leading and then we switch to following; in other words, leadership and followership are dynamic, context-specific, and ever-evolving.
This empowering perspective opens up leadership to everyone, normalizes followership, and enables more productive and innovative collaborations. Candid conversations about both roles and functions allow for more effective coaching, mentoring, skill development, and interpersonal agility that results in more effective teams.
Our thinking about leadership must evolve to include formal leadership coexisting with informal leadership, and a shared dynamic model of leadership.
