Fish Lab In this lab, you will perform a Modified Stationary Point Count survey of sharks in the kelp forest vs. the open sea exhibits in the Monterey Bay Aquarium. Please follow the instructions below. 1. Fill out the species data sheet on p.2 based on the lab explanation video (2 points). 2. Launch the kelp forest webcam here (links to an external site). 3. Watch until you see 0 sharks on screen. 4. As soon as a shark appears on screen, start screen-capturing still images of the video feed to your computer. (If you can't do screen shots on your computer for some reason, you can take photos with your phone.) 5. Capture 1 screen grab every 10 seconds for 200 seconds (you will end up with 20 still images). Please save these images; the instructor may ask to see them later. 6. Record on your data sheet (p.3) how many of each species of shark you see in each screen grab. (5 points) 7. Add up all of the Species 1 sharks you saw in the 20 images. Enter the number in the "Total Individuals Counted" row, in the Species 1 column. Repeat for Species 2, 3, and 4. (1 point) 8. Divide the numbers in the "Total Individuals Counted" row by 20, to get the average number of individuals per image for each shark species. (1 point) 9. Now, calculate the biomass per individual of each species using the formula Weight = aL b and using the a, b, and L values from p.2 (which you filled out in Step 1). (2 points) 10. Calculate the average biomass per image by multiplying the "average individuals per image" number by the "biomass per individual" for each species. (1 point) 11. Repeat Steps 3-10 for the Open Sea, here (links to an external site). (10 points) 12. Based on your results, please answer the questions on p.5. (8 points) 1
