Mr. Lewellen ANTH 1200, EM6 [6745] 10/18/2022 Lab 2: "Safe Haven For Chimps" 1. Near the beginning of the video the veterinarian, Dr. Jackson, explains that she is involved in an historic event relating to chimpanzees? What is she talking about? Dr. Jackson states that she is part of history and that looking back, she will feel accomplished and satisfied being that she was part of making a difference in the chimpanzees lives. Dr. Jackson also knows how to “break the ice” with the chimps and knows their language, she communicates with them and it helps them feel safe with her. 2. Before a new arrival of chimps were introduced to their new family at Chimp Haven, what preparations were taken to make them feel comfortable? Before the arrival of chimps at Chimp Haven, preparations included: allowing chimpanzees to explore and settle in while quarantining for two weeks as they are very social animals, and will interact and live in large groups with the other chimpanzees as well. 3. What foods do the caretakers provide the chimps with on a daily basis? Chimpanzees eat a lot of greens, a lot of veggies, and occasionally, apples and bananas as well. 4. When the chimps are released into a confined forest setting to experience life "in the wild" for short durations, what are some of their activities that are observed by the researchers? Chimpanzees do what comes naturally. They eat termites, ants, and bugs, and also create tools to get food. Some chimps also like to swing on the branches, climb, groom each other, or hash out differences. 5. An artificial termite mound filled with Applesauce is available for the chimps in the video. What is it about the way the chimps interact with this termite mound that confirms one of the main discoveries of Jane Goodall? The chimps interaction with the termite mound showcases the ability of chimpanzees to use a tool modified by them to feed themselves, relating that chimpanzees are more similar to humans than once perceived. 6. What are the reasons why the chimps at Chimp Haven cannot be reintroduced into the wild and left to care for themselves? Chimps cannot be reintroduced into the wild as most African sanctuaries are full, and they would not know how to survive in the wildlife, as they could also introduce diseases to the wildlife as
about half of chimpanzees in the sanctuary were “deliberately infected with HIV and hepatitis in the lab.” 7. Many of the chimps at Chimp Haven were used as experimental subjects for HIV/AIDS research. How were these HIV-infected chimps treated at Chimp Haven? What was done for them? Due to these chimps being deliberately infected with HIV/AIDS, they remain separated from the rest of the population at Chimp Haven. Dr. Jackson’s essential goal is to keep these chimps happy and healthy, as their blood samples were also supplemented to know their quality of life. They were also moved into a outdoor setting where they can roam freely, as they try to keep the chimps occupied, so they can adjust to later being moved into the confined forest. 8. What is the purpose of bringing in a live musician to play music for the chimps? The purpose of bringing a live musician to play music for the chimps is that music is known for calming nerves, helping rehabilitate, and helping create mentally healthy chimps while engaging the mind of chimpanzees. Plus, some of the chimps really seem to enjoy the music. 9. In spite of Lori Gruen's efforts to retire chimps from being research subjects, the video states that some of the chimps may not live long enough to retire. Why is this so? Despite Lori Gruen’s efforts, some aging chimps may not live long enough to retire due to the awful conditions endured at the research centers, such as being infected with HIV/AIDS and hepatitis. 10. What would be a way to fast track the liberation of the chimps? As a way to fast track the liberation of the chimpanzees, we should put an end to medical experiments on chimps, and continue to open sanctuaries like “Chimp Haven”. Also, advocating for this issue is important as well to spread awareness to the public.
